While the heatwave (and the stuffy, sleepless nights) persists, Queen Camilla stepped out at the Wimbledon Championships yesterday looking remarkably refreshed. A closer look at her makeup revealed one clever trick that’s perfect for brightening tired, mature eyes. Better still, it’s a technique that’s incredibly easy to replicate at home.
All it takes is one small tweak to your routine, requiring nothing more than a touch of eyeshadow and some clever placement. ‘The trick here is to bounce light from the centre of the face to create dimension and radiance,’ explains celebrity makeup artist Fiona Florczak.
As she tells GH, it’s surprisingly simple: ‘Camilla’s fresh look has been created by adding a light eyeshadow to the inner corner. This instantly creates a brightening effect, making the eyes look more awake and wider.’ It’s an easy disguise for tired-looking eyes.
Not only does the technique brighten the eyes but, as Fiona explains, it also creates the perfect base for the rest of your eye makeup, too: ‘By brightening the lid, it also gives your lashes a contrasting backdrop, making them appear fuller and fluffier.’ Judging by Camilla’s fluttery lashes, it certainly seems to work.
Fiona stresses, however, that it's important not to overdo it. ‘It should always look natural,’ she says, advising against choosing a shade that's lighter than the natural whites of your eyes.
‘A matte shadow, in a light flesh or off-white tone, is perfect for this,’ she explains, adding, ‘I tend to steer away from shimmers or anything with glitter pigments, as they can be messy to work with and can also be ageing.’
A go-to in her own kit is the Makeup By Mario Master Mattes palette. A cult favourite, it features 12 shades, from soft neutrals to deeper smokey tones, making it a brilliant all-rounder. But here, the focus is all on the lighter nudes. ‘The soft white shade is beautiful and particularly flattering on mature skin,’ says Fiona. Simply apply a little to the inner corners of the eyes – à la Camilla – for an instantly brighter look
Consider it another royal beauty trick to add to your repertoire.
