Matthew Gray Gubler is set to star in the new CBS series Einstein, premiering in winter 2027.

The Criminal Minds alum spoke out for the first time about his new TV role when appearing at the 2026 CBS Fest in Los Angeles on April 15.

Matthew’s co-star, Brooklyn Nine-Nine actress Melissa Fumero, also teased Einstein and the two’s dynamic on the show.

Matthew Gray Gubler is coming back to TV very soon—and he’s opening up about his new role for the first time.

It’s been a while since the actor has steadily appeared on the small screen, and fans were hoping for more when he made a cameo on Criminal Minds: Evolution in May 2025. Now, Matthew has confirmed a new CBS series, Einstein.

Although Einstein isn’t set to air until the winter of 2027, CBS had Matthew and his co-star, Brooklyn Nine-Nine alum Melissa Fumero, preview the show at the network’s annual CBS Fest on April 15. And when TV Insider caught up with Matthew at the event, the actor shared his excitement about the brand-new project.

“[The dynamic] magical. Sensational and magical. Spectacular, marvelous, incredible,” he told the outlet, highlighting his on-screen chemistry with Melissa in Einstein. “We’re having a wonderful time together, and we’ve only been shooting for 11 days, but it feels like 11 years in the best way.”

But that’s not all Matthew teased about Einstein.

Matthew added that fans can expect the show to feel different from Criminal Minds, despite both shows featuring a team solving criminal cases. And, as he noted, there’s one key difference folks need to pay attention to.

“[Einstein is] a comedy, so I look at it like trees,” he said before making a joke. “Trees are all trees, but there’s pine trees, and there’s palm trees. I feel like this is more of a palm tree … What a strange thing to say to someone.”

Einstein follows Lewis Einstein, the fictional great-grandson of Albert Einstein, as he spends his time as a brilliant yet directionless college professor. When his antics eventually get him in trouble with the police, he is forced to work with local detective Teri London as she attempts to solve some confusing cases.

Matthew plays the titular role, while Melissa stars as Teri.

Melissa is also thrilled about their on-screen dynamic.

“We clicked right away, and I knew pretty much from the chemistry read that I was like, ‘Oh yeah. I would have fun working with this person and spending long days with them,’” Melissa told Deadline in a TikTok clip. “So, it’s just been an awesome experience, and I feel so lucky.”

After all of this intel, we definitely have to mark our calendars for this!
