Demi Moore has served up one standout beauty look after another during Cannes Film Festival — from a surprise bob to bold blush. But for her final appearance on the carpet, the actress ended on a high with eye-opening ‘doll lashes’, proving that a statement lash can still feel modern and flattering at 50-plus.

Though it could be easy to be distracted by her Balenciaga balloon gown (yes, it’s every bit as dramatic and high-fashion as it sounds), the GH beauty team couldn’t help but zoom in on her makeup, where her dramatic, fluttering lashes had us instantly under a spell.

Demi is no stranger to a standout lash — she’s typically seen sporting pretty, fluttering lashes with a more natural finish, achieved with just a few coats of mascara. But for her final Cannes look, the actress, and her MUA Raoul Alejandre, pulled out all the stops.

‘Demi has opted for individual and clusters of lashes which create a ‘doll-like’ effect,’ says top makeup artist and founder Ruby Hammer. Take a close look, and you’ll see long, separated strands on both the top and bottom lash lines creating a striking, eye-opening effect.

While false lashes can sometimes get a bad reputation in midlife for looking heavy or overpowering, Ruby says Demi’s look proves that beauty has no age limit — it’s all about the technique. ‘Any age can wear any style of makeup, we just have to adapt it to our features. Rather than avoiding false or dramatic lashes altogether, it’s about making them work for you,’ she says.

‘As we mature our eyes naturally undergo a few changes. The skin on the lids can lose a bit of elasticity and our natural lashes tend to thin out or lose pigment,’ she explains. ‘A strip lash can weigh mature lids down, but using a brilliant volumising mascara and opting for individual and cluster lashes will beautifully open up the eye,’

Better still, the right lash placement can also create a subtle lifting effect. ‘By curling and adding a false lash, you can counteract the appearance of hooded eyes. With the lashes sweeping past the fold of skin, creating the illusion of a more lifted eye. ‘

While day-to-day life might not call for ‘doll-lashes’, they work beautifully for special occasion looks. Unfortunately, not all of us have a glam-squad on speed dial — but luckily, Ruby says the look can be recreated at home. ‘Always start by curling your natural lashes,’ she says. ‘You don’t want the false lashes to fight against poker straight ones.’

‘To apply the lashes, I recommend applying a tiny dot of lash glue to the back of your hand and letting it go tacky. Then use tweezers to dip the base of the lashes into the glue and hold at the outer corner of your eye,’ says Ruby.

For the doll-like effect, she recommends using longer lashes on the outer corners and shorter lashes as you work your way inwards. ‘You will only need a couple of clusters per eye to get a ‘doll’ effect,’ she adds.

To finish, she recommends blending with a coating of defining mascara on both the top and bottom lashes.

So yes, a statement lash can look just as sophisticated in your sixties as it does in your twenties.
