Walking is my favorite form of activity, and I know how important supportive sandals can be during warmer months. Luckily, our experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab tested several picks, and as an editor who walks at least five miles a day around New York City, I drew from my own experiences with various sandals.
We also teamed up with podiatrists—including Bobby Pourziaee, D.P.M., a podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon in Beverly Hills, California and Ira Deming, D.P.M., a podiatrist and foot surgeon in Bethesda, Maryland—to find the most comfortable walking sandals for women, including those experiencing plantar fasciitis or bunions.
Our top picks:
- Best overall walking sandals: Chaco Z/1 Classic Sandal
- Best value walking sandals: Teva Original Universal Sport Sandal
- Best walking sandals for travel: Naot Kayla Sandal
- Most popular walking sandals: Birkenstock Unisex Arizona Sandal
Pros
Molded footbed for excellent arch support
Snug fit with adjustable straps
Grippy rubber outsole
Easy to wear with a variety of outfits
Cons
The straps are narrow, according to some testers
This pair from Chaco offers a durable outsole and plenty of support. Textiles Lab Associate Director Emma Seymour found that when wearing these sandals, her “high arches felt completely supported, which is rare.” Meanwhile, the grippy rubber outsole keeps you grounded on all types of terrain.
Because of the simple design, Seymour also found them easy to style and paired them with casual and dressy outfits. The straps are a bit narrow, but they're easy to adjust to fit a variety of foot shapes. I also love that their website lets you can customize everything from the strap color to the buckles, making the shoes completely unique to your preferences.
TESTER NOTES: One of our testers said they are “a game-changer for someone who never bought into the concept of walking sandals." She was immediately impressed with "how effortless walking feels now with these sandals.” Another tester added, “They are very versatile for vacation and felt supportive for a sandal.”

Pros
Over 20 color options
Easy to dress up from day to night
Suede wrapped footbed offers ample support
Cons
Not designed to get wet
When you’re packing for a trip, you need footwear that works double-duty, which is why these stylish sandals stand out. They're versatile enough to wear while sightseeing, but they’ll also look nice with your dinnertime outfit. The cork and latex footbed is designed to fit your arches without a long break-in period; plus, it's wrapped in suede, which will mold to your specific foot shape. These stylish sandals come in nearly 40 colors, including sea green, black patent leather, and silver.
Tester notes: Testers found this pair supportive and comfortable, thanks to its contoured footbed. “They’re a lot more comfy than my old sandals,” shared one tester. While the metallic hues are great for weddings, I have this suede-pink pair, which adds a pop of color to dress up jeans or shorts.
| Material | Suede-wrapped cork and latex footbed, EVA outsole, and leather upper |
| Style | Fashion with Velcro closure |
| Sizes | 4–13 with narrow and wide sizing |

Pros
Footbed molds to your feet for personalized support
Simple slip-on design
A classic favorite for decades
Lots of color options
Cons
Not waterproof
First launched decades ago, these Birkenstock sandals have a loyal following that includes multiple GH staffers, some of whom have been buying pairs of these sandals for over 15 years.
The contoured footbed conforms to the shape of your foot as you wear it. Pourziaee, a podiatrist at Rodeo Drive Podiatry in Beverly Hills, California, is a fan too, saying they’re ideal for all-day walking and praising the personalized support.
TESTER NOTES: “They’re my go-to on travel days when I walk for miles as well as when I’m lounging at home or walking the dog,” said one tester. She especially loved how easy they were to slip on, but noted not to get them wet, as the leather can stain. Multiple testers told us they bought the waterproof version because they're lightweight and easy to rinse off, ideal for beach or pool days.
Additionally, our pros note that since these sandals lack a back strap, they aren’t well suited for longer walks or rougher terrain.
I have recently been won over by the Birkenstock Arizona style because I found a pair in patent leather with a big buckle. They look nice with a dress, even for work, but still have the comfort of the original style.
| Material | Suede-lined cork and latex footbed, EVA outsole, and leather upper |
| Style | Slides with buckle closure |
| Sizes | 5–15 with narrow sizing |

Pros
Over 40 color and pattern options
Footbed offers excellent cushioning
Ideal for adventure and travel
Cons
Only available in whole sizes
When Seymour wore these on a trip to Mexico, they were instantly comfy right out of the box. The EVA foam footbed and adjustable straps made them ideal for hiking or any sort of adventure. She found that the sandals were perfect to wear when walking around the resort or on a hike without getting uncomfortable.
The adjustable straps go over the front of the foot and around the ankle, making this a great option for people with wider or narrower feet. It's also easy to find a style you love since this pair is available in over 40 colors and patterns.
TESTER NOTES: “I love the cushioning,” shared one tester who especially liked its “squishy feel.” Another added, “I can't wait until the summer so I can wear these again!”
| Material | Molded EVA foam footbed, rubber outsole, and polyester upper |
| Style | Active with Velcro backstrap |
| Sizes | 5–12 |

Pros
Chic platform design
10+ color options
Lightweight
Cons
Non-adjustable straps
While many slides have a sporty look, these slides from REEF are chic, summery, and easy to slip on and off. When I tried these out, I noticed the cork footbed molds to your feet with continued use, and the platform design adds height without putting strain on your arches like a heel would. Note that because the only straps go over the top of the foot, they offer less ankle support and stability than sandals with a backstrap.
TESTER NOTES: One called them “lightweight but supportive,” and another said, “They are lightweight and are not wobbly.” Testers gave high marks for appearance but noted that the straps aren't adjustable, so some with wider feet found them a bit snug.
| Material | Cork footbed, EVA and PU midsole, and synthetic leather upper |
| Style | Platform slide |
| Sizes | 3–12 with limited half sizes |

Pros
Similar cushioning to a yoga mat
Easy to pull on
Stretchy strap fabric
Cons
Less arch support than other picks
This pair of sandals has a sole made from the same material as yoga mats to provide extra cushioning, and the fabric straps comfortably keep your foot in place. “When I saw this pair in our Lab, I was immediately impressed with the comfy cushioning that supported my joints like my favorite exercise mat,” Seymour said. “The straps are very stretchy to accommodate different foot shapes. These are not orthotic sandals, so other picks may provide more arch support.”
| Material | Foam footbed, rubber outsole, and synthetic upper |
| Style | Pull-on sandal |
| Sizes | 5-11 |

Pros
Stylish
Adjustable ankle strap
Available in 5 colors
Cons
Not good for long distances
Lack of arch support
If you’re heading to work or a party, this pair of strappy sandals from Toms is a mix of both comfort and style. While they don’t have the arch support of some others on this list, they’re a good bet for people without major foot issues who are walking shorter distances or around the office. The leather upper and the adjustable strap will snugly keep your foot in place.
Tester notes: “I walk to work daily, so I need sandals that can actually handle miles—not just look good and these delivered,” said Food Producer Tina Martinez, who owns these in two colors. “After a full summer and at least 50 miles, they were still comfortable, supportive, and stylish enough to wear with everything.”
| Materials | Leather upper, TPR outsole and midsole |
| Style | Dressy flat |
| Size | 5-12, with limited half sizes |

Pros
Adjustable straps
Quick-release lace lock
Molded footbed for arch support
Cons
Only available in full sizes
Add a bit of height without risking discomfort with this pair of platform sandals from Teva. The elastic laces on these make them a standout compared to other styles on this list, since they have the comfy foam support, but without the chunky strap look.
Tester notes: “It has a slight platform and a gladiator lace-up style that's easy to wear with dresses for daytime, but also has the functionality of a typical Teva—a durable, plush sole, adjustable straps, and arch support,” said Commerce Editor Madison McGee. “I've worn them to music festivals and walking around the city all day and have no issues! The one con is that the strap can get a little tight around your toes, although that's easy to adjust.”
| Material | VA midsole, rubber outsole, and REPREVE recycled polyester upper |
| Style | Gladiator-like elastic laces |
| Sizes | 5–11 |

Pros
Designed to wear on the trails
Great arch support and traction
Sweat wicking materials
Cons
Active design not suited for dressier wear
Expert hikers and everyday trailblazers love these durable sandals from Teva, which are especially great for uneven terrain and long walks. The contoured footbed supports your arch and provides cushioning to absorb impact.
We appreciate this pair's durable rubber outsole for extra grip and we like the adjustable Velcro straps that ensure a snug fit that keeps you supported mile after mile. Plus, the polyester webbing upper is designed to dry quickly. Just note that this pair has a more active design that's better suited for adventurous trips.
Tester notes: “Even on cobblestone streets, which can kill one's feet and ankles, they were super comfy the whole time,” said one tester who wore them on vacation.
| Materials | EVA midsole, rubber outsole, and REPREVE recycled polyester upper |
| Style | Active with Velcro closure |
| Sizes | 5-12 |

Pros
Anatomical footbed
Stretchy, elastic straps
Trendy, versatile design
Short wedge for lift
Cons
Not designed to wear in inclement weather
Plantar fasciitis is a type of foot pain caused when the tissue connecting your heel and toes becomes inflamed. Our pros appreciate that these walking sandals by Dr. Scholl's feature a contoured midsole that keeps the pressure off your arches—a very important feature to look for in shoes for plantar fasciitis. The outsole is not as durable or grippy as other pairs, so we recommend wearing this pair on casual outings in good weather conditions.
Tester notes: One tester who wore them while commuting called them “super comfy.” Another tester especially liked the cushioned footbed saying, “It molded well to my feet and didn’t weigh me down.” She added that the elastic straps “stretched easily when I put on the shoes and bounced back to keep them in place.”
| Material | Synthetic materials with a molded footbed and microfiber upper |
| Style | Fashion with stretchy straps |
| Sizes | 6–11 |
Pros
Adjustable velcro straps
Jute and cork midsole for extra layer of cushion
Stylish leather look
Cons
Might take time to adjust to the arch support
Spending your summer in a sundress? I love throwing on these cork sandals before heading out with friends because they look stylish without sacrificing comfort. The leather strap doesn’t feel too stiff, and the arch adds ample support. My favorite feature is that while this looks like a buckle sandal, it actually has a velcro strap, making them better for people with mobility issues.
I’ve worn these walking miles around New York, and I swear by them when my feet get swollen standing at events and bars. They’re my go-to event sandals because I know they’ll be comfortable enough to walk home afterwards. Just note that the arch support took me a few days to get used to, since it’s slightly further back on my foot than I expected.
| Materials | Cork midsole, leather upper, rubber outsole |
| Style | Fashion with velcro strap closure |
| Sizes | 5-12 |

Pros
Color and buckle style options
Contoured footbed
Great for flat feet
Cons
No backstrap, so not designed for longer distances
The traditional Arizona sandal is by far the most popular Birkenstock model on the market, but this Gizeh style has devoted fans as well. Instead of the signature dual strap seen on other models, this thong-style shoe has more of a flip flop feel, but with the support of the cork footbed that molds to your feet over time. Just note that because this pair is a slide-style sandal, it's not necessarily suitable for longer distances or rougher terrain.
Tester notes: “I can walk for hours in these, I take them on every vacation, and when they eventually wear out, I immediately get another pair,” said Commerce Editor Jessica Dukes. “I've tried Birkenstock dupes and they just don't have the same footbed and support as the Gizeh.”
| Material | Suede-lined cork and latex footbed, EVA outsole, and leather upper |
| Style | Slides with buckle closure |
| Sizes | 5-15 with narrow sizing |
Pros
Stylish metallic look
Cushioned EVA sole
Wedge-shaped platform for a heeled look
Cons
Doesn't come in half sizes
A lot of strappy sandal styles can be uncomfortable, but these are an exception. The inside of the straps and the footbed are both lined with a soft suede material for comfort. The EVA foam base has a slight wedge shape to give your heels a little bit of lift, but the cushioned sole makes this pair comfortable enough to get your steps in.
Tester notes: I’ve been wearing these to work a lot, including walking 2 miles to work and back without issue. I like that the back strap has a bit of stretch and elastic to make it fit more comfortably without causing blisters. I also have some dressier events coming up on the calendar, and I plan on wearing these.
| Material | EVA midsole, Rubber outsole, leather and suede upper |
| Style | Fashion sandal with ankle strap |
| Sizes | 5-11 |

Pros
Arch support and cushioning
Keeps toes fully protected
EVA midsole absorbs shock
Cons
Not as attractive as other picks
From water parks to river exploring, these sandals are up for any water adventure. “I wear this pair whenever I'm worried about keeping my toes safe on uneven terrain, especially on hikes near water,” Seymour said. “The ‘Metatomical Footbed’ design provides arch support and comfy cushioning with an EVA midsole.”
The bungee lace detail ensures a snug fit, and the polyester upper is waterproof so these sandals won’t weigh you down if they get wet. I also use these as a go-to for hiking, active summer days, or camping, as they have more ventilation than sneakers or hiking boots.
Tester notes: One GH analyst who tests all types of hiking gear said, “I find that Keen sandals and shoes provide excellent stability compared to other hiking/sandal brands I’ve tried.” She especially liked that “you feel secure in the sandal without fear of slippage.”
| Material | EVA foam midsole, rubber outsole, and polyester upper |
| Style | Active closed toe with bungee straps |
| Sizes | 5-12 |
How we chose the best walking sandals for women

The Good Housekeeping Institute's Textiles Lab tests all types of footwear, including walking shoes, running sneakers and hiking boots. Every year, hundreds of our consumer testers try out top footwear styles, and our pros will even saw shoes in half to see if they give proper arch support.
For this story, Seymour and I wore a variety of walking sandals while walking multiple miles in New York City and when traveling. Consumer testers with various foot shapes also wore different styles before giving feedback on comfort, fit, appearance and more.
We also spoke to podiatrists and foot surgeons Bobby Pourziaee, DPM, and Ira Deming, DPM for their professional insights and recommendations.
What to look for when shopping for a walking sandal

When picking the best walking sandal, “the goal is to replicate the support and stability of a good sneaker in an open, breathable design,” says Pourziaee. He suggests looking for ample cushioning and arch support, as well as a lightweight and breathable construction.
Deming also advises that the shoe should be comfortable immediately, “otherwise it's the wrong shoe for you, size or fit.” Pourziaee agrees, saying, “A well-designed walking sandal should feel secure without requiring your toes to grip.”
Below are considerations to keep in mind when shopping for walking sandals:
✔️Sizing and fit: There should be a little less than half an inch of space between your big toe and the front of the shoe when your heel is all the way at the back of the shoe, according to Deming. If the toe box is too narrow, you might need a different shoe or a wider width. Also, make sure your feet aren’t spilling out the sides. “Your feet swell throughout the day, so you will find a more true size if you measure your feet at the end of the day,” explains Deming.
✔️ Adjustable straps: Adjustable straps are great for a custom fit (and come in handy as your feet swell throughout the day.) Some styles have one adjustable strap, but adjustable straps on the back and across the top help the sandals fit even better.
✔️ Contoured footbed: Many fashion sandals have a completely flat footbed, but Pourziaee says to look for pairs with good arch support; they help ”distribute pressure evenly and reduce strain on the plantar fascia.” He also recommends pairs with a deep heel cup to keep the foot best aligned rather than slipping in hot weather.
✔️ Durable materials: Leather is pricier than synthetic materials, but it tends to last well over time while feeling soft and supple. When it comes to athletic styles, nylon is also an excellent option. Deming suggests looking for stretchy materials if you have bunions or hammertoe as it can better accommodate your foot shape.
✔️ Solid support: “While cushioning can feel comfortable initially, it doesn’t protect your foot over time without structure,” Pourziaee says. “The ideal sandal combines support (arch support, heel stability) with moderate cushioning. Overly soft sandals can increase strain by forcing the foot to stabilize itself.”
Top questions about walking sandals, answered by footwear experts

Can you wear walking sandals for long distances?
✔️ If you are planning on walking or hiking many miles over many days, you likely need a supportive sneaker rather than a walking sandal. Deming says to avoid walking too much in heeled sandals as heels make the arch higher “which can put less tension on the arch, but will cause problems over time.” Otherwise, look for adjustable straps, arch support, and a comfortable fit when buying a pair of sandals for extensive walking.
What kinds of sandals should I avoid for walking?
✔️ Steer clear of “flat, unsupportive flip-flops, flimsy sandals, backless sandals without support, and ultra-minimalist styles,” says Pourziaee. “If a sandal bends easily in half or feels unstable, it is not designed for distance walking.”
Why does my foot hurt after wearing sandals?
✔️ Some shoes are just not right for our feet, no matter how stylish they are. If you are having constant foot pain with your current sandals, it's time to get a new pair. You may be gripping your toes at the front of the sandal, which means the sandals don't fit properly. Deming suggests speaking with a podiatrist if you have specific concerns with footwear shopping to make sure your feet are properly taken care of.
What are the best shoes for plantar fasciitis?
✔️ Plantar fasciitis involves inflammation of a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes, causing pain in your heel. According to Deming, “You want to control the flattening of the arch.” You need a shoe that will keep your arch from collapsing and it's easier to find this type of support in a walking sneaker, but Deming is impressed with how many more sandals are available with ample arch support these days.
