best window vacuums

Mopping up condensation on your windows certainly isn’t a job we’d describe as fun – but with the best window vacuums, it almost is. The snazzy gadgets satisfyingly soak up any water that’s accumulated and banish droplet marks, keeping your windows and surfaces dry and pristine.

They're multitaskers too. You can use these mini vacuums for practically any job where you have leftover surface water to deal with – like clearing a steamy bathroom mirror rather than smearing the water about, so you can get ready more speedily in the morning.

how we test window vacuums

How we test window vacuums

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test window vacuums on a wide range of grubby surfaces: windows, car windows, shower screens, mirrors and tiled splashbacks. If the model can be used horizontally, we also test it on a countertop and measure how effectively it picks up standing water from a shallow tray.

For each surface test, we prepare a specific solution – for instance, we use mud for windows, soap for shower screens, and tomato sauce/oil for splashbacks. After applying the stains, we leave them to settle before wiping the surface once with cleaning spray.

We then use the window vacuum to remove the remaining dirty water, recording how many sweeps it takes and checking for streaks, water marks, residue or liquid pushed across the surface. We also assess how smoothly the vacuum glides, how easy it is to control and whether it leaks.

Finally, we assess ease of use, design and clarity and usefulness of instructions, including how comfortable the vacuum is to hold and how straightforward it is to empty the tank.

Score: 95/100

If removing window condensation is your main goal, Karcher’s latest window vac is the best tool for the job, removing all water in a single sweep. It glides smoothly across glass and works effectively when held horizontally, so you can use it to vacuum up excess moisture on your windowsills too.

The wide, flexible blade helped collect water around the edges of tiles and there were only a few streaks left behind after wiping down our shower screen. And, perhaps more importantly, we managed to do all our testing on a single battery charge.

A smaller attachment for getting into corners and tighter areas would have been a good add-on, but the ones we did have helped us get the job done.

Score: 94/100

Karcher is one of the best known brands for window vacuums, and this one aced our tests. Windows and tiles were left streak-free and dry within a couple of sweeps. It was particularly effective in our test bathroom, lifting condensation from mirrors in just one pass.

It didn’t leak when we held it horizontally and glided smoothly across our surfaces. Testers liked the microfibre cloth and edge cleaning tool that come with it and found the controls responsive. The wiper itself was a bit fiddly to clean, but if there’s a blockage it’s easy to take apart and clear. Our top pick for dry, watermark-free surfaces at home.

Cons

  • On the pricier side

Score: 91/100

If you have a lot of windows in your home, this Bosch is for you. While it claims to have a 30-minute run-time, on test, it lasted for 40, which means you should easily have time to collect the condensation from every single window, should you need to.

As its score suggests, it performed reliably, lifting water within up to three sweeps in all our tests. It didn’t squeak at all, moving smoothly over surfaces and leaving very few smears in its wake. The water tank is also easy to peer into, but the spray head was a bit loose, and its trigger leaked a little. It should gobble that straight back up though.

Score: 89/100

This isn’t the cheapest window vacuum we tested, but it’s more affordable than our two high scorers, and it nearly rivalled them performance-wise too, leaving our tiles, mirrors and windows dry and water mark-free. While it wouldn’t replace traditional cleaning, there weren’t too many smears either.

It has an easy-to-use water tank and comes with a cleaning bottle that mists evenly. There’s only one squeegee head though, which makes it trickier to tackle smaller or awkwardly shaped surfaces. For its price, it’s a condensation banishing box-ticker.

An extendable pole takes this window vacuum up a notch. While it’s not long enough to reach windows on floors above, for example, the extra 65cm offers more flexibility and makes it easier to reach the top sections of windows or over the top of the kitchen sink. No more tiptoeing required.

Just two sweeps were needed to fully remove water from our windows, and we saw similar results when cleaning a shower screen, mirror and bathroom tiles thanks to the substantial 28cm vacuum head.

The large head did mean it was tricky to clean tight corners but the rest of our surfaces were left clean and streak-free.

Pros

  • Light and comfortable to use
  • Excellent performance and can be used horizontally

Cons

  • Tank is a little small and is awkward to refit

Score: 87/100

Weighing just 500 grams, this window vac is the lightest one we’ve ever tested, while being just 3cm narrower than most other models. The compact design is comfortable and balanced to use, with a squeegee head that clicks securely into place.

It put in an excellent performance in our tests, smoothly cleaning up dirty mirrors, shower screens and curved car windows and leaving them streak-free in just one pass. It did well on grubby countertops and tiled splashbacks, too, removing residue from grease and tomato sauce and needing just one or two more passes to mop up any remaining mess.

Our testers didn’t love the tank design, however, finding it quite stiff and awkward to remove and refit. It also needs frequent emptying (especially when dealing with a lot of moisture), and the narrow, angled pouring slot is quite slow to empty. But overall, this is a very competent and well-priced Kärcher that won't take up too much space.

Pros

  • Has a larger tank that most
  • Left minimal water marks behind
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Limited attachments
  • Left behind some dirt marks

Score: 85/100

This affordable model will set you back under £30 and gives you 29 minutes of water vacuuming power from each charge. Testers liked its large tank and comfortable handle, but it doesn’t come with the same array of accessories as the others we tested (and the squeegee is fiddly to remove and refit), so it’s not as well suited to cleaning smaller areas.

It removed water easily from all our surfaces, taking up to four passes to leave our windows and mirrors dry to the touch. We wouldn’t use it for cleaning, though, as it wasn’t great at picking up residual dirt, which means there was some smearing on glass. But it didn’t leave any water marks or leak. It’s a reliable, budget-friendly way to help deal with any condensation problems.

Pros

  • Good at removing condensation and dirty water
  • Left mirrors clean and shiny without any buffing needed
  • Affordable

Cons

  • The cloth attachment didn’t fit onto the spray bottle securely, sometimes sliding off
  • Can be used horizontally but this wasn’t as effective

Score: 84/100

This well-designed window vacuum is lightweight and comfortable to hold (thanks to the curved handle), and our testers found it effective across a range of tasks.

It performed best when cleaning mirrors, gliding smoothly across the surface and removing water in one sweep. On other surfaces, such as windows and the shower screen, the squeegee seemed to push water down rather than vacuum it up initially.

However, a second sweep did the trick. It also removed loosened dirt from the car window, without making a mess or leaving water marks behind.

You’ll have half an hour’s worth of battery time to whizz round and dry your surfaces with this nifty gadget. Testers found it lightweight to use and were impressed with how it removed water from glass – its large squeegee head meant it covered a good area in one sweep.

That’s the only attachment it comes with though, and it tended to smear specs of dirt rather than lifting them. Our experts didn’t spot any leaking, however, and there weren’t any water marks after use. A good one to keep on hand for your bathroom or windows.

Why you should trust the Good Housekeeping Institute

We love cleaning gadgets here at the Good Housekeeping Institute, so you can rest assured that we’ll test any new ones we come across thoroughly to see if they're a must-have or a gimmick.

We definitely recommend window vacuums if you have a condensation problem on your hands, and to make sure they're up to the job, our homes testing manager, Blossom Boothroyd, tried out every product on this list across a range of rigorous tests.

Our senior homes and lifestyle writer, Megan Geall, then took Blossom's results and translated them into easy-to-read reviews. She’s written about hundreds of products and looks out for those details that separate the best buys from the rest.

How to choose a window vacuum

Window vacuums are essentially electric squeegees that collect water as they pass over surfaces. They’re ideal for removing condensation on windows and shower screens and sucking up excess water if you’re cleaning tiles, kitchen surfaces and car windows – especially as they help prevent any annoying water marks.

Before buying, consider these key factors:

Battery life: You don’t want to get stuck halfway through a job, so it’s always wise to look at how long the battery will last on a window vacuum. Most last around half an hour, which should give you plenty of time to work through key tasks.

Weight: A heavy window vacuum will make your wrists hurt when you’re using it for long periods. If you’re concerned about this, opt for one of the lighter models that weigh around 700 grams like the Karcher WV 5 Plus.

Accessories: Most window vacuums come with a microfibre cloth or pad, as well as a spray bottle, but it does vary from one model to another. Consider which tasks are most important to you and check the design you choose has all the attachments you’ll need.

Is a window vacuum worth it?

If you have lots of glass surfaces or battle daily condensation, a window vacuum is a worthwhile investment. They remove water quickly and leave a streak-free finish with minimal effort, saving time compared to wiping by hand.

As well as windows, they’re brilliant for removing moisture from mirrors, tiles and shower screens. However, they don’t replace a full clean – you’ll still need to wash dirt loose before sucking up the water. If you only have a few windows, a squeegee and cloth may do the job, but for busy households or those fighting moisture build-up, a window vac is a savvy buy.

Do window vacuum cleaners work for condensation?

Window vacuums are excellent for clearing surface moisture from windows, mirrors and tiles, leaving them dry in seconds. They’re particularly useful on cold mornings when condensation forms indoors, helping to reduce mould risk.

Remember, they only remove existing water – they don’t prevent condensation from forming. To tackle the cause, you’ll still need to improve ventilation or reduce humidity (combine with one of the best dehumidifiers, and that's excess condensation sorted). Used alongside good airflow, a window vac is an easy, effective way to manage daily dampness and keep surfaces spotless.

Do window vacuum cleaners leave streaks?

Used properly, most window vacs leave a streak-free finish. They suck away dirty water efficiently, preventing drips or smears, especially when you work top-to-bottom. However, streaks can appear if the blade is dirty, the glass is greasy or you move too slowly.

For best results, pre-wash the surface to remove grime, keep the rubber blade clean and avoid working in direct sunlight. The models in this roundup are all excellent performers that will leave windows sparkling clear with minimal effort.

Are Karcher window vacs worth it?

Karcher is the top-performing brand in our window vacuum tests, so if you’re after the very best, it’s worth investing in our winner. We were impressed with its performance, quality, and general ease of use, so while it’s more expensive than others in our list, we think it’s worth splashing the cash if you can.

If you’re replacing an existing window vacuum, there are plenty of places for you to safely recycle your old one. Find your nearest electrical recycling point, or read our guide on how to donate or dispose of your appliances and tech for extra guidance.

The verdict: What is the best window vacuum to buy?

Our winner, the Kärcher WV 6 Plus Window Vacuum, left windows dry and streak-free, and lifted condensation with ease. Importantly, it didn’t leak either. Opt for the Karcher WV 5 Plus if you don't want to splash out on the most premium model as it scored just one mark less than Karcher's latest release. It's also the better choice if you specifically want a window vacuum for drying tiles.

For more of a budget buy, we suggest trying the Tower TWV10 Cordless Window Vacuum Cleaner (for less than £30).
