Why is cottage cheese being recalled?

According to the FDA's notice, the cottage cheese is being recalled "due to the possibility of liquid dairy ingredients used in the items not being fully pasteurized according to state regulatory standards."

It noted that no illnesses or hospitalizations have been reported in connection with this recall; however, "consuming products that are not fully pasteurized can pose a significant health risk, especially to the young and elderly or immunocompromised individuals."

As the FDA separately warns, "Raw milk can carry dangerous germs such as Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, Campylobacter, and others that cause foodborne illness, often called 'food poisoning.' These germs can seriously injur the health of anyone who drinks raw milk or eats products made from raw milk." However, it adds that these germs can be especially dangerous to "people with weakened immune systems (such as transplant patients and individuals with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and diabetes), children, older adults, and pregnant women."

Where was the cottage cheese shipped?

The recalled cottage cheese products were sold under the Great Value label and were distributed to Walmart stores and distribution centers in 24 states: Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Tennessee, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Per the notice, the products were distributed between February 17 and February 20, 2026.
