Mascara is already a makeup bag staple for many, but waterproof mascara is the one you reach for when you need it to last. The best waterproof formulas do more than lengthen, thicken, and separate—they hold up through humidity, sweating, watery eyes, and long days without budging. When you need a mascara that can keep up with whatever the day brings, a reliable waterproof formula has you covered.

Our top picks:

To find the best waterproof mascaras that last, the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab experts drew on more than a decade of testing, evaluating over 74 waterproof mascaras. In the Lab, each formula underwent a waterproof test to evaluate its resistance to smudging, smearing, and running after repeated water exposure. More than 130 consumer testers also tried the mascaras at home to assess wear, ease of application, and waterproof performance at home. Combining Beauty Lab testing with insights from more than 2,000 consumer data points, these are the best waterproof mascaras.

  • Curls, lifts, and lengthens lashes
  • Applies smoothly

Cons

  • Only available in one shade

This mascara took the top spot in our waterproof mascara test, earning perfect scores in the Lab for resisting running and smudging. It also impressed testers with its ability to create their ideal lash look sans smudging or flaking. It has a unique curved wand that makes application easy, helping to smoothly coat, curl, lift, and thicken lashes. The only downside is that it’s available in just one shade: black.

Testers said: “I did not have to use a curler before applying,” one said. Others noted it held up through naps, swimming, Florida humidity, and even showers without running.

Great Lash Waterproof Mascara

Pros

  • Adds lift and curl
  • Doesn't flake or smudge
  • Smooth application

Cons

  • Doesn't add much volume

The iconic pink and green tube is a time-tested favorite for a reason and it’s at an affordable price. The formula, available in two shades, applies smoothly and doesn’t clump or flake all day long. While it doesn’t deliver as much volume as some other mascaras we tested, it excelled at lifting and lengthening lashes. It also showed solid waterproof performance in Lab evaluations, resisting smearing and running well.

Testers said: "It's so easy to put on, looks amazing, and doesn't get all clumpy during the day," one said. "The smaller brush also helps me apply it neatly to every lash."

Lash Sensational Sky High Waterproof Mascara

Pros

  • Adds length and definition
  • Resists smudging well
  • Easy to separate lashes

Cons

  • Doesn't curl lashes well

True to its name, this mascara helps lift lashes sky high while staying put through it all. In Lab testing, it earned a perfect score for resisting smudging when exposed to moisture. Consumers also praised the long-lasting formula, and said the flexible wand made it easy to coat and separate lashes while delivering length and definition. Our testers’ one gripe? "I wish that it kept my lashes curled for a bit longer."

Testers said: “It stayed on for almost 12 hours, even through a nap, without flaking,” one tester said. “I work outside in Florida and sweat most of the day, and it stayed on without running,” said another.

Pros

  • Adds volume and thickness
  • Top tester satisfaction score
  • Removes easily

Cons

  • May flake throughout the day

Unlike most waterproof mascaras, Covergirl’s Lashblast Clean Waterproof Mascara, a tester’s favorite, stays put throughout moisture exposure yet it is easy breezy to remove at the end of the day. It earned top spot for volumizing and thickening among the testers and in the Lab it didn’t run when exposed to water. But, a few did notice some flaking throughout the day.

Tester’s said: A few noted commented that they liked how it made lashes look “fuller,” “longer,” and “thicker.” One tester said, “it was easy to remove with eye makeup remover but it did not flake or smudge even when cutting onions.”

Pros

  • Adds volume and length
  • Doesn't irritate eyes
  • Available in 3 shades

Cons

  • Can be difficult to remove

Another cult classic topped our testing! Although the bristles are short and the diameter of the wand is wide, testers still said this brush was the easiest to use and applies smoothly. The lengthening and volumizing formula also earned perfect scores for being non-irritating, even on sensitive eyes and skin. To top it all off, Lab testing confirmed it doesn’t run even when doused with water but the tradeoff is that it can be tough to remove.

Testers said: Testers “love this mascara,” especially for sensitive eyes. “I liked the thicker brush which helped to increase the volume and it didn’t seem to run or smudge even with contacts,” one said. Another said, “I could work out with the mascara on and not have it running down my face by the end.”

How we test waterproof mascara

best mascara
Danusia Wnek

The Good Housekeeping Beauty Lab has evaluated more than 74 waterproof mascaras over the past decade using a combination of Lab and consumer testing.

First, Beauty Lab experts evaluated each mascara’s waterproof claims using a water-resistance test. In the Lab, testers applied a controlled amount of mascara, allowed it to dry for a set period, then splashed their lashes with a set amount of warm water before assessing how well the formula resisted smudging and running.

Then, more than 130 testers were recruited to use their assigned waterproof mascara at least three times before completing a standardized questionnaire. They rated each mascara on ease of use, performance, and overall satisfaction, evaluating everything from application (including smoothness and brush design) to the finished look (such as volume, curl, definition, and thickness), wear throughout the day (including whether it flaked, ran, or smudged), and ease of removal.

Based on more than a decade of testing, including more than 2,000 consumer data points, we identified the top-performing waterproof mascaras featured in this article.

What to look for when shopping for waterproof mascaras

linebreak

We recommend considering the following when searching for waterproof mascaras:

✔️ Look for the term “waterproof” on the label: It is common to find the same mascara in both waterproof and non-waterproof versions. If you are looking for a waterproof mascara, make sure the product you select says “waterproof.” You can often find this either next to the name of the product or in the shade name.

✔️ Color preference: Most of these mascaras come in traditional black, but some are also available in a brown-black or brown. If you prefer a more natural-looking mascara, check the website or store for these more subtle options.

✔️ Benefits: If you are looking for fuller lashes, look for the claims such as “volumizing” or “thickening” on the product packaging. “Lengthening” claims are great for making lashes look longer, while “curling” claims help provide lift.

✔️ You may need additional tools:

  • Lash Curler: If you are looking for an enhanced curl effect, we suggest curling lashes with a lash curler before application. We recommend the Tweezerman Promaster Lash Curler, a Good Housekeeping Beauty Award winner.
  • Makeup remover: Waterproof mascaras are known to be harder to wash off so you will need a good makeup remover. See our tips below for an easier removal process.

How is waterproof mascara different from regular mascara?

"Waterproof mascaras are typically superior in keeping lashes lifted and curled," says Good Housekeeping Beauty Lab Director Sabina Wizemann. While "they are usually a bit stickier [and] require more time to dry, once set, they're designed to not smudge," she says.

That's because "waterproof mascara contains ingredients like synthetic waxes, silicone, and film-forming agents that create a water-resistant barrier [which] help the mascara adhere better to the lashes and resist being washed away by water, sweat, or tears." These robust additions may feel heavier on the lashes, yet keep lift and curl better.

Is it OK to wear waterproof mascara every day?

double line break

Nope, stick to special occasions only. "Because waterproof mascaras have stronger adherence to the lashes, they can sometimes lead to more lash breakage or loss during removal if not done carefully," explains Wizemann. Waterproof formulas require harsher solvents to remove; the pulling and rubbing required to remove can cause lashes to fall out and irritate the skin around the eyes over time.

Because of this, Wizemann suggests reserving waterproof mascara for special events only, or for regular wearers, up to three times a week. "Use regular or go mascara-free on other days to give your lashes a break."

What's the best way to remove waterproof mascara?

double line break

Because waterproof mascaras are designed to withstand pretty much anything, you should rely on a gentle eye makeup remover formulated for waterproof cosmetics, like Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover, for end of the day removal. Our experts also recommend wearing waterproof mascara sparingly, since the removal can be irritating to skin and eyes.

"Always make sure to saturate lashes thoroughly with eye makeup remover before removing the mascara," says Wizemann. Hold a cotton pad soaked with remover on the eye for a few seconds before swiping downward and away. Wizemann suggests using a Q-tip saturated in makeup remover to gently clean mascara in between lashes to avoid smudges the next morning.
