I’ve tried every type of AirPods, and I love how seamlessly they connect to my iPhone and Apple devices. While I never leave the house without the Apple AirPods Pro 3, the other headphones and earbuds from the brand have their perks as well. So, after trying them out myself and testing them alongside our audio experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Tech & Engineering Lab, I rounded up the best picks from Apple.
Our top picks:
✔️ Best overall: Apple AirPods Pro 3
Provides clear sound, strong noise cancellation, a comfortable fit, and improved battery life from previous iterations.
✔️ Best value: Apple AirPods (3rd Generation)
A budget-friendly option with crisp sound, wireless charging, and a water-resistant design.
✔️ Best for an open fit: Apple AirPods 4
Powered by the H2 chip in the Pro earbuds, this lightweight design is offered at a great value.
✔️ Most versatile: Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Generation)
Features noise cancellation and comfortable adjustable silicone tips.
✔️ Best noise canceling: Apple AirPods Max 2
Stylish, over-ear headphones with excellent noise cancellation, comfort, and sound quality.
Not only do I love Apple’s earbuds for their super sleek, pocket-friendly design, but their sound quality is some of the best I've found. AirPods also come with exceptional battery life, so I rarely have to charge them, and the newer models are some of the best noise-cancelling headphones I’ve tried, so I can drown out background noise when I want to.

Pros
Fantastic noise cancellation
High-quality sound
Improved battery life
Comfortable, secure fit
Includes five ear tips, including XXS
Water- and sweat-resistant
Cons
Charging cable not included
The AirPods Pro 3 are one of Apple’s latest AirPods, and they’re my absolute favorite. They feature several improvements that make them even more impressive than the AirPods Pro 2. You can expect crystal-clear, pristine sound quality, as well as better active noise cancellation. I tried both the AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Pro 2 on a plane recently, and the difference was impossible to overlook. If you’re serious about tuning out external noise like office chatter or a noisy subway, then the AirPods Pro 3 are the best in-ear AirPods for it.
The latest AirPods also have a slightly different design, which sits more comfortably and securely in your ear. They’ve given me less ear fatigue than older generations, and I like that they come with five ear tips to choose from (including XXS). I also appreciate that the AirPods Pro 3 have improved water and sweat resistance, so you can freely take them along with you on rainy runs or sweaty gym sessions, and they now feature up to eight hours of battery life on a single charge, versus six hours with the Apple AirPods Pro 2. I just wish they came with a charging cable, but you can use a USB-C cord that you already own.
One other feature exclusive to the new AirPods Pro 3 is heart rate sensing during workouts, thanks to tiny sensors built inside the earbuds. That means even if you don’t own an Apple Watch, you can still keep track of your heart rate and calories burned when using the Fitness app. I tested this out myself recently on an outdoor walk, and it worked seamlessly.

Pros
Improved audio quality over 2nd generation AirPods
Supports wireless charging
Water- and sweat-resistant
Cons
Prone to falling out of some ears
I like this older generation of AirPods for their improved audio quality over the previous generation. Because they're semi-open, they won't isolate sound as effectively as AirPods Pro or over-ear headphones, but they do let you stay aware of your surroundings by letting some ambient sound in. Just keep in mind that they don't feature active noise cancellation.
When streaming music, our audio experts found the sound to be crisp and clear with rich bass. “The sound quality of Apple's earbuds is unmatched to me,” said Good Housekeeping Institute Audiophile and Data and Product Operations Manager Nik Greenwald. “They're one of the most popular earbuds and for good reason. They have a really smooth frequency response that just sounds good. I also love the case and how easy they are to set up.”
That said, if you already own a pair of 2nd-generation AirPods, I don’t necessarily recommend upgrading to this generation unless you want extra features like spatial audio that creates an immersive 3D effect, improved battery life (up from 5 hours to 6 hours of listening and an extra 6 hours with the charging case), and the option of wireless charging.
Another feature these have over the AirPods 2 is their IPX4 rating, meaning they're both sweat- and water-resistant and ultimately more workout-friendly headphones. Some testers claimed, however, that they don’t stay put in ears as well as other AirPods: “The shape is my biggest gripe,” Greenwald said. “This generation has a different shape than the older one, which doesn't quite fit my ear perfectly and makes them far more apt to fall out of my ears while in use.” If you want the most secure fit, our pros suggest spending more on the AirPods Pro 3, which feature five silicone tips in addition to active noise cancellation.
| Type | Open-ear |
| Battery life | 6 hours (30 with charging case) |
| Water resistant | Yes, IPX4 |
| Noise canceling | No |

Pros
Great value
Optional noise cancellation
Powered by H2 chip
Decent battery life
Cons
Not as comfortable or secure as AirPods with silicone tips
You can expect similar sound quality with the AirPods 4 that you’ll get with other Apple AirPods, though the experience is slightly different due to the unsealed fit. They’re powered by the H2 chip you’ll find in Pro versions, and what’s great about them is that they come at a lower price. You can choose between two versions: AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, or to save a bit, AirPods 4 (without Active Noise Cancellation).
I tested the Noise Cancellation model on a recent flight and was impressed by how effectively the earbuds blocked out the drone of the plane. Though you won’t get as secure or comfy a fit as you would with AirPods that have silicone tips, these are still an excellent choice for everyday wear.
Battery life is slightly lower than Pro models at five hours on a single charge, but you get a massive 30 hours when combined with the charging case. Just note that the AirPods 4 without Active Noise Cancellation do not feature wireless charging or modes like Adaptive Audio, which adjusts audio to your environment, or Transparency mode, which lets you hear your surroundings even with your earbuds in your ears.
Features at a Glance
| Type | Open-ear |
| Battery life | 5 hours (30 hours with charging case) |
| Water resistant | Yes, IP54 |
| Noise canceling | Optional |

Pros
Excellent noise canceling
Great sound quality
Adjustable ear tips
Supports wireless charging and USB-C
Water-, sweat-, and dust-resistant
Cons
Pricey
Fit is not perfect for everyone
The AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) with USB-C charging took the original AirPods to the next level by adding noise-canceling capabilities that make it easier than ever to take a call hands-free on a noisy street. Because the AirPods Pro 2 are designed to seal off the ear canal with silicone tips, they’re not only more comfortable than traditional AirPods, but they also offer a more secure fit that stays put better when you’re on the go.
This makes it much easier to find the right size for your ear, a common problem among earbud users. This second-generation model also has improved audio quality with rich clarity and depth as well as overall performance, thanks to Apple’s H2 chip.
According to Apple, noise canceling is twice as powerful as in the previous generation, and in our audio tests, the AirPods Pro 2's noise canceling capabilities were comparable to some over-ear headphones, which are typically better at isolating out background noise. Greenwald described these as “impressive for earbuds” with a “frequency response curve that’s so well balanced in the bass range and has very little distortion.” To say the least, this pair features some of the best audio quality you’ll get from AirPods and the most popular AirPods alternatives.
When testing the AirPods Pro 2nd Generation, our experts were impressed by how effectively busy New York City street sounds were blocked out on public transportation and how easy it was to switch to transparency mode whenever needed, simply by pressing the AirPods' stem. Apple also recently added a feature called “Conversation Awareness”—once you start speaking, your audio’s volume automatically reduces along with any background noise so you can seamlessly transition to a conversation.
But one thing that you may want to be aware of is that callers on the other end might hear ambient sounds like traffic and wind that the earbuds pick up. Still, our reviewers were fans of these. “Listening to music in spatial audio is such a beautiful experience and I find that I notice notes in the background of music that I had not noticed before because of the clarity of the sound,” one tester said. Testers did note, however, that while these AirPods are a great choice for commuting and working out, they still may fall out of ears occasionally and aren’t always a perfect fit despite the silicone tips.
| Type | In-ear |
| Battery life | 6 hours (30 hours with charging case) |
| Water resistant | Yes, IP54 rating |
| Noise canceling | Yes |

Pros
Excellent noise canceling
Comfortable and attractive design
Offered in a variety of sleek colors
Superb sound quality
Cons
Case doesn’t fully protect headphones
Wired cable not included
The all-new AirPods Max 2 took the original AirPods Max and made several improvements. These over-ear headphones continue to stand out for their superior sound quality and excellent noise cancellation capabilities, which are now 1.5x more effective, according to Apple. If you plan on traveling on noisy airplanes or subways, this is the pair for you—especially in comparison to other AirPods. Though they’re pricey for what they are, it’s hard to find over-ear headphones with a sleeker-looking design (plus, they’re available in five gorgeous metallic shades). Keep an eye out for flash sales and deals as the holidays approach so you can snag them when they’re marked down.
With only two controls, the AirPods Max 2 are extremely intuitive and simple to use. Just turn the dial to adjust the volume and press the button to alternate between noise canceling and transparency mode when you want to speak to someone or hear your surroundings. Our experts were blown away by how clearly they could hear their own voices when testing transparency mode, and we found audio quality to be crisp, clear, and exceptional at high frequencies. The AirPods Max remained comfortable during hours of use, thanks to plush ear pads and a breathable mesh band, though some testers reported that they feel heavier than other over-ear headphones.
There’s really not much to dislike about Apple’s over-ear headphones, and I appreciate that new features were added, like conversation awareness, voice isolation, live translation, and adaptive audio. I do wish that Apple had upgraded the smart case to something sturdier and better suited for travel. Also noteable: A wired cable is still not included, so you can't connect to in-flight entertainment systems without purchasing a USB-C to 3.5mm Audio Cable separately.

How we test the best Apple AirPods

The experts and engineers at the Good Housekeeping Institute Tech and Engineering Lab have been testing earbuds, headphones, and AirPods for more than a decade and have logged over 300 hours of listening time in the past five years. In our most recent evaluations, more than 20 pairs of headphones and earbuds were tested.

When testing headphones and earbuds, our engineers and product analysts first assess each pair's ease of use and setup. We evaluate how quickly the AirPods pair to devices, as well as how intuitive the controls are when listening to music, podcasts, and more. We check if it’s easy to adjust volume, turn noise cancellation on or off, and skip tracks.
When wearing the AirPods in the Tech Lab and in daily life, we also take note of how comfortable the AirPods feel while wearing them. We evaluate whether the AirPods fit comfortably in the ear (or on the head, for over-ear headphones) and how well they stay in-ear.
Our engineers evaluate sound quality, noise-canceling capabilities, and, when applicable, audio spectrum performance. Our engineers test each pair using the miniDSP EARS to plot the sound profile of each set. We evaluate active noise cancellation by playing back uniform sounds and seeing at what level we can no longer perceive them.
Before making our final top picks, we consider features like the AirPods' battery life, charging time, and water resistance.
We also consider feedback from consumer testers, who provide real-world feedback on the comfort, sound quality, noise cancellation, and fit of the AirPods.
What to look for when shopping for the best AirPods

✔️ Noise cancelation: One of the key differentiators among AirPods is whether or not they offer noise cancelation, a feature that helps block out background noise like the hum of a plane or office chatter. Active noise cancelation is based on tech that helps cancel out outside sounds, while passive noise cancelation relies on the physical product sealing off your ear. If you're looking for active noise cancelation that you can turn on and off (like when you want to let sound in to have an in-person conversation or not hear anything but your own audio), opt for AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4, or the AirPods Max 2.
✔️ Comfort and fit: Not all AirPods fit exactly the same way. AirPods 4 and below are open-ear models that easily slide into your ears but can just as easily fall out. Meanwhile, AirPods Pro feature adjustable silicone tips for a more secure fit. Over-ear headphones like the AirPods Max 2 are typically the most comfortable as they feature robust cushioning, but they're also much bulkier and heavier to transport than a tiny AirPods case.
✔️ Battery life and charging: Double-check the battery life of your AirPods before purchasing if you're someone who tends to forget to charge devices. While most models featured above offer similar listening times, you can add on a few extra hours depending on your charging case (in general, newer generations will offer more battery power on a single charge). If you're looking for wireless charging, make sure to get a model that supports this feature. Most of the latest AirPods are able to be charged with USB-C, which can be extremely helpful if you're hoping to cut down on the number of cables you have by your nightstand.
✔️ Water resistance: Most latest generations of Apple AirPods are now water- and sweat-resistant, though there are exceptions like the AirPods Max. If you plan on working out with your AirPods at the gym or running in the rain, you should choose a water-resistant model that's at least IPX4-rated to be safe. IP (ingress protection) rating indicates to what degree a product can sustain water exposure or submersion in addition to contact with other elements like dirt, sand, etc. The first number refers to solids, while the second number refers to liquids; an X means there's no data regarding the criterion. As a rule of thumb, the higher the number, the more protection you can expect. The latest Apple AirPods Pro 3 feature an IP57 rating, meaning that they're more resistant to solids and water than any other AirPods featured above.
