They say aging doesn’t happen overnight, but sometimes it can certainly feel that way. I spent years feeling pretty smug about the fact that I never needed to wear undereye concealer. Then one day, in my late 30s, I suddenly noticed dark undereye circles and I’ve been applying concealer formulated for mature skin ever since.
Our top picks:
✔️ Best overall: Tarte Shape Tape Blur Concealer Stick
This cult classic earned perfect scores for applying evenly and not caking.
✔️ Best value: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer
A true multitasker that hides dark circles, corrects, highlights, and contours.
✔️ Best luxury: Prada Micro-Correcting Blurring Concealer with Peptides
Makeup artists gave it a perfect score for covering dark circles and blemishes.
✔️ Best for under eyes: Victoria Beckham Beauty The Concealer Pen with TFC8
The pen format makes it ideal for on-the-go.
✔️ Best for dark spots: Ciele Conceal & Protect SPF 50+ Spot Concealer
Helps improve the appearance of discoloration and prevent new dark spots.
"As we age, our skin naturally loses hydration and elasticity, so some fuller coverage concealers can settle into fine lines or actually emphasize texture," says Rose Siard, makeup educator and founder of Rose and Ben Beauty. That’s why makeup artists and our experts at the Good Housekeeping Beauty & Personal Care Lab recommend looking for products that have hydrating ingredients that camouflage without drying out skin more. Our best overall pick, Tarte’s Shape Tape Blur Concealer Stick, is a great example.
Nailing the right shade makes a major difference, and this is where color correction can help mature skin. "Go slightly lighter with a peach or neutral to neutralize darkness under eyes," Siard says. "For face and spot concealer, match your foundation."
The format matters too. "I would generally recommend liquid and creams but look for lighter, more forgiving formulas," Siard says. "Creams are great if you need a little spot concealing with control, and sticks can work but tend to be a little drier and require a little more blending. With any product, flexibility is key." (See Siard's application tips at the end of this story.)
