My cousin had both a cat and a dog with white fur, and a black couch. Suffice to say, she needed a sofa cover. Most couch protectors cost the same or less than a regular blanket, but the difference is they are machine-washable and durable against pet claws. Some have straps to hold the cover in place while your dog circles before bedding down. Some are even waterproof, in case you have a young puppy or a senior who needs it.

Our top picks:

I chose these couch covers based on recommendations from friends and family with dogs and cats, including my cousin and some dog-owning product analysts in the Good Housekeeping Institute.

Sofa Shield

$28AmazonAlso Consider
Credit: Sofa Shield

Pros

  • Ideal for heavy shedders
  • Covers seat, backrest, and arms
  • Straps help hold it in place
  • Many sizes, including pieces for a sectional or recliner
  • More than a dozen colors and prints

Cons

  • A rambunctious dog might cause it to slip

Best for: Dogs that shed heavily, such as German Shepherds and Labs.

Why I like it: Sofa Shield covers everything—the seat, backrest, and arms of your couch. It's made of a quilted microfiber and sold in many sizes, including pieces that can fit on a sectional corner, a large recliner, and a loveseat.

My Aunt used a Sofa Shield on her blue sofa for her Golden Retriever and I can vouch that it was easy for her to machine-wash. It's reversible and comes in more than a dozen colors and patterns, including an animal paw print.

Straps help hold it in place, though some online reviewers said the straps can slip if their dog gets too rambunctious.

Waterproof Couch Cover

Pros

  • Under $20
  • Easy to wash
  • Waterproof: liquid pools on top

Cons

  • Only protects the seat of the couch

Best for: A money-saving way to waterproof your couch seat.

Why I like it: Bedsure's affordable, waterproof couch cover only protects the seat, but if that's all you need, it's a great budget choice from a trusted brand. (One of my cats loves the Bedsure pet couch.)

My cousin has a Bedsure cover on her couch and her dog preferred it to the regular couch fabric. She has never had to test the waterproof aspect, but Amazon reviewers report that liquid pools on the top and does not soak through.

Because this protector is a made of lightweight polyester and is smaller than a full-size cover, it's easier than most to run through the washing machine.

Flannel Couch Cover
Credit: Funny Fuzzy

Pros

  • Plush, velvety-feeling flannel
  • Non-slip bottom
  • Pretty colors available
  • Can be a floor mat or go in the car's backseat, too

Cons

  • Not waterproof

Best for: Dogs that constantly jump on and off the couch.

Why I like it: This pet-friendly protector is a soft, plush mat for your couch made with a velvety-feeling flannel on the top and plastic cloth on the bottom so that it won't slip. It comes in beautiful colors including green, pink, and blue, plus the more standard gray, beige, and white.

Though it's sized to be a couch cover, you could lay this anywhere in your home as a floor mat, or put it in the backseat to protect your car seats. This is not a waterproof choice.

This cover gets a lot of positive reviews on the Funny Fuzzy website. "We love this because it looks good, is super comfy and stays put!" one reviewer wrote. "We have used the complicated ones with the straps and all the tucking and they are terrible. This gets taken off and washed so easily!"

Fabric cover being removed from a cushioned surface
honeycomb pattern water resistant stretch full cover magic couch cover with yellow lab on a beige couch

Pros

  • Stretches to fit over each cushion, so it stays in place
  • Buy as many or as few as you need
  • Brand says fabric is stain- and water-resistant

Cons

  • The cost goes up the more cushions you cover

Best for: Complete coverage, protecting your nice couch fabric underneath.

Why I like it: These couch covers stay in place! And they really preserve your fabric. Each is designed with stretch elastic to fully fit over individual cushions on a sectional sofa or a regular couch.

You have the option to just buy covers for the seat cushions, including the chaise part of a sectional couch (shown), or spring for the backrest cushions and throw pillows too.

"From stained disaster to showroom-ready!" wrote one happy user on the brand's website. "This cover saved my 10-year-old sofa and there's no constant adjusting." Funny Fuzzy says the fabric is stain- and water-resistant.

The price shown is for one small couch cushion. The cost to cover, say, three medium couch cushions would be more like $90, making this potentially more pricey than other non-fitted couch cover choices.

Rugged Quilted Dog Blanket
Credit: LL Bean

Pros

  • Two-sided, one a twill denim and one a soft sherpa
  • Can be washed repeatedly for years and hold up
  • Place it on the couch or anywhere else your dog lies

Cons

  • Only two sizes

Best for: Dogs that track dirt and mud inside.

Why I like it: One side is durable twill denim, the other is soft sherpa. Your dog can use either. There are online reviews on the LL Bean website that say one of these covers can last more than a decade.

If your dog tracks in dirt and you intend to wash the sofa cover frequently, a reviewer wrote, "These blankets are soft and flexible, but very tough. They take repeated washings without loosing their color or falling apart."

Because this is a blanket style you can place it anywhere on the couch, or use it in your dog's crate, in the car, on your bed, or on the floor.

There are only two sizes (medium and large) and several reviewers wish the brand would bring back a size for extra-large dogs.

Nonslip Quilted Furniture Protector
Credit: Ameritex

Pros

  • Non-slip bottom and straps hold it, even on leather
  • Arm covers have handy pockets
  • Brand makes covers for recliners and beds, too

Cons

  • Perhaps not as waterproof as the brand claims
  • Only two sizes available

Best for: Protecting a leather couch.

Why I like it: Both an anti-slip backing and straps help hold this cover securely—even on a leather sofa. "Absolutely stays in place on my leather couch even with a 50-pound Golden Retriever jumping on it," wrote one Amazon reviewer.

Also great: The arm covers have pockets to hold a book, tablet, reading glasses, and more. Ameritex makes a similar cover for a recliner and a blanket for a bed or couch.

Though Ameritex claims this is a waterproof cover, online reviewers give mixed feedback, with some saying it is water-resistant but not foolproof. Also, this only comes in two lengths, 68 inches or 78 inches long.

Waterproof Dog Blanket

Pros

  • Throw blanket style is easy to place in your dog's spot
  • Sizes for small, medium, large, and extra-large dogs
  • Reviewers say it is durable

Cons

  • Doesn't cover the whole couch

Best for: Protecting light-colored furniture.

This throw blanket can be moved around the house, easy to place wherever your dog prefers to be—a favorite side of the couch, the foot of your bed, the back seat of the car. Though it isn't made to cover the whole couch, for some pet owners, it's all that is needed.

Bedsure's blanket is waterproof, and comes in sizes for small, medium, large, and extra large dogs—this link is to the medium size.

Several Amazon reviewers wrote that it is chew-proof. "These are the only blankets my Dobermans won't chew up," wrote one.

How I chose the best couch covers for dogs

linebreak

This guide is based on expert reporting, real-world feedback from dog owners, and reviews on Amazon and brand websites, rather than a single Lab test. The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab has previously evaluated and reviewed couch covers, including ones for dogs, and their data also helped inform this story.

We also sourced recommendations from dog owners, including dog-owning product analysts in our Labs. When rating the best sofa covers for homes with pets, we considered whether they were waterproof or non-slip, and what sizes and colors were available. All of the choices on our list are machine-washable, since dog owners told us that was a must.

What to look for when shopping for the best couch covers for pets

Rank your priorities when considering what pet-friendly couch protector to buy:

✔️ Waterproof: Not everyone needs a sofa cover that's waterproof, but if you have a puppy or a dog who is incontinent, drools, or prone to getting sick, this should be a top concern. A waterproof cover is also good if you have a kid who might tip over milk or juice. Some sofa covers are merely water-resistant, and that might be enough for occasional accidents.

✔️ Non-slip: A couch cover that stays in place is important if your dog plays or digs around on the couch. It can also be key if you have a leather sofa, because other covers can slide around on the leather.

✔️ Machine-washable: All of the choices on our list can go in the washing machine, but always read the tag. Some should be washed in cold water and some should be dried on low heat or air-dried.

✔️ Size: Measure your couch and be sure the couch protector will cover whichever parts your pet uses. Some couch covers only lay on the seat, others are larger and go over the backrest or even the arms.

✔️ Colors: Whether you want the couch cover to blend in and match your couch, or if you want to try a new pop of color on top of the upholstery, there are a lot of colors to chose from among the brands on our list.
