Once a relic of the past, wallpaper is now enjoying a modern-day revival thanks to an influx of maximalism and self-expression. In fact, according to a new survey from Thumbtack, 61% of homeowners said they'd consider incorporating at least one type of pattern into their homes within the next year.
From subtle stripes to full-on murals, choices abound. But the survey found a clear winner for the most popular pattern people are embracing.
Today’s Most Popular Wallpaper Pattern
The trending wallpaper pattern homeowners are most drawn to right now is floral and botanical motifs. Thumbtack's survey says 34% would pick it over others, with mixed or layered patterns coming in at number two with 24% and stripes, checks, or plaids landing at number three with 22% of the vote.
Neha Gupta, interior designer and founder of NU Curations, says she’s not surprised. She shares that along with infusing elements of nature into a space, they’re easily scaled up or down depending on the color and size of the pattern.
Large or colorful patterns deliver drama, while smaller patterns—like a delicate vine or small florals—add subtle texture. They’re also versatile, ushering in organic energy from the kids’ room to kitchen to home office.
How to Use Floral Wallpaper in Your Home
Consider these designer-approved ways to incorporate floral wallpaper into your home.
Statement Powder Room
Gupta says she loves experimenting with bold wallpaper in a powder room because it instantly creates glamour. “Adding a beautiful mirror, a few warm metal finish accessories, and some thoughtful lighting will create a ‘jewel box’ that makes your powder room feel bigger,” she says.
Cozy Bedroom
Floral wallpaper can also cultivate an intimate and welcoming bedroom. Gupta says, “I love the concept of placing a soft botanical-style wallpaper at the back of the bed and then combining it with some texture on the bedding and furniture, and also adding some warmth through lighting.”
Small Details
If wallpaper drenching, or even a statement wall, feels like too much, you can still get in on the floral wallpaper trend. “These prints can add beauty when placed inside a bookcase, behind a display case, or even in a recessed element in the walls,” Gupta says.
