It’s not just Demi Moore’s hair that’s undergone a major transformation. As well as trading her long, waist-skimming locks for a sharp, jaw-kissing bob, she’s just unveiled another noticeable shift: her makeup.

With her edgier cut, Demi has leaned into a more daring makeup look to match. Her usual smokey eye has been levelled up, and made more dramatic than ever before.

It’s not a coincidence. Celebrity makeup artist Mira Parmar explains that when you go for a big chop, your makeup should be reconsidered, too, since more of the face is on show. It’s definitely something you should pay extra attention to when you’re over 50, like Demi.

‘Hair frames your face,’ Mira explains to GH. ‘Long hair can hide a lot of things, whereas with short hair, your face immediately becomes more prominent – you’ll see a lot more structure. With short hair, you want to define the eyes, or the lips, to bring out a “wow” feature.’

Mira believes Demi has struck the perfect balance with her latest look. ‘Demi’s bob and smokey eye work really well together. It’s very cool and modern.’ She explains that the smokey eye complements the bob, since both lean into an edgier look.

If, like Demi, you’ve gone for the chop and want to make your eyes pop, Mira recommends opting for smokey products that you can swipe on, smudge and go. Her top picks include Victoria Beckham’s Kajal Pencil and Vieve’s Eye Wand – or, for more purse-friendly buys, she suggests looking to e.l.f.

‘Instead of dark, harsh blacks, use aubergines, navy blues or really dark browns that are more flattering on mature skin. Just smudge across the eyes for that really gorgeous smokey effect,’ she adds.

Alternatively, if heavy eye makeup isn’t your thing, Mira says the lips are another great feature to define and uplift your bob. ‘If you go for a statement lip, keep it as a focal point’ she says, ‘you want to keep your skin and eyes clean. You can’t go wrong with a classic red.’

Beyond the ‘wow’ features, Mira says with more of your face on show, the placement of the rest of your makeup should be taken into consideration too. ‘Some elements can be kept the same, such as highlighter, but other parts, such as your brows and blush placement, need consideration.’

‘With brows, because you don’t have all that hair framing the face, brows just need to be a little bit more defined. If you prefer to keep things soft, try fluffier brows. But, if you prefer a more dramatic brow, pushed-up, shaped brows work just as well,’ she says.

‘When it comes to blush, with shorter hair you see more of the cheekbones, so you can use this to your advantage and create a lifting effect. When it comes to mature skin, to keep it looking young, fresh and lifted, you want to sweep in an upwards motion.’

So yes, a good chop really does change everything.
