My perfumes have certainly caused a fair share of polite throat clears, something any fragrance lover can probably relate to. Over time, though, I’ve come to appreciate the quiet confidence of solid perfumes that release their notes gradually and linger closer to the body. But that subtlety doesn’t necessarily mean they lack impact; worn this way, fragrance feels more personal and inviting rather than attention-seeking.

Our top picks:

Best Citrus: TOCCA Laila Solid Perfume

Best Feminine: Dior Miss Dior Mini Miss Blooming Bouquet Solid Perfume

Best Avante-Garde: Heretic Parfum 'Til Death

Best Unisex: Glossier You Perfume Solid

Blended with waxes and oils and packaged in small tins or sticks, solid fragrances are easy to carry and apply discreetly whenever a quick emotional lift is needed.
Dabbed onto the wrists, collarbone, or behind the ears, they provide a restrained trace, making them especially well-suited for offices or crowded spaces where stronger sprays might feel overwhelming. Their format also invites scent layering and experimentation, making it easy to build a more personal and versatile fragrance wardrobe.

Our Good Housekeeping beauty team, which is made up of scientists and editors, sees a steady parade of perfumes in every format imaginable, from luxury launches to drugstore classics, brand-new scents to long-time staples. Considering that we collectively sniff our way through countless fragrances each year, noting which scents occupy prime real estate on my colleagues’ desks is a solid (pun intended) place to start. That’s why I also asked them to share the fragrances they’re reaching for right now, which you’ll find below.

Fragrance may be deeply personal, but I think recommendations never hurt when you’re on the hunt for a new favorite.

Laila perfume blends the tart brightness of green mandarin with the cozy warmth of amber and vanilla, creating a scent that’s both captivating and easy to love. It feels youthful and romantic, yet grounding. The embossed round compact comes with a delicate pouch that nods to the heritage elegance Tocca is known for.

Expert's Take: "Leila is a bright, citrusy scent with a comforting vanilla facet. It’s very feminine and smells youthful without feeling childish. The solid perfume has the perfect intensity, and applying it during the day is a great pick-me-up." — Chiara Butler, Beauty & Personal Care Lab Reviews Analyst

Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet is a fresh floral centered on peony and Damascus rose, softened by white musk. Bright Sicilian mandarin and bergamot open the scent, while subtle hints of apricot and peach add a gentle fruity sweetness. It leaves a graceful, poised impression without ever seeming uptight. Crafted with rose wax, the pink gel is housed in a couture-inspired lipstick-type case for easy on-the-go application.

Expert's Take: "This is a unique gel stick that twists up like a lip balm and you can swipe directly on skin without dipping your fingers in like traditional solid perfume compacts. I love that you can discreetly apply it anywhere and it doesn’t leave any residue. While I don’t usually love floral fragrances, this has a hint of freshness and isn’t overpowering." — April Franzino, Senior Beauty & Style Director

Inspired by Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, The Bride!, starring Jessie Buckley, 'Til Death explores themes of love, individuality, and autonomy through a blend of resinous, earthy notes and exotic florals. Most intriguing and daring in my opinion, hands down.

Expert's Take: "As if the mirrored compact isn’t enough to grab your attention, the intriguing scent of gothic romanticism surely will too. A twist on the typical floral, it melds traditional notes like jasmine sambar and rose with cedar, frankincense, and musk for an earthy, grounded scent that’s beautifully unique." — Celia Shatzman, Temporary Beauty Editor

I’m not sure what I love more: the playful packaging, the bouncy texture that glides on effortlessly, or the energetic, long-lasting fruity-floral notes that make me want to step away from the Lab (like right now!) and eat lunch in the park.

Expert's Take: "Are you ready for this jelly? The bouncy jelly texture makes this a blast to apply every time, and has a slight cooling effect. The effervescent fragrance is fun and light too, combining Brazilian jasmine, pink dragonfruit, and ocean air for a pretty floral that screams spring." — Celia Shatzman

A small indent on the lid lets you open this compact one-handed, even if you’re mid–coffee sip. The packaging has a satisfying weight and sits comfortably in the hand. Sometimes I just like to hold it and use it as a fidget, but I still find the woody, creamy scent most comforting and calming.

Expert's Take: "Practically a modern-day classic, I can never get enough of this warm and cozy skin scent spotlighting pink pepper, iris, and ambrox, and thanks to the chic and sleek metal compact, I can reapply it whenever I want. The solid format has a wax base, so it melts right into skim." — Celia Shatzman

Bright raspberry and pink pepper bring a lively spark, balanced by soft florals of bluebonnet, freesia, and rose. I don’t quite detect the musk outright, but I feel its cozy warmth in the background. It’s the kind of scent that makes you pause for a moment and take a deep breath.

My Take: Lady Bird earned prime real estate on my desk (and my bag). I find it uplifting and celebratory, but in a practical, levelheaded way; the kind of fragrance that quietly lifts your mood. Every note feels perfectly placed, and if I didn’t know better, I might think no human hand was involved in crafting it.

The fragrance comes with a chain so it can be attached to a bag. Soft florals and strawberry sweetness give it a young, flirty feel. It has a playful, slightly cheeky vibe that makes it especially fun to wear, whether on the skin or as a bag charm.

Experts' Take: "This solid perfume doubles as a cute, on-trend bag charm—I actually have it on my bag right now. Despite the strawberry cake's look, it comes in Cream Gardenia and Lychee Bouquet scents. I have the Cream Gardenia version, and it’s a very light floral that never feels overpowering." — Chiara Butler

Easy to apply and long-lasting, Only Human opens with the fresh sparkle of pink pepper and bright Italian bergamot, followed by clean, airy notes of waterlily and bamboo, before settling into a warm, smooth finish of vanilla bean, ambroxan, and cedarwood.

My Take: It certainly evokes rich, creamy, almost edible notes, but not in an overly sweet way. It lingers softly, like the craving for one more bite of something delicious. Nutty and indulgent, it’s the kind of scent that leaves you torn between savoring the moment and wanting more.

What is a solid perfume?

linebreak

Unlike traditional sprays, solid perfumes blend volatile fragrance components with waxes and oils to create a balm-like texture that melts into your skin's warmth and releases scent. Beeswax, plant, or synthetic waxes give them structure, though some brands are now offering gel formulas, some even with a hint of shimmer to make them look as pretty as they smell.

While they often feature the same fragrance notes as their bottled counterparts, the formula can change how their notes unfold. In liquid perfumes, alcohol lifts fragrance molecules into the air, creating bright, immediate top notes. In solid formulas, the scent diffuses more slowly through the dense chemical structure of waxes and gels, usually softening the opening burst and allowing the heart and base notes to emerge sooner and for longer, resulting in a more skin-close fragrance experience.

Who should try a solid perfume?

linebreak

Thanks to their small tins and compact tubes, solid perfumes slip easily into a bag or pocket, and some even clip onto a purse for quick touch-ups throughout the day. Their portability makes them ideal for frequent travelers and gym-goers, while their understated scent may best suit minimalists and professionals in spaces where strong fragrance isn’t ideal, such as doctors’ offices or classrooms.

They’re also a favorite among fragrance enthusiasts who enjoy experimenting with scent layering. Because the fragrance stays close to the skin, multiple solids can be mixed, matched, and applied to different pulse points without clashing or overwhelming, making it easy to test and build your own fragrance wardrobe.

Another bonus: Many solid perfumes come in refillable or low-waste packaging, adding a sustainability element.
