- SPAM has launched a limited-edition Hello Kitty collaboration featuring a collectible can design.
- The partnership is part of SPAM’s “Tour de Sizzle” campaign.
- Fans can enter to win collectible items through June 23 or look for the cans at grocery stores and shop.spam.com while supplies last.
I love a good partnership, so when SPAM announced a collaboration with Hello Kitty, I was beyond curious. Both are iconic brands, for sure, but just how would they come together?
Over the decades, SPAM has become a staple in Asian-American and Pacific Islander cuisine, with dishes such as SPAM musubi and bibimbap. The fandom began during World War II, when American troops introduced canned meats, including SPAM, to parts of the Pacific and Asia, according to Smithsonian Magazine. Hello Kitty, created in 1974 by Japanese illustrator Yuko Shimizu, also has a massive following across Asia and has since expanded worldwide.
Earlier this week, SPAM announced a limited-edition collaboration with Sanrio, Hello Kitty’s parent company. The partnership includes the instantly recognizable character who, according to her creators, is actually not a cat but a little British girl who stands five apples tall and weighs three apples.
"This collaboration brings together two brands with incredibly passionate fan communities and a shared ability to spark joy across generations," said Stephanie Swift, brand manager of the SPAM brand, in a recent press release. "Pairing Hello Kitty® with the iconic SPAM® brand can in such a playful and collectible way felt like a fun opportunity to create something fans would genuinely be excited to find on shelves."
What's the SPAM x Hello Kitty collaboration?
The collaboration introduces a limited edition can featuring Hello Kitty enjoying SPAM musubi. This collab is part of SPAM’s “Tour de Sizzle” campaign, which highlights global dishes that have cemented SPAM's status as a culinary legend. It also includes a microsite (tourdesizzle.com) where fans can explore Hello Kitty’s kitchen and follow her and SPAMMY’s (SPAM’s mascot) culinary adventures around the world and try some iconic recipes, like SPAM bibimbap and SPAM poutine.
Additionally, through June 23, you can visit the site to enter to win a Tour de Sizzle Collector's Kit or a Limited-Edition Hello Kitty SPAM can (Psst. take a look at what’s cooking on the stove).
Where can I get the SPAM x Hello Kitty can?
If you didn’t score a prize on the site, you can look for the limited edition Hello Kitty SPAM can at your local grocery store or on shop.spam.com. Since this is a limited edition product, the can will be available while supplies last. And judging by how passionate both of these fandoms are, I’m willing to bet they won’t last long. So, if this collab is calling your name, consider that your cue to head to the store.
