On September 22, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS)announced that Star Meat Delivery, Inc. of Lucama, NC, is recalling approximately 167,639 pounds of raw pork, beef, and goat products. The reason for the recall is that these products were produced without federal inspection, but were labeled with a false USDA mark of inspection (also called an establishment mark). The meat products were distributed nationwide for purchase by consumers, as well as to restaurants and retailers.
The FSIS has classified this as a Class I recall, the agency's most serious recall category. A Class I recall means that if you consume a product included within it, there’s a reasonable probability that you could suffer serious medical consequences. This is because any food produced without inspection could contain undeclared allergens, harmful bacteria, or other contaminants, according to the FSIS.
The lack of inspection was discovered during surveillance by the FSIS. Fortunately, no illness or injury connected to eating any of the recalled meat products has been reported so far.

The FSIS reports that the products were distributed in bulk under the A&D Foods label. The false establishment mark on the product packaging reads “EST. 1363.” Consumers should know that individual retail packages may not display the A&D Foods bulk label (above), since stores may have their own labels.
