Throughout my years covering parenting, with a focus on toys, I've seen trends come and go. (And I've seen them come back around again—hello, Furbys and Tamagotchis!) One year, everyone wants color-changing toys, the next year, they want light-up toys. Slime is in, then slime is out. But one thing seems to remain the same, year after year: Kids ages 3 and up love Magna-Tiles.

So when people ask me what toys are worth shopping on Amazon Prime Big Deals Day, I always send them straight to the Magna-Tiles page and the LEGO deals page. My feeling about both building/construction sets is this: You're probably going to end up buying some in the near future anyway—for a birthday party, for rainy day boredom-busters, for early holiday shopping—so you might as well get them when they're on sale.

Let’s get one thing out of the way: Sadly, the popular Magna-Tiles advent calendar isn’t on sale. It’s still a good buy, though, and it’s better to get it now while you still can. (Trust me, advent calendars sell out sooner than you think.)

There is, however, a discount on one of our favorite toys of the year—the Magna-Tiles Coral Reef play set—so you can stock up on other deals while you’re buying the calendar. The Coral Reef set won a Good Housekeeping 2026 Best Toy Award, and testers loved the octopus figure with the squishy legs, along with sending animals down the ramp. “[My daughter] really loved all of the animal toys,” one parent said. “For a kid who really loves ‘Baby Shark,’ this is a hit. She also really likes playing with the slide pieces—she'll even connect them to each other and then take two of the animals to ‘race’ each other up and down.”

Another hot Magna-Tiles item that’s currently on sale is the microMAGS 70-Piece Deluxe Magnetic Construction Set. Parents love these because the smaller pieces mean they’re easier to take on the go—which is one of the huge bonuses to Magna-Tiles in general. And with this set, there are a lot of little pieces for the buck.

Let's face it: Magna-Tiles are pricey. A lot of the better magnetic building sets are, but that doesn't make it easier on the budget-conscious. Kids who are big fans can put a huge dent in the wallet every birthday and holiday just with a few sets. And, sure, there are less expensive dupes floating around out there. But in my time covering toys, I'd say Magna-Tiles are worth shelling out for the real thing.

Why? Other, no-name-brand sets might not be compatible in size with Magna-Tiles, which can be frustrating for kids. More importantly, it's better to err on the safe side when it comes to magnetic toys, because if the magnets come out, they can be a hazard. (A new safety standard for magnetic toys, including desk toys and fidget toys with high-powered magnets, went into effect in 2022, and it's good to stick with brands that are sure to follow the guidelines. The magnets in Magna-Tiles are covered, so little fingers won't pry them out.)

And when I went to play with a friend's preschool son recently, his Magna-Tiles dupes just didn't work well. My houses were crooked. My towers fell over. He actually liked that part, but my vision as an architect was compromised. It's possible that, for his third birthday, I'll get him some of the real thing.
