best vermouth

Although delicious in its own right, vermouth is also a key ingredient in many classic cocktails — including the bitter negroni, timeless martini and — Nigella's favourite — the sbagliato (vermouth, campari and prosecco).

So, it's not a bad shout to add a bottle of the best vermouth to your drinks trolley in time for Christmas and the New Year celebrations.

Best vermouth to buy in 2023

What exactly is vermouth?

Vermouth is a fortified, aromatised wine (not a spirit!), flavoured with an array of herbs, botanicals and spice — think wormwood, orange, allspice, cardamom, clove, coriander and rosemary among others.

It can be white (bianco), rosé or red (rosso), and sweet or dry, although most red vermouths tend to be sweet. When making negronis, you’d opt for a red vermouth, whereas your classic James Bond-martini would require a white vermouth. In short, no two bottles are the same.

Should vermouth be refrigerated?

Vermouth is a product you want to drink fresh, and once opened you should refrigerate and use within a couple of months.

We don’t want to see this one gathering dust at the back of your drinks cabinet, and with such an exciting wave of new brands entering the market, we’re confident that won’t be the case.

What can I do with vermouth?

On the continent, you’ll normally find it served as aperitif, perhaps with simple snacks such as breads, nuts and tapas. And you needn’t be a mixologist to enjoy it. Vermouth is delicious drunk neat or with a splash of tonic over lots of ice (perhaps with a slice of lemon or orange if you’re feeling fancy) — making it just as accessible as your beloved G&T, the ultimate simple serve!

How we test vermouth

To find the best vermouth, the Good Housekeeping Institute’s panel of 10 WSET-trained experts and consumers tried 34 white, red and rosé bottles from the leading supermarkets and big brands.

Each was tried blind to prevent brand bias, and neat, with the whites chilled and the reds served at room temperature. Our experts were looking for an exciting array of botanicals that would work well in a number of serves.

These are the top-rated vermouths, from just £8 a bottle.
