The best organic wines for Organic September 2023

best organic wine

Organic September is a month-long campaign lead by the Soil Association. It aims to raise awareness of organic products, brands and producers, and the incredible advantages that shopping organic can bring.

Benefitting the climate, nature and our health, there’s no better reason to shop organic this year — and no better place to start than your wine rack.

Best organic wine 2023

What is the difference between organic wine and normal wine?

Wines that are certified organic simply mean that the grapes used to create them have been grown without the use of unnecessary chemicals, such as pesticides.

Instead, a more holistic approach is taken, using nature’s tools to combat common growing problems — for example, allowing cows or sheep to graze on weeds. As such, it’s a much more eco-friendly choice and the wines arguably taste better, as they’re not masked in a cloud of chemicals.

Is organic wine really better for you?

Although often touted as hangover-free wine, sadly this is a bit misleading. However, many people do claim that the lack of chemicals in these wines can result in a clearer head the next day.

If you tend to opt for the organic option when buying your fruit and veg, it makes sense to apply the same principles to the wine aisle.

How we test organic wine

The Good Housekeeping Institute tasting panel sampled bottles of certified-organic red, white and rosé wines, across a wide range of price points.

From easy-drinking light whites to robust food-friendly reds, the team were looking for top quality, well-balanced styles, suitable for pairing with a number of cuisines.

Rich and spicy red fruit takes the lead here, but soft tannins ensure this is a very approachable, exceptionally smooth wine, made with certified-organic grenache and syrah grapes. Our panel felt this would be best suited to light meat dishes, such as redcurrant glazed lamb.

In Sicily, you’ll often find syrah blended with nero d'avola, a sun-loving red grape that when left to dry naturally as it is here, develops a delicious concentrated flavour. With sweet wild strawberries on the nose, and rich raisins and cherries on the palate, our testers loved the satisfyingly long finish.

Aside from being certified-organic, it's made in a carbon-neutral winery, and is also vegan.

Not only is our best budget buy organic, it also boasts Fairtrade credentials too. It’s a classic, bold Argentinian malbec — think plump, dark fruit flavours and a spicy finish — but with firm tannins and a well-rounded savoury edge, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was much more expensive.

One tester described it as “dangerously drinkable”, and we’d have to agree.
