Hair thinning can happen to all of us and a whole range of factors can contribute, from hormonal changes to ageing and stress. And if you’ve noticed more hairs in your brush as we sweat through this unprecedentedly hot summer, you aren’t alone. Outside of the natural hair growth cycle, sun exposure and humidity can lead to weaker strands and follicles.

That’s where a hair growth serum can help, and we’ve just finished testing a standout performer at the Good Housekeeping Institute. The Pantene Grow Abundant Anti-Hair Loss Scalp Serum features a range of clinically backed ingredients, which work to reduce both shedding and breakage year-round.

Here’s everything you need to know.

How does it work?

The serum promotes growth by strengthening the hold our roots have on hairs at the follicle, with ingredients that target both shedding and breakage.

The first is niacinamide, which works to boost blood circulation to the scalp, ensuring our hair follicles receive the oxygen and nutrients they need for growth. It also protects the follicles from damaging oxidative stress caused by environmental aggressors such as pollution and UV.

The formula also contains a vitamin B5 complex, which helps to draw moisture into the hair shaft, locking it in for long-lasting hydration and protection. This, in turn, reduces breakage, helping your hair grow longer and stronger.

We reviewed this product as a part of our best hair growth serums test. We sent it out alongside a range of market-leading formulas to our panel to use as instructed by the manufacturer for 12 weeks. All packaging was covered to avoid brand bias.

We then asked panellists to give us detailed feedback on how effective the serum was. We asked them whether they saw a difference in length and strength, as well as other practical questions such as how easy the product was to use (key to consistency) and whether it left any residue in their hair.

We also asked a group of testers to come into the lab at the start and end of the trial period, so we could use our specialist Hair Metrix machine to measure any change in hair follicle density.

The feedback? Our panellists were absolutely wowed by this Pantene serum, scoring it an impressive 81/100, which makes it the runner-up (and best-value buy) in our round-up. Testers loved the changes to their hair, saying it looked and felt healthier and stronger at the end of the trial. ‘My hair has more volume, my scalp feels healthier, and my dry hair is way more hydrated than before, too,’ one person told us. Another said that their hairdresser even commented on the increase in volume in their hair.

Testers also loved that it didn’t leave any residue behind, and the non-greasy formula meant it didn't leave fine hair looking greasy. This meant everyone was happy to apply it every day as recommended – and we all know consistency is the key to success with hair growth treatments.

If you prefer to deal in cold, hard data, you won’t be disappointed. This serum scored nearly full marks in our lab tests, successfully delivering an increase in hair follicle density over the 12-week trial period.

Our final verdict

This serum outperformed products that cost three times as much in our testing, making it our top pick for value. It’s also easy to add to your routine and doesn’t leave any residue behind, so you’re more likely to use it every day.

Forget seasonal shedding – here’s to longer, stronger hair by the end of summer.
