Football may be called the beautiful game but there’s nothing attractive to see in the morning mirror when you’ve been up watching the World Cup in the early hours. And especially not if you’ve enjoyed a few drinks as well. Puffy skin, dark circles and an exhausted pallor all add up to a complexion that looks worse than actual jetlag from a trip to North America.
If this sounds familiar, or you fear it’s only a matter of time before your face pays the World Cup penalty, it’s worth knowing how to tackle the problem. To find out how best to deal with World Cup face fatigue, we enlisted our new MVP, celebrity makeup artist Cassie Lomas, whose clientele includes football-adjacent A-listers such as Coleen Rooney and Abbey Clancy. (Not that we’re suggesting these ladies need any such help!)
‘I've been a makeup artist for 30 years working mainly in the entertainment industry, so my clients usually arrive in the chair feeling tired from busy schedules, says Cassie, who is about to launch her own By Cassie makeup range later this month. ‘So I’ve got some trusted quick fixes that work.’
Fix up with skin
‘I always start with a good skin prep routine,’ says Cassie. ‘I’ll use a good hydrating and brightening sheet mask, followed by a facial massage to wake up the skin and get a natural flush to the cheeks. I always have brightening eye drops in my kit and facial hydrating sprays. I love the Subtle Energies one.’
Prep, prep, prep
Don’t just pile makeup on to tired, groggy skin. ‘If you’re hungover, your skin eats makeup so make sure you use a good primer before applying any makeup,’ says Cassie. ‘The Elf grip primer is the best for locking your look into place.’
Go with cream
‘Use cream makeup products to illuminate, even out your skin tone and add warmth ensuring you look your most radiant,’ advises Cassie. ‘My ‘I Am Enough’ Face Makeup by CASSIE does this in one single step – it’s out 29 June. I also love the By Terry CC serum to give the skin an instant glow. Use this as the base for the rest of your makeup to sit on.’
Try to minimise foundation
Don’t pile on base. ‘Use a good concealer,’ says Cassie. ‘It will smooth out any areas of discoloration, so you can avoid a heavy foundation as it can make the skin look more tired.’
Cheat a wide-awake look
‘Brightening the undereye is key to covering fatigue,’ says Cassie. ‘Always apply a colour corrector before concealing to erase dark circles and any sign of tiredness. The Huda Beauty Faux Filter correctors are incredible.’
Brighten your complexion
Avoid drying powders on tired, hungover skin. ‘A liquid blush like the Rodial is lightweight, which adds to the fresh feeling we want and also adds radiance,’ says Cassie. ‘Tap it on to the top of the cheekbones so the light catches it as you move.’
Tired, us? Never! Now who’s playing at 2am tomorrow night?
