Fun (or not so fun) fact: skin aging includes more than just wrinkles. You may notice that your face (and body) is no longer as firm as it once was—I certainly have—due to a decline in collagen and elastin, proteins that provide structural support and elasticity.

To remedy this, there's no shortage of skin tightening products proclaiming to counteract the appearance of lax skin with firming and lifting effects. Most commonly seen in serum and moisturizer form, these products contain ingredients like peptides, retinol, vitamin C, growth factors, and niacinamide that purport to stimulate collagen production or ones that plump skin, such as hyaluronic acid.

Our top picks:

But which tightening skincare products really work? To find out, the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty & Personal Care Lab rigorously tests anti-aging treatments including serums, neck creams, and night creams. Lab scientists use instruments to measure skin firmness before and after use, while consumer testers evaluate ease of use, performance, and satisfaction. The good news: both Lab and consumer tests showed us which skin tightening formulas actually work and gave visible results, quickly (think smoother, tighter skin). Below, find our Beauty Lab's top picks that truly firm skin.

  • Increased skin firmness by 39%, one of the highest levels in Lab tests

Testers Say: While some testers found the scent "heavy" and the texture "thick," others praised the formula as "rich" and "luxurious." Two testers noted, "I especially noticed firmer skin," and "my skin looked tighter and firmer."

  • Minimizes pores
  • Lightweight, fast-absorbing texture

Cons

(Note that it didn't rank as well at smoothing lines.) The serum also reduced the look of pores by 5% in imaging with the Visia Complexion Analyzer.

Testers Say: They gave it top marks for its "non-greasy" texture, fast absorption, pleasant scent, and making skin feel softer. "My skin definitely felt firmer and I thought looked less aged," a tester reported. "One of the best products I have tried in a while!"

Wrinkle + Texture Concentrate

Pros

  • Hydrating
  • Minimizes the appearance of wrinkles
  • Brightens skin

Cons

  • Strong chemical/medicinal scent

A triple threat, Matter of Fact's lightweight concentrate combines all-star anti-aging retinol with brightening vitamin C and clarifying azelaic acid. Think luminosity and tightening at its finest. Testers gave the serum the highest ratings for making skin appear visibly firmer and more radiant after four weeks of use, in addition to minimizing the look of wrinkles.

Testers reported noticeable effects, including “brightened skin tone,” “faded dark spots,” “smaller and clearer pores,” and “reduced fine lines.” The one drawback: they didn't love the medicinal or metallic scent (which comes straight from the ingredients, as it is a fragrance-free formula.)

Tester Says: "It's very smooth and it makes the skin feel tighter and more supple," shared one tester. "It's also very moisturizing; I don't need a moisturizer on top of the serum."

Pros

  • Nice texture
  • Leaves skin hydrated and not irritated
  • Brightens and evens out skin tone
  • Pleasant scent

Cons

  • May not help lessen the appearance of age spots

Among the night creams evaluated for Beauty Awards, this formula got high scores for absorbing quickly, having a nice texture, leaving skin feeling moisturized and firm, and brightening and evening out skin tone. Testers also liked the "pleasant" scent and that it did not cause any irritation (which easily can happen with any form of retinol). Their one con: the product may not help lessen the appearance of visible age spots.

Testers Say: "It really works—my skin looks more balanced, and my fine lines are noticeably less visible," one shared, while another said: "I experienced no irritation with this product, and I could definitely see a difference in my skin tone and firmness."

How we test skin tightening creams

double line break

The GH Beauty Lab has evaluated anti-aging treatments with firming claims, including serums, neck creams, and night creams. Among these evaluations, our 2020 Beauty Lab night cream test used the methodology described below.

For the night cream test, we evaluated nine products using a combination of Lab instrument measurements and consumer at-home testing. Twenty-two consumer testers used each cream at home daily for four weeks, then rated ease of use, improvements in skin's look and feel, and overall satisfaction.

Lab scientists collected 11,200 data points across multiple objective and consumer measurements, including instrumental measurements of firmness, hydration, and wrinkle reduction to quantify visible skin improvements. Top-performing creams were identified using a combination of objective Lab measurements and consumer feedback after four weeks of use.

What to look for when shopping for the best skin tightening creams

double line break

When choosing skin-tightening creams, both ingredients and technology matter. "Skin tightening products for the face tend to focus on building collagen and elastin and decreasing photo damage, and often uses retinoids and peptides to do so," says Jeanine Downie, M.D., a dermatologist and director at Image Dermatology P.C. in Montclair, New Jersey. For the body, she recommends looking for similar ingredients as those in face creams, including peptides and vitamin A derivatives (like retinol).

Here's what to look for when shopping for skin-tightening products:

✔️ Collagen stimulation/production. "Ingredients like vitamin A and peptides help promote collagen production and provide structure to the skin," says GH Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann. "Retinol is the most potent ingredient that helps build collagen and elastin, which leads to tighter, smoother skin."

✔️ Fortifying skin's barrier function. "Ceramides, niacinamide, and fatty acids can improve and strengthen skin's defense and help repair damage," Wizemann says.

✔️ Exfoliation. Certain ingredients, like AHAs, remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover.

✔️ Moisturization. Nourishing skin can improve skin's elasticity and suppleness, making it appear plumper and firmer. Humectants that hold and bond to water molecules are often used, including glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and sodium PCA.

✔️ Temporary tightening. Certain ingredients have an immediate effect including clay-like ingredients called silicates, plant gums—such as guar gum and acacia senegal gum—and polymers like pullulan and seaweed extracts which form a film over skin.

Both Wizemann and Dr. Downie agree that you should always look for products that have been clinically tested and backed by scientific studies. Consider consulting a dermatologist or skincare professional if you are unsure which product is safe and specifically right for you.

Do skin tightening creams actually work?

double line break

Topical skincare products can work to firm skin, but they take time and may not produce dramatic results.

“Many studies show that these ingredients can increase collagen production or decrease collagen breakdown,” Dr. Turegano explains, “but you need to use them consistently for months to see an effect, and they aren’t going to perform miracles or give you a facelift.”

Decades of GH Beauty Lab testing has confirmed that some leave-on skincare treatments can help firm skin over time, says GH Beauty Lab Senior Chemist Danusia Wnek. “We have measured up to about a 40% improvement in facial skin elasticity with the Cutometer machine after four weeks of use of formulas like night creams,” she notes.

Dr. Downie recommends applying skin-tightening creams twice daily for the best results. "To maximize the benefits, it's also crucial to prevent sun damage, which accelerates skin aging and laxity," she advises. She emphasizes the importance of using sunscreen on your face and all exposed areas of your body every day for optimal protection.

What is the most effective way to tighten skin?

linebreka

While certain skin tightening creams can have a firming effect when used consistently, dermatologists offer noninvasive skin-firming and -tightening procedures that can have effects that are more pronounced and lasting.

These include radiofrequency (like Thermage), microfocused ultrasound (such as Ultherapy) and light therapy, says Heather Woolery-Lloyd, M.D., a dermatologist in Miami, Florida. They heat deeper skin layers to stimulate collagen production, tighten existing collagen fibers, and create a lifting effect, Dr. Turegano adds.

While they are an investment, "these procedures typically yield the best results for skin sagging and laxity,” says Dr. Woolery-Lloyd. “Radiofrequency and laser skin tightening cause collagen fibers to contract and stimulate new collagen production, enhancing firmness, and reducing sagging,” Dr. Turegano explains. “Ultrasound therapy is particularly effective for lifting brows, minimizing jowls, and tightening the skin under the chin.”

But because most of the treatments involve triggering skin collagen production, the bulk of the benefits aren’t immediate: “Most people start to see initial improvements in skin firmness and tightness within two to three months after treatment, continuing for up to six months as collagen production increases,” Dr. Turegano says.

What tightens skin immediately?

linebreak

“Ingredients that can tighten skin immediately and temporarily include clay-like ingredients called silicates, for example magnesium aluminum silicate,” Butler says. “Other ingredients that can form a film over the skin to temporarily tighten it include plant gums like guar gum and acacia senegal gum, and polymers like pullulan, seaweed extracts, and other film formers.”
