The best electric blankets are great, cost-effective heating solutions that will keep you feeling cosy for less.

These soft, versatile blankets will make your bed feel snug on even the coldest nights and keep you warm while you're sat on the sofa watching boxsets or working from home. They’ll also save you from turning the heating on or up during the day when you just want to warm yourself.

Our experts have been hard at work testing lots of new heated throws and under blankets so you can shop the best picks for winter this year.

How we test electric blankets

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, our experts make up a double bed to test each electric blanket on, measuring how evenly the temperature is distributed by using devices called LogTags. We place nine of these in rows of three along the top, middle and bottom of the blanket, before running it on a low, medium and high setting and taking a recording from each. We then calculate the average difference to work out how even the distribution of heat is.

Our next test looks at temperature fluctuation. We pop the blanket on its highest setting and place three LogTags at the top, middle and bottom of the blanket. We then leave the blanket to run for three hours before calculating the difference between the highest and lowest recording. A smaller fluctuation indicates a more consistent electric blanket.

We also measure energy consumption by running the blanket for eight hours on its highest setting and taking a reading at the end of the period.

For designs with dual controls, we look at how accurate the settings are on each side and if there is any temperature crossover when the settings are different. We also try out features like extra foot warmth to test their effectiveness.

Finally, we put any washing claims to the test to check for shrinkage or deterioration, and score the design, ease of use and instructions according to a specially designed survey.

Lakeland StaySnug Faux Fur Heated Throw

Pros

  • Soft, with a pleasing weight
  • Maintained a stable and evenly distributed temperature
  • Nine temperature settings offer plenty of flexibility

Cons

  • Hard to fit into the washing machine due to its size

Score: 97/100

With its cosy, soft faux-fur finish, this is a winning living room addition. On test, this blanket was a real show-off, and not just because it will make a statement on your sofa – it scored full marks for even distribution of warmth and maintaining a stable temperature.

It has nine temperature settings, nine timers, and simple controls. It aced our wash tests too, emerging just as luxurious as before, so you don’t need to worry about any matting. Note that it is big, so may not fit in smaller drums and it takes a while to dry.

It’s also one of the priciest electric throw blankets on our list, but it works quickly so you should start warming up within ten minutes.

Pros

  • Has a 12-hour timer and an auto shut-off feature
  • Feels and looks well made

Cons

  • No detailed preheat instructions

Score: 94/100

This electric throw is made of Sherpa and soft faux fur delivers reliable and consistent warmth with ease. Pre-heating took just nine minutes, and the intuitive controls make it easy to cycle through the nine heat settings.

It impressed our expert with its temperature distribution – the largest variation was just 2.6 degrees, which wasn’t even noticeable during use. The temperature didn’t fluctuate either, staying within 0.7 degrees of the setting we selected.

Washing is a breeze thanks to clear instructions on both the blanket’s label and the manual, but note, it is air dry only and takes a while due to its size and thickness.

Pros

  • Thoughtful design should fit even deep mattresses
  • Performed reliably throughout testing

Cons

  • Controls aren't the clearest in the dark

Score: 92/100

There’s no doubt about it, this under blanket is an outstanding winter warmer. On test, it distributed heat evenly across its soft, fleecy surface on all temperature settings, even after extended use.

It only took five minutes to heat up and fitted our double mattress with minimal effort. It barely shrunk after washing either.

It also has built-in foot warmth, but you can’t adjust its settings and the control isn’t the easiest to read at night. Overall, though, this high-quality blanket costs little to run and would make a comfortable addition to any bed.

Beurer Cosy HD75 Heating Blanket

Pros

  • Excellent, consistent temperature distribution
  • A good size for draping over you on the sofa

Cons

  • Slight dip in quality after washing, but nothing too noticeable

Score: 89/100

Swap your usual blanket for this heated throw and enjoy extra warmth for up to three hours at a time. Ideal for sitting on the sofa with, it drapes comfortably across the body and feels velvety-soft to touch. Plus, it was one of the best on test for even temperature distribution, while the controls are intuitive and it’s easy to wash.

It’s not as cost effective as an under blanket – on test, the throw cost 3.2p for three hours while our winning blanket costs a similar amount for eight hours – but it was the most energy efficient throw we tried. So, if you’re after a blanket for daytime use, this is a worthwhile buy.

Pros

  • Easy to use with six temperature settings and dual controls
  • Heats up quickly (in about five minutes)

Cons

  • Wires not entirely disguised to touch
  • Inconsistent low setting

Score: 89/100

This soft cotton under blanket slips easily onto your mattress and will bring you warmth all night long. In the lab, it heated up in just five minutes, so you don’t need to worry about getting into a chilly bed. It has two controls, three timers, and six settings, bringing flexibility too.

The heat was well distributed, especially on the higher settings, and it was fairly stable too. The wires were a little noticeable when lying on them, so it may not be for light sleepers, but the topper emerged from the washing machine in pristine condition. It’s a great bedroom addition.

Pros

  • Extra foot warmth setting impressed our tester
  • One of the most comfortable toppers we tried with ample cushioning

Cons

  • Outer cover absorbs some of the heat (but makes it machine washable)
  • Dual controls are useful but one side reached higher temperatures than the other

Score: 88/100

With double the controls comes double the energy usage, but this electric blanket still only costs 3.4p to run per night.

Nine settings (including foot warmth) and easy-access controls mean both you and your partner should drift off happily, while the padded design also adds some extra cushioning to your bed (similar to a traditional mattress topper).

It proved reliable too, taking a respectable 15 minutes to heat up with minimal temperature fluctuations, although we found the right side wasn’t as effective as the left.

Pros

  • The controls can clear and simple to use
  • Can be tumble dried

Cons

  • The lining tended to ruck up slightly after tumble drying and needed repositioning
  • Some shedding from the faux fur

Score: 86/100

This luxuriously fluffy blanket is sure to make a statement in your home. It’s also both stylish and practical thanks to its six heat settings, which turn it into a cosy cocoon that you won’t want to come out from.

While the faux fur is great for warmth, it did shed (particularly when new) so we recommend investing in a lint roller to pick up the worst of the loose strands.

Around 10 minutes is needed for pre-heating and we found the temperature was evenly distributed across the blanket. There were some minor dips in warmth over a three-hour period (an average difference of 2.5 degrees); however, it’s unlikely you’d notice that change in real life.

The electric throw washed well but took several hours to dry on a delicate cycle in the tumble dryer, so make sure you set aside enough time when you’re giving it a freshen up.

Silentnight Teddy Comfort Control Electric Blanket

Pros

  • Fluffy fabric disguises feel of cables well
  • Good fit on our test mattress

Cons

  • Material matted slightly after washing
  • Limited controls with just three heat settings and no timer

WAS £52.99, NOW £42.74

Score: 85/100

This is a simpler electric blanket design than some, with three temperature settings, but it’s still just as cosy thanks to its soft, fluffy material. It stayed securely on our mattress and distributed heat well, especially on its lowest setting. It was a little less even on the higher settings (and it took over an hour for the temperature to stabilise), but nothing that would be noticeable at night.

It washed well too, although it’s a bit fiddly removing the controls and the fluffy topper flattened a little afterwards. But these are small niggles, especially as it will likely sit underneath a bedsheet. It should still bring plenty of warmth to your bed – and for a much lower price than many, making it our best value under blanket.

Yours and Mine Dual Control Electric Blanket

Silentnight Yours and Mine Dual Control Electric Blanket

Pros

  • Good for couples with different preferences
  • Great value for the performance and versatility

Cons

  • No foot warmth settings
  • Took about 30 minutes to reach its highest temperature

Score: 85/100

This great value under blanket was a top scorer on our dual control tests; it kept a steady temperature all night on both sides, even when we varied the temperatures. Plus, the controls are easily accessible.

Patience is required, though, as it takes 30 minutes to get to temperature and with only three settings and no foot warmth, it’s not the most advanced buy.

As is the case with all dual control options, it’s more expensive to run, so you may not want to keep it on all night. But given its affordable price, we were impressed with its performance (it also washed well) and comfortable design.

Pros

  • Heats up quickly
  • Well-constructed design

Cons

  • Fiddly to remove controls and fit into a washing machine
  • Weaker heat distribution on its lowest setting

Score: 81/100

Here’s one for those whose feet feel the chill most. It scored full marks for its extra foot warmth option, reaching a toasty temperature while the rest of the blanket stayed on its lowest setting.

It’s a speedy heater too, warming up in just 10 minutes (although this was longer than the advertised five minutes) and it distributed heat impeccably, even on the warmest of its nine settings.

The temperature wasn’t as stable as most we tested, but its controls are simple to use and it washed well. It didn’t cost much to run overnight either.

This well made blanket comes with some thoughtful design features, including the ability to position its control on either side of the bed.

Our expert was also impressed with its even heat distribution on all three heat settings, although the temperature fluctuated during prolonged use. Its straps are fiddly to use and there’s no timer, but it will shut off if it gets too hot. Overall, it's a reliable budget buy.

Dreamland Love Mornings Heated Duvet

Pros

  • Dual controls offer flexibility
  • Washed well with minimal shrinkage
  • Comes with a three-year guarantee

Cons

  • Temperature of dual controls wasn’t even
  • Temperature fluctuated over a few hours in use

Score: 72/100

This pure cotton comforter is the perfect pairing for your duvet in the winter months. There are six heat settings to cycle through, and it heated up in five minutes in testing, so you can quickly get cosy if your bed is on the chilly side. The temperature fluctuated slightly over three hours of monitoring, but overall, the comforter provides plenty of warmth and couples will love the dual controls. That said, the left side was six degrees hotter than the right when on the same setting in test.

It washed well, with the wires coming out intact and in the right positions, and the controls are easy to get to grips with. A nine-hour timer and automatic shut-off provides an extra layer of convenience and safety too.

Why you should trust the Good Housekeeping Institute

When the weather’s cold, you’ll often find our senior homes writer, Megan Geall, tucked up under her electric blanket. So, she's well placed to tell you all about them and ask all the important questions of our testers!

She works with the Good Housekeeping Institute's homes testing manager, Blossom Boothroyd to make sure our testing protocols cover everything you need to know before buying. Our experts then got to work in the lab, using and reviewing all the features of each electric blanket and ensuring they lived up to their claims.

Types of electric blanket explained

Under blankets

Under blankets operate a bit like the best mattress toppers and tend to come with elasticated straps or as a fitted sheet, so you can secure them to your bed and drift off on top. Many can run for up to eight hours at a time, so you stay warm all night long.

Over blankets and throws

In contrast, an electric throw blanket is meant for curling up under; they’re a more versatile choice as you can use them on the sofa or even at your desk if you work from home. Some even resemble a fleecy blanket, which not only feels extra soft against the skin, but will look good in your living room if you want to leave it out.

Throws tend to have shorter operating times though – most we tried time out after three hours.

How to choose an electric blanket

Electric blankets come with lots of different features and settings so it’s worth considering all your options before purchasing. These are the factors to look at.

Under blanket or electric throw: These are the two main types of electric blankets, so it’s best to decide which you want before shopping. Under blankets are fitted on top of your mattress, while heated throws can be layered over your duvet or used for cosying up on the sofa.

Heat settings: All the electric blankets on our list come with varying heat zones and settings – some include extra foot warmers too. Those with a wider range of heat settings offer more versatility.

Dual controls: Those with dual controls let you adjust the settings without disturbing your partner. These blankets – often size double and upwards – have left and right zones, so the settings can be customised if there are two of you in the bed. They’re perfect for couples that run at very different temperatures!

Price: You should choose your electric blanket based on the right type for your needs, any additional features that might be handy for how you wish to yours it, and your budget. Electric blankets in this list range from £33 up to £115.

Energy efficiency: Most electric blankets are very cost-effective, but there are some models that cost more per hour of usage than others. You’ll find information on this in each model’s key specs.

Are electric blankets safe?

All the heated blankets on our list have auto-shut off settings, which turn them off after a certain amount of time, minimising the risk of any accidents. Some even let you decide how long they run for, thanks to handy in-built timers.

Always check the manufacturer's guidance to make sure your choice of blanket is suitable for you.

Is it ok to sleep with an electric blanket on?

The London Fire Brigade recommends unplugging your electric blanket before you get into bed, unless it has a thermostat control. Even so, the safest way to use an electric throw or under blanket is to put them on before you go to bed, so it’s nice and toasty by the time you get in, and then you can turn it off before going to sleep.

Every electric blanket in our list has an auto shut-off setting though, which automatically turns the blanket off after a set period. This offers an extra layer of safety (and convenience) just in case you nod off before unplugging.

Is my electric blanket compatible with my mattress?

All electric under blankets are sold to be compatible with mattresses so just choose the right size when checking out (e.g. single, double, king). Electric throws typically come in one size, so have a look at the dimensions to see whether it will cover your whole bed if that's what you're looking for.

How much do electric blankets cost to run?

If you’re using an electric blanket to keep you warm overnight, it will use up to 1.54kWh in energy (measured over eight hours). However, this is the maximum we registered and is based off a dual control electric blanket, which use double the electricity versus a single controlled blanket. Most blankets in this list use between 0.1kWh (2.5p) and 0.5kWh (12p) in an eight-hour period.

Given the current economic climate, it’s understandable that you may be looking for more cost-effective ways to stay warm and save on your heating bill. Electric blankets can come in handy here, as they're becoming increasingly more energy efficient.

We've listed the cost to run per hour in the key specs for each product above. All prices are based on the electricity price capped by Ofgem at £0.2467/kWh.

Currently, our most cost-effective electric blanket is the Dreamland Cosy Dreamer Superior Cotton Mattress Warmer – a dual control under blanket that used 0.013kWh (0.3 pence an hour). The blanket that costs the most to run is the Silentnight Yours and Mine Dual Control Electric Blanket, using 0.193kWh (5 pence) in an hour.

How do I wash an electric blanket?

Yes, you can wash an electric blanket. All the ones we’ve tested so far have been machine washable so you can freshen them up. Make sure you always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and for more information, head to our guide on how to wash an electric blanket.

If you’re replacing an existing electric blanket, there are plenty of places for you to safely recycle your old one. Find your nearest electrical recycling point, or read our guide on how to donate or dispose of your appliances and tech for extra guidance.

The verdict on electric blankets

There are two standout electric blankets we’d recommend, and it all comes down to how you plan to use them.

If you want one to go on top of your mattress, then the Monogram by Beurer Heated Over Blanket ticked our boxes for speed and even, stable temperature distribution.

For one that’s got cosy evenings on the sofa written all over it, go for the Lakeland StaySnug Electric Blanket, which offers great value for money and plenty of cosiness.
