Fourth Wing fans, get ready to cross the parapet. You can now enter Basgiath War College—through the world of Monopoly, that is. Hasbro is releasing a Fourth Wing-themed Monopoly game this summer, and it’s perfect for romantasy fans who wish they had their own dragon (or maybe their own Xaden). And while the game releases July 15, it’s already available for preorder.
The officially licensed Empyrean game is Monopoly like you’ve never seen it before. First, the edition actually looks like a book, complete with sprayed edges. You can tell it was designed to look amazing on a bookshelf, and Fourth Wing novelist Rebecca Yarros herself worked closely on the design of the game.
Second, the gameplay is the Monopoly you love but with some major thematic changes. Here’s how it works: Players become a cadet at Basgiath and choose their dragon by selecting one of the seven metal dragon tokens to move around the board. You can bond with a Black Morningstartail like Tairn, a Golden Feathertail like Andarna, or other dragons from the series.
And instead of playing for money, cadets compete to have the most blades at the end of the game. Your banker is now your Wingleader (but it’s just as important as ever to have somebody in this position who isn’t likely to cheat!). Houses and hotels become outposts and strongholds that help protect Navarre, on properties like The Archives, The Gauntlet, and Battle Brief.
Chance and Community Chest cards are now called the Dragon Rider’s Codex and Book of Brennan. The cards are themed after events from the books, like practicing mental shields, sparring with classmates, and confessing feelings to Xaden. Keep in mind: Because of the adult nature of Fourth Wing and therefore some of the themed Monopoly cards, this edition of the game is recommended for 17+.
In a special note from Rebecca Yarros inside the box, she writes:
“As someone who grew up in a board game family, this moment is absolutely surreal. Some of my favorite memories both growing up and while raising my own kids have been playing games around the dining room table. Usually, I’m the person with the least amount of money in the end, but we all know it’s not really about winning as much as it is spending time together. Unless you’re my husband … then it’s definitely about winning.
While writing, I never imagined Fourth Wing would become what it is. It’s been beyond my wildest dreams to see it soar, to meet the readers who make the fandom the incredible place it is and to watch it take on a life of its own. What you’re holding in your hands at this very moment is the living embodiment of my awe, my joy and my gratitude. This game allows Fourth Wing to step off the page and fly into your home for what I hope will be hours of fun as you make your way around the board, snapping up Xaden’s Room and The Flight Field.
May the best Rider have the most fun.”
We think this would make a great gift for any romantasy fan who loves board games—and it’s sure to look eye-catching on a shelf. Grab a copy for yourself to help pass the time while you wait for the next Fourth Wing sequel to release!
