I’m a huge fan of stop-motion animation, and the Laika movies in particular—I can’t wait until Wildwood comes out later this year—so I’ve seen Coraline more times than I’d like to admit. I’ve seen it in 2D. I’ve seen it in 3D. I’ve watched it in the theater and at home. I even put it on the morning of my wedding day, so it could play in the background as I got into my dress.

I’ve also collected my fair share of Coraline figurines, with her in her rain coat, in her star sweater, and with her Other Mother. And while they looked fine on my shelves, when my daughter turned old enough to actually play with them, they all met the same fate—their heads all fell off. (Only Mr. Bobinski survives.) The way the character is designed, Coraline’s neck is so thin, it’s easy for a less-than-careful preschooler to snaps those faces right onto the floor. (And you thought the Other Mother was scary.)

So imagine the delight I felt when I learned that Monster High is debuting its own Coraline doll—one that doesn’t look nearly so fragile. It'll be available in the Mattel Shop and other major retailers starting on March 13.

Coraline is part of Monster High’s “Skullector” line, which is aimed at a more serious collector (and probably, like my figures of yore, not really for the hands of little ones). She comes wearing a red dress that’s fittingly done up in a button, needle, and skeleton key print—but she also has her signature rain gear, including a slick yellow rain coat and spiderweb boots. There's also a little cap she can wear, and a belt for the raincoat, and both have details that reference the Pink Palace on them.

The doll also comes with plenty of fun accessories, including a red cross-body bag, a button-eyed rag doll (shiver), and even The Cat. The whole thing can be set up on an included display stand, and it comes with a certificate of authenticity. But the high-end nature of this doll comes with a price, and the MSRP is $65. (The typical Monster High characters for kids, like Clawdeen and Draculaura, can usually be snapped up for less than $25.)

This is not the first time the Monster High Skullector series has appealed to my inner goth girl. I still think about the Rave'N Wednesday Doll (now just $46, hmmm), which comes outfitted in her school-dance dress from when she did the “Goo Goo Muck” number. And maybe it’s a good thing the Edward Scissorhands-inspired doll is sold out, because that could really take a bite out of my savings. The waiting-room characters from Beetlejuice, on the other hand, are still in stock, and are very tempting. But Coraline is still the one I have the deepest urge to buy—if for her cool blue hair alone.
