Testing of backup power systems in the Good Housekeeping Home Improvement & Outdoor Lab has kept pace with the uptick in extreme weather nationwide, from hurricane country to tornado alley to the rash of wildfires out west.
Our tests have included more portable power stations, which are a quiet, emissions-free alternative to traditional gas-powered generators. One of our favorites, the EcoFlow Delta Pro 3 Whole-Home Backup System, is 30% off during Amazon Prime Day. That means you can save over $1,000 on this top-tested pick.
EcoFlow is a leader in the relatively new portable power station category. (You also hear the systems referred to as “solar generators” since their batteries can be charged by the sun via solar panels.) The brand has solutions ranging from small electronics to whole-home backup systems like the Delta Pro 3.
This particular system can keep a bunch of large appliances running through an extended power outage. It can even be integrated into a home’s electrical system through EcoFlow’s smart home panel, automatically backing up electronics and systems any time the power goes out.
The Delta Pro 3’s plug-and-play capabilities include a wide array of outputs for things like lights, heaters, and appliances along with multiple USB ports for phones and other small electronics.
The only downside? Installation of the smart home panel requires a qualified electrician, and controlling the system through the EcoFlow app took some getting used to in our tests. But once it was up and running, it provided instant backup power during simulated power outages. We like that the system can be scaled up with enough additional batteries to keep an entire home running for days—through any kind of extreme weather.
