Quality sleep isn’t a luxury; it’s essential for your health and happiness. To help you build a bed that truly supports better rest, fiber scientists at the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab spent six months testing over 300 bedding products. After assessing items in the Lab for factors like fabric strength, pilling resistance, and washability, and sending products to over 800 at-home sleep testers across the country for their insights, our experts selected these winners of Good Housekeeping’s 2026 Bedding Awards.

How We Test

Durability
Ensuring the bedding will last is critical in our evaluations. We put products through the wringer in Lab with durability testing, including pilling tests using our Martindale abrasion tester. It rubs swatches of the same fabric together before analysts visually grade any pills formed on the material. Lab pros also conduct fabric strength and washability tests — we did 173 loads of laundry to evaluate sheet and pillow shrinkage and changes in appearance.

Performance
Our fiber scientists in the GH Institute Textiles Lab follow standardized test methods in a controlled setting to mimic how bedding will perform in real sleep conditions and address common bedding concerns. For instance, they conduct pressure resistance tests to ensure pillows will bounce back to their original shape after use each night. Other examples include evaluating a pillow's fit in a pillowcase, assessing wrinkle resistance after laundering, and conducting moisture wicking tests.

Construction
Lab analysts assess items in the Lab and review product claims and marketing points to ensure the brand isn't using misleading claims or overpromising performance. We review every product's care and fiber content labels. When testing comforters, fiber scientists grade the construction, noting any uneven spots or clumping.

At-Home Sleep Tests
We sent bedding products to over 800 at-home sleep testers across the country. Analysts matched products to testers based on screening surveys to ensure the product was a good match for testing. These testers gave feedback on comfort, support, temperature regulation, appearance, ease of set-up, and other attributes to make sure these products perform well in real-world sleep settings.

Comparative Softness
Testers come into the Textiles Lab to participate in blinded softness tests. Sheets are laid out with an identifying code, and testers feel each one to give scores for softness and whether they liked the feel without knowing the brand. Analysts group the sheets by material, so testers are comparing sheets of similar fabrication to each other.

Pro Tip:
"Bamboo bedding isn't what it sounds like! Bedding labeled as 'bamboo' is actually rayon (commonly viscose) made starting with bamboo pulp, but the plant undergoes an extensive chemical process where there is no trace of bamboo in the final material. Misleading marketing can make it sound more natural or luxurious than it is. If you want that silky-smooth feel, but made in a more sustainable process, look for Tencel lyocell."

Amanda Constantine
Home & Apparel Reviews Analyst
Amanda manages the at-home consumer testing for bedding, assigning testers to products and ensuring we receive in-depth, comprehensive feedback. She also conducted washability testing for all sheets. Amanda has undergraduate degrees in apparel merchandising and product development and advertising and marketing communications, as well as a master of science degree in consumer sciences from The Ohio State University.
Pro Tip:
"Satin bedding isn’t always made with silk. Silk is a fiber, while satin is a weave, so satin sheets aren’t necessarily made from silk and are often produced with more affordable fibers like polyester instead. Always check the fiber content label or the product description online, since items described as “silk-like” or “silky” may not contain any real silk. Genuine silk is known for its luxurious feel and natural temperature regulation."

Grace Wu
As a product analyst, Grace oversaw consumer mattress testing and personally reviewed each model. She tested sheets and pillows in the Textiles Lab following standardized durability methods, including fabric strength and pilling resistance. Grace holds a master of engineering in materials science and engineering and a bachelor of science in fiber science from Cornell University.
Pro Tip:
"The height of your mattress matters more than you might think. Think about how high you want your bed to sit, and factor in both the mattress and the bed frame. A bed that’s too low (or too high) can make it harder to get in and out comfortably, especially if you’re dealing with back pain. Keep in mind that taller mattresses may also require deep-pocket sheets."
