She may hold a royal title, but we’d argue she could add beauty icon to the list, too. At 61, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, has quietly become one of the most stylish members of the Royal Family – and her recent bob transformation has only cemented that status.
She also proves that mature beauty doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, all it takes is a simple makeup swap or a five-minute hairstyle to make all the difference.
Here, we’ve pinpointed eight key updates that have made Sophie look so effortlessly youthful – and the lessons we can all take from Sophie’s beauty playbook.
Choose a bob for fuller-looking hair
It wouldn't be a Sophie beauty round-up without mentioning her recent chop. Last month, she took us all by surprise when she joined the bob brigade with a makeover we didn't see coming.
The haircut didn't just take off length — it took years off, too. There comes a point when longer hair can begin to drag the features down, whereas a bob has the opposite effect.
As Sophie’s transformation proves, shorter locks also help to create the illusion of fuller, bouncier hair for a fresher, more youthful finish. Sometimes, all it takes is a trip to the salon.

Ditch heavy foundation
As we get older, we're often told that less is more and when it comes to base makeup, Sophie proves exactly why. The Duchess tends to opt for a light, glowy base that lets her natural freckles shine through.
‘Heavy foundations are incredibly unforgiving on mature skin, but a lightweight, sheer base will act like a soft-focus veil,’ says top makeup artist Ruby Hammer. If Sophie’s glow is anything to go by, we’re sold.
Add a splash of colour
Colourful makeup has come a long way and, today, it’s far more wearable than you might think. Injecting a subtle pop of colour is one of the easiest ways to refresh your routine, and Sophie demonstrates it beautifully.
The Duchess appears to have a particular soft spot for colourful eyeliner, having been spotted in both a rich merlot and a Diana-esque blue. Clearly, she’s brushed up on her colour theory – burgundy creates contrast to make her blue eyes pop, while blue enhances their brightness.
Try a softly lifted brow
Never underestimate the power of a good brow. The right shape frames the face and can even create a subtle lifting effect – something Sophie clearly knows a thing or two about.
Earlier this year, the Duchess debuted a refreshed brow look, with a more defined, softly lifted shape that completely transformed her appearance. As eyebrow expert Karen Betts explains, ‘by refining the brows, you can restore structure to the face and open the eye area without the need for more invasive treatments.’
She adds, ‘In many cases, it’s the most effective, low-maintenance way to refresh your entire look.’
Update your smokey eyes
When you think of royal glamour, a sultry smokey eye probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But Sophie and Catherine, Princess of Wales have both proved it has its place, even in the palace. All it takes is a soft technique that works on a mature face.
With shimmering, smokey taupe shadow swept across the lids, black liner worked into the lash line and, of course, a generous coat of mascara, Sophie is proof that a smokey eye is flattering at any age.
Don’t be afraid of sparkle
The Duchess has also made a strong case for grown-up glitter — and it’s a look approved by A-list makeup artist Bobbi Brown. As Bobbi tells GH, ‘No matter how old you are, adding a touch of shimmer always makes you look and feel better.’
Sophie embraces it with a soft, fine glitter dusted across the lids, gently smoked out. It’s subtle, but incredibly flattering, making her blue eyes shine.
Rethink your bronzer placement
We all know bronzer can add a sun-kissed glow, but Sophie has found another clever use for it. The Duchess proves that, with the right placement, bronzer can also help create a more lifted look.
While it’s tempting to sweep bronzer all over the face in pursuit of a bronzed-goddess glow, Ruby warns that this can actually drag the features down. Sophie, however, shows exactly how it’s done. Swept high across the cheekbones, you can see how it lifts everything.
Remember, nothing beats a simple updo
It’s not a royal occasion without an elegant updo – whether that be an intricate twist or a perfectly polished bun. Sophie, however, proves that it doesn’t have to be complicated to be chic.
One of our favourite looks is her French comb bun. It’s a classic style that’s surprisingly easy to recreate. OSMO ambassador and award-winning hairstylist Jude Taylor says it shouldn’t take more than five minutes.
Not only is it simple, but incredibly flattering too. Jude tells GH, ‘it’s a style that frames the face beautifully, and all round adds effortless elegance.’
