When we think of hair that looks youthful, we often picture volume, movement and plenty of bounce. Yet for some reason, long hair is still unfairly written off as ageing once we reach midlife and beyond. But at 70, Jerry Hall makes a compelling case for keeping the length with her flattering ‘bombshell blowout’.
The supermodel icon recently enjoyed a glitzy night out at the ELLE Style Awards in London, where she looked phenomenal. While her classic pairing of a sleek cat-eye liner and a red lip was glamorous, it was her big, bouncy blow-dry that truly stole the show.
Jerry's long, blonde locks were full of lift at the roots, with a deep side parting adding even more volume. Her lengths fell into big, bouncy curls that had been softly brushed out, creating a glamorous, high-volume finish.
‘It’s a misconception that women after 50 need to go shorter,’ says Carol Ritchie, OSMO Ambassador and salon owner. ‘Jerry’s hair is full of movement and softness with fab volume – there’s nothing flat or being dragged down with this style.’
As Carol explains, Jerry's hair dispels many of the myths surrounding long hair after 50, proving that it can look incredibly youthful. ‘She’s wearing the ultimate ‘bombshell’ blowout, and it’s very flattering on her. The mega lift at the roots paired with gentle movement around the face actually helps to soften her features. I can’t believe she’s 70!’
When it comes to achieving a big glossy blow-dry like this in midlife and beyond, Carol says it comes down to three things: condition, prep and styling.
She explains what makes Jerry’s hair lengths look especially youthful is the shine. ‘Her hair looks very healthy and youthful. Rather than focusing on age, your hair length should be guided by its condition. If your hair is healthy, you can wear it however you like.’
As for styling, there’s no doubt a talented glam squad is behind Jerry’s impressive curls, but Carol assures us that a similar look can be achieved at home. ‘It’s all in the prep,’ she tells GH. ‘A volumising shampoo and conditioner will give you that extra oomph.’
Before picking up the hairdryer, she also recommends spritzing OSMO Extreme Volume Root Lifter through the roots for an extra boost of volume.
‘To blow-dry, section the hair and use a round bristle brush. As you dry each section, twist it around your fingers and then pin the curl while you move on to the next section,’ she explains.
To make the style last, she recommends leaving the pinned curls to cool completely before taking them down. Carol notes that this is the perfect opportunity to finish the rest of your glam – in Jerry’s case, that means a good red lip.
‘Once cool, unpin and using wide-tooth comb to gently break up the curls. Finish with a serum to help manage flyaways. You don’t want anything overly oily as this could pull the curls down, you just want something that gives that glossy, smooth finish.’ Here, she recommends the OSMO Blinding Shine Definer.
Safe to say, if we can get anywhere near Jerry’s ‘bombshell’ blow-dry, we’ll be calling it a good hair day.
