Though Halloween might be 88 days away—not like we’re counting or anything—IKEA is already getting a head start on the frightful fun. The Swedish retailer just dropped its collection of seasonal throw pillows, dinnerware, and decorations, but everyone’s trying to get their hands on its new ghost lamp (and, no, not for the reasons you think).
Sure, this pared-back, battery-operated table lamp is adorable. As the lighting equivalent to Casper the Friendly Ghost, the fixture will bring a little sweetness to even the spookiest setup. It has two light settings—purple and white—along with a timer that you can set for 30 minutes or eight hours.
But the real reason it’s going viral is a (seemingly) innocent mistake. You see, IKEA placed these lamps in boxes that are too small, so the arms stick out. In fact, if you look quickly, it’s almost as if this glowing ghost is busting out of solitary confinement and ready to wreak havoc on your home.
However, when you finally let it out of its box, its friendly demeanor makes the whole setup, well, hilarious.
Was it a packing faux pas or an intentionally whimsical detail? Honestly, it’s hard to say. Shoppers have been posting this boo-tiful box all over social media, but IKEA hasn’t acknowledged the quirky packaging. (There’s always a chance the brand is in on the joke.)
Although the store just dropped its Halloween collection, we have a feeling this ghost lamp will fly off the shelves like a witch on her broomstick. If you like the look of IKEA’s frightful light fixture—but can’t manage to get your hands on the original—here are a few Amazon dupes worth adding to your cart.
