Ever since I bought my dad a smart bird feeder with a built-in camera, my entire family has gotten a kick out of the adorable selfies taken of our feathered visitors. We’ve seen up-close snaps of curious cardinals, bold blue jays, and more—but hungry hummingbirds never make an appearance (sigh). While most backyard birds are attracted to grains and seeds, hummingbirds are drawn to sugar water and nectar—which explains why they haven’t stopped by our bird feeder.
Enter Bird Buddy’s smart hummingbird feeder. It’s a snacking spot designed for hummingbirds only—and the built-in camera lets you see live videos and high-resolution photos of each visitor who stops by for a snack.
More specifically, the camera is solar-powered and can capture 5-megapixel photos and 2K videos (you can even opt for slow-motion footage).
After downloading the Bird Buddy app, you’ll get live notifications whenever a hummingbird stops by—and with a subscription, you’ll be able to use a majority of the AI features (like bird recognition, bird care alerts, and my personal favorite, a “name that bird” function that allows you to name a hummingbird that visits often). Plus, if you have a pet in the yard, the smart camera will send you a notification signifying that another animal is present.
The coolest part? This feeder can connect to Alexa, so feel free to ask about all the the hummingbirds who stop by for some nectar.
According to Bird Buddy, The Smart Solar Pro comes has a UV-resistant build as well as a weatherproof design. And while we haven’t tried this hummingbird feeder specifically, our team took the brand’s standard bird feeder for a backyard spin.
In fact, the original Bird Buddy was named best overall smart bird feeder by the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Improvement Lab. Our team was impressed by the high-definition photos it captured, its livestream capabilities, and of course, its AI functions.
If the hummingbird feeder is anything like the original, I can assume it’s just as impressive. Get ready for some entertaining hummingbird selfies.
