There are few things worse than buying a new bra that looks great on, feels supportive, and is well-made only to find out it's totally noticeable under your clothes. Bras with bulky seams, lots of padding, prominent darts, and tons of embellishments can look lumpy and eye-catching under all kinds of tops, even basic tees. Thankfully, I'm not the only one who has experienced issues, so there are plenty of bra brands on the market that carry T-shirt bras. These bras are made for everyday use in mind and offer medium coverage, often with lightly lined or molded cups to create a seamless look under tops—emphasizing your natural shape.

Our top picks:

As an analyst in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab who covers intimate apparel, I've tested dozens of bras from some of the most well-known brands, along with up-and-coming designs, in the Lab, with consumer testers, and on myself. During my four years of bra testing, I've come to appreciate the T-shirt bra the most. Its simplistic style is highly versatile, and my T-shirt bras are the most worn out of any in my drawer—in fact, I've really stopped wearing anything else. Here are the best T-shirt bras, according to Textiles Lab data, consumer feedback, and my personal expertise.

Pros

  • Rated as most comfortable by testers
  • Smooth outer cups and inner lining
  • Performed well in our durability tests

Cons

  • Some testers said lace was noticeable under clothes

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Someone looking for a wardrobe staple that looks and feels great and is long-lasting

Our top-tested bra, the Pure Luxe style from Natori is loved by GH staffers and testers alike and earned the top scores in our Textiles Lab tests too. The bra performed well with testers of different cup sizes and was rated as the most comfortable of more than 200 styles. Even more, the majority of testers said they preferred this style over the ones they typically wear. The bra kept its shape after being stretched for a set period of time in the Lab and help up nicely in wash tests.

It has a traditional design with molded foam cups, supportive underwire, and adjustable lace straps. The coverage is full but not bulky, and it can easily be worn with low-cut tops without peeking out.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: I was wary of this bra at first because I really don't love lace details or charms on my bras—they always seem to show through my tops. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this bra was still virtually invisible under my clothing. A few testers pointed out that the lace was visible under certain tops, but I haven't had the same problem.

According to our evaluations, the bra runs true to size and testers ranging from B- to DDD-cup said it was easy to find the right fit. When asked about the material, one tester shared, "The inside of the bra is super smooth and feels good on my skin." Another commented, "It's buttery soft and really comfortable. It wasn't scratchy anywhere, and I could barely feel it when I wore it all day."

Pros

  • Testers gave perfect scores for comfort and support
  • Convertible straps for racerback
  • Crossed design between the cups

Cons

  • Underwire extends too far back for some

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Those on a budget looking for an inexpensive bra that doesn't skimp on quality

This affordable bra from Maidenform performed better in our tests than some styles more than four times its price. Not only is it typically on sale for under $25, the bra also earned perfect scores from testers for its comfort, support, and overall fit.

According to the brand, this bra is a demi-style, but we found the cups to be pretty full coverage compared to other bras we've tested. A standout feature in our evaluations was the overlapped gore between the cups, which allows the bra to lay snuggly against the chest. It also performed well in our stretch recovery tests, returning to its original shape.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: Most testers loved the shape of the underwire and said it felt comfortable and supportive. One commented that she loved how the "underwire and lightly lined cups held everything in place." That said, the underwire on this bra extended back just a little too far for me, causing it to poke into my sides under my arms. Every bra is designed a bit differently, and every body is different.

Despite the wire not working for me, I loved the crossing at the band, which helped prevent gaps and kept the bra flush against my ribs. Testers agreed, including one who shared, "It's a great everyday bra. It's a bra that I don't have to think about while I'm wearing it... It doesn't gap anywhere, and it looks seamless under clothing. I also crossed the straps in the back to wear with a racerback top, which is a nice feature."

Pros

  • Smooth brushed fabric
  • Subtle lift without an underwire
  • Testers gave it high ratings for comfort

Cons

  • Material stretched some in our tests

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Someone looking for support and lift without an underwire

Wireless bras have gotten a bad rap for not being as supportive as an underwire style, but that's not the case with this wireless bra from Soma. The Enbliss bra has molded cups with light padding for a natural, figure-enhancing shape. It offers slight cleavage but doesn't smash the chest to achieve the look, and the elongated band extends further down the chest for added support.

The bra performed well in our Textiles Lab washability evaluations, but we did note that the band stretched out slightly in our stretch recovery tests. It has a padded hook and eye closure for added comfort in the back and adjustable straps for a better fit.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: This bra uses a brushed fabric that's buttery and smooth. Testers loved the feel, including one who described it as "super soft and breathable." The seamless design looks incredible under formfitting tops too. One B-cup tester shared, "I liked that it felt very smooth and supportive and fit nicely under a T-shirt with no bumps or bulges." Another tester commented, "The smooth fabric makes it a great bra to wear under most outfits including T-shirts."

I wear a 34D or DD bra and have a full chest, so I often experience some bulging at the edges of my cups, but that lumpy look disappeared when I first tried on this bra. The bra fitter and I were both wowed by how quickly it transformed the shape of my chest. It has become one of my go-to styles for days when I want a little lift but don't want a ton of bulk. Plus, it's one of the most comfortable bras I own, and it's easy to forget I have it on.

Pros

  • Design provides separation between the breasts
  • Fuller coverage cups
  • Testers loved the combination of function and style

Cons

  • Small bows can be seen through certain tops

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Those with large chests that want something supportive but not frumpy

When you have large breasts, finding the perfect bra becomes even more difficult because most bras have limited size ranges and aren't designed to accommodate bigger chests. However, Freya is one of our favorite bra brands that is specifically available in large cup sizes—this bra comes in UK sizing through HH cup (equivalent to US size L).

Not only is it available in larger cup sizes, the bra is also designed with slightly thicker straps for support, a structured underwire that extends upward to separate the breasts, and soft molded cups for shaping without too much added lift. The bra also performed well in our Textiles Lab evaluations, resisting wear in our washability and stretch tests.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: Our consumer testers ranging from cup sizes D–G were impressed by how comfortable the bra felt. They also appreciated the fit. One tester shared, "The bra was very supportive and held everything perfectly in place," and added, "it fit just right and it is hard to find a bra like that for me."

Testers also appreciated that the bra was functional but didn't feel dowdy. One commented that she loved how it didn't look "like a granny bra." Another described the style as "feminine, flirty, and cute." The small bows between the chest and on the straps aren't flush with the bra, so they are a little more noticeable under tight tops, but the bra is hard to detect under a regular tee.

One thing to note: Because the bra is available in UK sizing, it's extra important to review the size chart before making your purchase. Our testers were happy with the bras they tried and said they fit true-to-size, but some online reviewers have shared that the bra runs small. When I wore this bra, I ordered my typical size and was initially concerned that the cups were too large, but they fit great—they're just fuller coverage.

Pepper pepper

Pros

  • Smoothing band
  • Specifically designed for smaller cups
  • Testers said brand's bras lift and shape

Cons

  • Some testers have noticed wear in the wash

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Those with small busts who want some structure and lift

Pepper's bras are designed for those with AA–B cup sizes, so they help accentuate bodies with less breast tissue. The bra cups are made to fit small chests without gaps, and they're lightly lined for coverage. Both the cups and the band are seamless for an invisible look under clothing, and the band is wider on this style for added smoothing.

When we've tested Pepper's bras in the Textiles Lab, we have been impressed by how well they recovered to their original shape after being stretched for a set time. They also looked great post-wash. Some testers have noted fraying and minor tearing with regular laundering, but we haven't had that issue in the Lab.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: Our testers with A and B cups were impressed by how great their breasts looked in Pepper's T-shirt bra. One shared, "The cups makes my breasts look rounder and fuller at the top." Another commented, "I loved that there was no gapping between my skin and the bra and that the fabric of the cups was super smooth so that it laid flat under T-shirts."

When it comes to support, our testers gave Pepper's bras top marks. A tester shared, "The bra consistently stays in place as I move around during the day. I did not experience any straps falling or the bra riding up," and she further added that she didn't experience chafing with this bra like she has with many others she has worn.

Pros

  • Smooth, stretchy material
  • Simple design looks invisible under clothes
  • Impressive range of sizes and colors

Cons

  • Some testers said wire digs into underarms

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: This T-shirt bra is ideal for users looking for a "true nude" shade.

Skims is founded by celebrity Kim Kardashian and regularly sells out of stock because of its virality. The brand is known for its basic intimates and loungewear, and this is its most basic bra. The T-Shirt Bra is lightly lined but has structured, molded cups for shaping and lift. The demi-coverage cups combined with the soft and stretchy mesh material look seamless under tops.

It comes in one of the largest shade ranges we've ever seen, including seven "nude" color options, along with black and limited edition styles. The size range is equally as impressive—from 30–46 bands and AA–H cups.

During our Textiles Lab tests, the bra earned just average scores for stretch recovery, so it might not be the most durable option long-term, but mine still looks nearly new after about a year of consistent wear. Testers found it to hold up well with regular washing as well.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: Testers were impressed by the material, with one sharing that the "silky" fabric" didn't cause any redness or itchiness," on her normally sensitive skin.

When it came to fit, testers overall found the bra to run true to size. I was able to comfortably wear my standard bra size without gaping or spillage, and I particularly liked how much lift this bra provided without needing bulky padding.

One tester said, "The cups and band feel more elastic than my usual T-shirt bras," and she appreciated that the bra didn't restrict her movement. However, some testers said the underwire extended backwards too far, causing discomfort when it dug into their underarms.

Pros

  • Available in half-sizes
  • Pleated straps stay in place
  • Received perfect scores for comfort

Cons

  • Showed signs of wear in washability tests

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Someone who has trouble finding the right size and wants a classic, everyday bra

To help you find the perfect size, ThirdLove offers a "Find My Fit" quiz on its website that takes into consideration your current bra size, any issues you have with your bra, and what you're hoping to get out of your bra, whether it be more lift, breathability, support, etc.

Even more—the brand offers half-sizes. Half-sizes are ideal for those of us whose bra sizes fluctuate or for someone who experiences gapping or spillage when sizing up or down. I wear ThirdLove's D1/2, and I've never had a bra fit my chest better than this.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: The bra received perfect scores for comfort and for staying in place from all of our testers, ranging from A–D1/2 cups. This is one of my personal favorite bras because it stays put. The pleated straps remain on my shoulders instead of sliding off throughout the day, and I never find myself having to readjust band or cups. One tester with a D-cup said the cups didn't offer enough coverage, and I'd agree that they're more of a demi-cup, but the style didn't impact the performance at all for me.

Most testers agreed that the bra ran true to size, but one tester was recommended to size up in her band and down in her cup after taking ThirdLove's fit quiz. She was pleasantly surprised with her results and found the new size to fit her well.

Like we've noted in our Textiles Lab tests, the cup material is prone to puckering and rippling. While it still looks smooth under my tops and feels supportive, after washing it just a couple of times the cups have a worn texture.

Pros

  • Smooth material shapes without molded cups
  • Wide straps for support
  • Chic gold hardware

Cons

  • Some testers said band feels snug

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Those who prefer the flexible feel of a bra without molded cups but still want coverage

Not everyone loves the feel of molded, padded cups, and if you fall into that category, consider Cuup. Cuup's bras include a variety of styles in mesh, microfiber, and lace fabrics—all free of lining. The Scoop style is one of our favorites. The neckline scoops towards the chest and offers demi-coverage, so it can be paired with lower-cut tops and dresses.

The straps are thick and lie flat against the shoulders, and the adjustable hardware is a chic gold metal, so it looks great even when it peeks out from beneath your top. This microfiber fabric is very lightweight and silky smooth. Plus, the bra has seamless construction, so it's easily hidden under your clothes. It provides some coverage over the nipples, but because there isn't any padding, this bra isn't as modest as other styles.

WHAT TESTERS SAY: This bra is widely worn by GH editors and analysts. I personally opt for Cuup's bras for a night out, but many of our staffers wear them everyday. Despite being unlined, the bra is actually pretty supportive. I have a larger cup size and still feel like The Scoop bra lifts my chest and provides subtle shaping, but our testers with small cup sizes particularly love this style.

The underwire lies flat against the chest but is very structured and can feel a little restrictive. I prefer to size up in Cuup's bras, and some of our testers agreed, noting that the band runs snug. Testers also said the bras are comfortable, without unwanted poking or prodding.

How we test bras

line break

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we evaluate bras for performance and durability, along with conducting consumer testing. In recent years, we have tested more than 200 different styles of bras from popular and lesser-known brands, including many T-shirt bras. Our hundreds of consumer testers include a wide variety of body types and cup sizes from AA–H and band sizes 30–48.

Here's how we assess each style, both in and outside of the Lab:

Advertisement - Continue Reading Below
an analyst measuring stretch recovery for a bra
Good Housekeeping/Philip Friedman

✔️ Stretch recovery: Bras are made with materials that allow them to stretch for a good fit, but they also need to keep their shape after being stretched to continue providing support. To ensure the elastic in the bras doesn't lose its stretch with use, we first mark a section on the bra and then stretch the bra to a standard measurement. Next, we clamp the stretched bra in place for two hours. Once we release the bra, we measure the markings to determine how well the material returned to its shape after one minute (shown here). We remeasure the material after one hour.

✔️ Washability: We launder each bra according to its care label and assess them for properties like shrinkage and appearance after washing, including any rippling, misshaping, or tears.

✔️ Wear tests: Consumer testers with a wide range of bra sizes wear the bras and then fill out surveys, rating the bras for factors like overall fit, comfort, support, appearance, visibility under clothes, and even how easy they were to put on and take off and if they stay in place. We also ask testers to share comments about what they specifically like and dislike about each bra, including in comparison to other bras they've worn.

What to look for when shopping for a T-shirt bra

line break

The category of T-shirt bras includes a variety of different styles of bras—all with the overarching goal of appearing invisible under a basic tee. When shopping for a new T-shirt bra, here are a few things to consider:

✔️ Sizing: The most important aspect of bra shopping is finding the correct size. We recommend measuring your bra size if you haven't in the last year. After determining your best size, including cup and band size, consult the brand's size chart to determine your best fit. If available, consider consulting with the brand's fit expert.

✔️ Underwire: These are the plastic or metal wires that line the bottom and sides of a bra's cup for added structure and lift in the chest. Not all T-shirt bras have wires, but an underwire can provide extra support that may be particularly beneficial if you have a large chest. For a more comfortable bra, we suggest opting for a wireless style.

✔️ Padding: The majority of T-shirt bras have minimal padding—just enough to provide some lift and shaping of the breasts but not to enhance cleavage.

✔️ Straps: Most bras have adjustable straps with small sliders that move up and down the straps to shorten or lengthen them to best fit your body. Wider or thicker straps can provide more support for larger chests and can feel more comfortable on the shoulders. Some of the bras we feature have convertible straps, meaning the bra straps can be swapped from a traditional style to a racerback or cross-back.

✔️ Closure: All of the T-shirt bras we feature have the most popular closure type: hook-and-eye clasps. The clasps connect in the back of the band and can be adjusted for a more secure or looser fit across the chest. Some bras have front closure, while others are designed to be pulled over the head with no closure.
