As an analyst in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab with a background in fashion and a love of stretchy swimsuits, I’d be remiss to not share this year’s swimwear trends as the warm-weather season starts to ramp up. Don’t worry, these stylish looks are as comfy as they are cool. There’s no impractical picks here either: Only swimsuits that you can actually wear for a dip in the pool or splashing through the waves, not just basking in the sun. I’ve gathered some of my favorite on-trend styles from our favorite swim brands to help you feel confident this swim season.

Crinkled texture

Though these swimsuits seem pretty simple at first glance, they all have something exciting in common: texture. Whether you’re looking for a one-size swimsuit that’s super stretchy and forms to your shape or you still want something structured just with more pizzazz, crinkled fabrics are in.

Sleek shorts

Barely-there bottoms have a time and a place, but if you want a little more coverage, board shorts aren’t the only option. These stylish shorts are made of the same stretchy material as your favorite bikini bottoms yet lack the bulk of traditional swim shorts. They move with you instead of feeling restrictive. My favorite part of this trend? Being able to skip a cover-up or sarong, saving me some space and sanity when packing for vacation.

Pretty polka dots

Polka dots were everywhere for last year’s summer fashion, and this year the spots have jumped to beachwear. Though the classic black and white spots are still in, cute color combos like red and white or brown with light blue are popular options.

Sporty zip-ups

One surprising trend this summer: The surfer-style wetsuit gets a fashion-forward glow-up. Choose from animal prints, bold solids, or hourglass illusion styles that all have a retro sporty vibe. Unzip the front to cool off or show some more skin.

High-contrast trim

A small detail like a piped edge in a contrasting color can elevate a simple swim style like a maillot one-piece or basic bikini to another level. If polka dots and color-blocked prints are too bold for your taste, this trend is much more approachable. Chic trim around the neckline, bottoms, or both catches the eye and defines your silhouette.
