Knowing about the latest trends is quite literally part of my job, and I’m here to inform you that jorts are back. Ever since the early 2020s, I’ve started noticing an influx of shoppers searching for them each spring—and this year, more people seem to be exploring the look than ever. I didn’t need to open a data tracker to realize that, though—because lately, I’ve been seeing them everywhere on the streets and subways of New York City.
Home & Apparel Reviews Analyst Amanda Constantine, our in-house fashion pro, works in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, and she’s a big fan of the warm-weather look. “Once considered to be the antithesis of men's fashion, long denim shorts—nicknamed jorts—are now a women's style staple,” she says.
Constantine continues, “Whether they're tailored with pleats and a finished hemline or are rugged like a pair of cutoffs, jorts have been showing up summer after summer for the last few years, solidifying themselves as a trend and not just a passing fad.” She says she’s confident that jorts are here to stay.
When it comes to styling jorts, you have a few options based on the aesthetic you’re going for. “You can really lean into the more oversized, masculine look by pairing them with a boxy tee and sneakers,” Constantine says. “Or, you can opt for a fun juxtaposed style by wearing the jorts with a more fashion-forward top or frilly blouse and heels—I've shamelessly worn jorts for a night on the town.”
If you’re not sure where to start, try Constantine’s go-to. She likes to wear jorts with a button-up top and some loafers. Some of her favorites? These low-rise denim jorts and this distressed pair from Madewell.
BRB while I add some new denim to my cart before summer officially starts!
