In recent months, I’ve taken a deep dive into the world of all-things-hummingbirds, and I’ve taken notice to vintage-esque feeders, nectar-filled rings, and even tiny swings the birds can perch on (yes, that’s a real thing). But throughout my searches and discoveries, I never considered what would happen to hummingbird hangouts when it rains—until now, of course.
Today, I found a feeder that comes with an umbrella-shaped dome which stops raindrops and debris (like dirt and falling leaves) from landing on the unit. Apparently, this can help prevent the nectar from being diluted and littered, creating an all-around cleaner experience for tiny winged visitors.
It’s comparable to the large umbrella that sits over your patio dining table (I’ve definitely shared meals outside during the rain with the help of a protective cover overhead—and now hummingbirds can, too).
The umbrella isn’t the only standout feature, though. The structure itself is easy to fill with nectar; all you need to do is lift the red covering and pour it in. The round lid offers 360-degree seating for the birds, and it’s designed with a middle moat you can fill with water to help prevent ants from getting into the food. Not to mention, the unit is made with weather-resistant material, according to the brand.
And although this hummingbird feeder comes with its own umbrella, you can buy protective domes for your existing feeders separately. For instance, this cover is shaped like a bright flower, which can even help attract hummingbirds to your yard.
Whether you’re buying an entirely new unit or adding vibrant coverage to one that’s already set up in your backyard, I’m sure the hummingbirds who visit will be thrilled the next time it rains.
