Apple’s AirPods (especially the AirPods Pro 3) are some of the best earbuds we’ve tested in the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Tech & Engineering Lab (you can read our full thoughts in our dedicated review)—but they’re not for everyone. At $249 for a pair, they aren’t exactly cheap, and if you’re not an Apple user they’ll be missing some of the best functionality that makes them stand out.

So, what’re the alternatives? Luckily, the Tech & Engineering Lab has tested dozens of headphones to find the best ones, and anyone looking for other options has a plethora to choose from. After scouring the marketplace, reviewing our latest test data, and comparing design and features, these are the best alternatives to AirPods.

Best Overall AirPods Alternative

Skullcandy Method 540 ANC

Pros

  • Great sound quality
  • Advanced customization via the app
  • Long battery life
  • Competitive price

Cons

  • Case is a bit larger
  • ANC could be stronger

Skullcandy’s Method 540 ANC earbuds were our favorite in-ear headphones we’ve tested in recent years. They’ve got superb sound quality thanks to tuning from Bose, a stylish (albeit a little large) carrying case that can clip onto your bag or belt loop, and impressive functionality via their companion app. They did fantastic in our Lab tests frequency response, performing far better than their $150 price tag would suggest, though we wish the ANC was a bit more powerful.

In the app, you can customize the level of ANC, the EQ, and even set up the buds to take a photo with your phone’s camera hands-free. Their 32 hours of battery life with ANC on beats out the AirPods Pro 3’s 24 hours. Coming in a variety of colors and designs, these are our top contender for an alternative to AirPods.

Nothing Ear (3a)

Pros

  • Strong Lab performance
  • Great value
  • High level of customization

Cons

  • Default sound can be too dark for some listeners

What first caught my attention was Nothing's iconic design, which I frequently spot around Brooklyn. Style aside, these earbuds are worth considering for their impressive performance, all under $100. The Nothing Ear (a) offers a combination of effective ANC, multipoint connectivity, and a lightweight design that punches above its price point. It offers many of the features shoppers expect from higher-end earbuds, like advanced customization, at a fraction of the cost.

Our Lab test showed that these had good sound quality and ANC, though the house Nothing sound can be a bit dark. Luckily, Nothing’s fantastic companion app lets you dial in precise sound settings with its eight band parametric EQ, and you can even share your EQ settings with other users.

Best AirPods Alternative for Samsung Users

Samsung Galaxy Buds4 Pro

Pros

  • Seamless pairing with Samsung devices
  • EQ sliders let you dial in sound exactly how you like
  • Great sound quality

Cons

  • Some features are Samsung exclusive

There's no denying that the new Galaxy Buds 4 Pro are a top pick for Samsung phone users. I’ve paired them with my Galaxy Z Fold 8 and found the experience as seamless as when I’ve used AirPods with an iPhone. They're packed with features like adaptive active noise cancellation, high-resolution audio support, and deep integration with Galaxy devices. A redesigned fit makes them more comfortable for extended wear, while Galaxy AI features such as live translation and hands-free assistance help them stand out from the competition.

In our Lab tests we found that they provide grate sound quality, albeit with a boost in the upper-mid frequencies that some listeners may not like. This can be fixed with the impressive multi-band EQ settings that let you fine tune the sound—though you can only use it on Galaxy devices. If you’ve got one of the newer Samsung Galaxy phones, these are a fantastic AirPods alternative.

How we test the best AirPod alternatives

How We Test Headphones

The Good Housekeeping Institute Tech & Engineering Lab has spent hundreds of hours evaluating wireless earbuds, including AirPods alternatives from brands like Sony, Bose, Samsung, Beats, and more. To identify the top performers, our experts assess every aspect of the listening experience, from sound quality and active noise cancellation to comfort, battery life, and ease of use.

For this roundup, our analysts logged more than 300 hours of listening time across a wide range of models. During testing, we evaluate key performance factors including audio quality, microphone clarity, noise-canceling effectiveness, connectivity, and how securely earbuds stay in place during everyday activities. We also assess comfort by considering fit, weight, portability, and long-term wearability. To assess durability, we review each model's build quality, water- and sweat-resistance rating (IP rating), and overall resilience to everyday wear and tear. Additional features such as multipoint connectivity, wireless charging, companion apps, voice assistant compatibility, and customizable controls are also taken into account.

Whenever possible, we incorporate feedback from consumer testers to gain additional insight into real-world performance, comfort, and design preferences. Our final recommendations are based on a combination of rigorous Lab testing, hands-on evaluations, and continued hands-on evaluations of newer and updated models to ensure our picks reflect the best AirPods alternatives available today.

What to look for when shopping for earbuds

How We Test Headphones

✔️ Pairing and compatibility: The best wireless earbuds should pair quickly and maintain a reliable Bluetooth connection. Before you buy, make sure the earbuds are compatible with your smartphone's operating system and check whether they offer platform-specific features for Apple or Android users.

✔️ Noise cancellation: If you frequently take calls, commute, travel, or work in noisy environments, look for earbuds with active noise cancellation (ANC). ANC technology helps reduce unwanted background sounds so you can focus on your music, podcasts, or conversations with fewer distractions.

✔️ Water resistance: Planning to wear your earbuds during workouts or outdoor activities? Choose a pair with a water-resistance rating of at least IPX4 if you plan to wear your earbuds during workouts or outdoor activities, which can withstand sweat and light splashes. Higher IP ratings offer increased protection against water and dust.

✔️ Fit and ear tips: A secure, comfortable fit is essential for both sound quality and long-term wear. Ear tips that are too large, too small, or improperly shaped won't create a proper seal, which can negatively affect audio performance, noise cancellation, and overall comfort. Many models include multiple ear tip sizes to help you find the best fit.

✔️ Battery life: Most wireless earbuds offer around eight hours of listening time on a single charge, though actual performance can vary depending on volume levels, noise-canceling settings, and other features. Keep in mind that some brands advertise total battery life, which includes additional charges provided by the charging case.

✔️ Controls and features: Premium earbuds often include onboard touch controls or physical buttons that allow you to adjust volume, skip tracks, answer calls, and activate a voice assistant without reaching for your phone. Some models also offer companion apps with customizable EQ settings and additional features.

✔️ Charging case: Most AirPods alternatives include a charging case that stores and recharges the earbuds when not in use. If portability is important, look for a compact, durable case with features like wireless charging or fast charging support.
