best washer dryers
Good Housekeeping UK

Let’s face it, buying the best washing machine and the best tumble dryer is expensive. Invest in our two current top-rated models, and it will set you back over a grand. Plus, both home appliances are bulky, so it's not always easy to find space for them.

While a good washing machine is undoubtedly essential, you can turn to a clothesline, airer, or dehumidifier to help dry your clothes. But, there are some tasks – like drying fluffy towels – that tumble dryers are just better at and having a combined washer dryer means you won't have to sacrifice either appliance. They're also space saving and more budget-friendly.

But which models deliver on performance, no matter the task? The Good Housekeeping Institute has done the legwork for you, washing and drying hundreds of kilos of laundry to find the best washer dryers for your home.

Here's a snapshot of our winners, but you'll find our full reviews below.

how we test washer dryers

How we test washer dryers

To test washer dryers, we look at everything from their washing and drying abilities (of course) to energy consumption. This is everything we analyse to make sure we’re answering all your shopping needs.

Wash tests and stain removal: our experts run a quick 30C and 40C cycle full of bedding and towels and analyse spin efficiency by weighing the load before and after to see how much water is removed. We also measure water usage with a meter, check whether the programme runs for the length of time it promises, and take note of the drum capacity. We also stain the clothes with everything from mud to blood before washing and then assess stain removal using a specialist machine called a DigiEye.

Drying performance: we try out the cotton and synthetic programmes, again weighing the wet laundry before and after the cycles, and noting how long the programmes last. After the cycle, we assess whether the load still feels damp, note how creased the items are (if at all!) and whether the laundry is tangled up.

Checking for shrinkage: when testing cotton drying, our experts also include a shrinkage square in the load. This is measured before and after the cycle to work out how much shrinkage, if any, has occurred while drying.

Washer dryer combo testing: we also try a combined washing and drying cycle, again checking whether the programme length matches what it says on the machine. Each of the tests above are done twice (at least) to check for any differences.

Extra features: premium washer dryers have additional features like Wi-Fi compatibility, so we try them all to see whether they add anything to the user experience and if they’re simple to connect and use.

Ease of use: we award marks for models with intuitive controls that are easy to figure out (and remember) without referring to the instructions.

Design: machines with accurate programme lengths, a durable build, and a child lock feature are given extra marks.

Instructions: we look for washer dryer combos with clear instructions, good safety advice and troubleshooting information.

Energy consumption: we also measure how much energy each washer dryer consumes. Using these figures, we then work out how much it would cost to run a fully loaded wash and dry cycle based on the current energy price cap of 24.67 per kWh. You’ll find the detail in our key specs below.

We then pull together all the data and feedback to award a final score out of 100. These are our winners.

LG FWY385WWLN1 Washer Dryer

Pros

  • Excellent all-round performance
  • Great value

Cons

  • Quick wash leaves clothes very wet

Score: 95/100

It was only a matter of time before AI infiltrated our appliances and now it’s integrated into your washer dryer… But, we’re not complaining; this intelligent machine analyses the fabrics and weight of your wash and adjusts the settings accordingly, so your laundry always receives top-notch care while using less electricity.

This model performed well on both a cotton and synthetic cycle, tackling coffee stains with ease. And the 14-minute quick wash didn’t drop a mark in terms of energy efficiency either. But the water consumption and spin efficiency readings weren’t quite as economical.

You might prefer to use the ‘Turbo Wash’. The cycle showers your clothes from multiple angles and our laundry took just 45 minutes, using 0.37kWh (10p of electricity). Both drying programmes impressed too, leaving us with fresh laundry that only had minimal tangling and creasing.

There’s a lot to love about this washer-dryer; overall it’s not as energy efficient as LG’s Wash Tower (below), but from its sleek tempered glass door to its clear LED display and responsive touch screen controls, it’s a worthy winner.

LG WashTower WT1210BBTN1 Wash & Dry

Pros

  • More drying capacity than most combined washer dryers
  • Eye-level interface lets you control both machines

Cons

  • Controls are quite cluttered

Score: 92/100

LG’s uniquely designed WashTower would make an innovative addition to your home, especially if you’re short on space. Rather than combining a washer and dryer in one machine, they come stacked on top of each other with a separate plug for each appliance – so they can be used individually – but sharing the same interface.

Its washing programmes didn’t disappoint, removing baby food, blood and coffee stains from our laundry, and we were impressed by its low energy consumption figures across the quick wash and cotton cycle.

One thing to note is that there’s no combined wash and dry cycle so you do need to manually move your laundry from one to the other; however, the dryer does preheat during the wash cycle, helping to shorten your laundry time.

Tech-savvy shoppers will also like the LG ThinQ app, which monitors the cycle and lets you know when it’s done – no more being tricked by the claimed run time on the interface!

Pros

  • Minimal creasing across all cycles
  • Lots of cycle options

Cons

  • Drum seal gathers fluff

Score: 92/100

Another strong all-rounder, this washer-dryer from Hisense stood out for its smooth results, with washing emerging only lightly creased after all cycles. Both the wash cycles and combined wash and dry cycles also impressed, shifting a wide variety of stains from baby food to tea.

Our testers appreciated this washer-dryer’s logical, responsive controls and auto-dosing option, too. On the downside, water consumption was relatively high in all our tests – and our testers had some difficulty with removing lint that gathered in the seal. But overall, this is a great washer-dryer at an attractive price.

Pros

  • Quiet even at maximum spin
  • Wide variety of programme options

Cons

  • Struggled to remove makeup stains

Score: 87/100

Just 15 minutes stand between you and freshly washed clothes thanks to Samsung’s handy quick wash cycle. Its other cycles were reliable too, removing nearly 83% of stains from cotton and over 80% from synthetic fabrics on test – even coffee and tea stains vanished. Plus, you can adjust its settings to suit different loads.

It wasn’t the most economical in terms of water and electricity, but testers praised its drying performance. It evenly removed over 86% of water from cotton fabrics, and it didn’t take our testers long to untangle the bed sheets, either.

The machine was notably quiet, and scored full marks for its ease of use, while our experts appreciated the sleek, modern design. The end-of-cycle tone was slightly annoying, but at least you won’t be able to say you didn’t know the washing was done!

Pros

  • Excellent drying performance
  • AI wash significantly improved efficiency and cycle time

Cons

  • High water consumption

Score: 81/100

Haier’s sleek stacked washer-dryer system feels more premium than your typical all-in-one appliance. While obviously much taller than a regular model, it’s still more compact than having two appliances stacked on top of each other – and the benefits of two drums go beyond capacity.

While traditional washer dryers can sometimes be let down by subpar drying results, this impressed us. Across both cotton and polycotton cycles, our laundry emerged fully dry with minimal tangling, shrinkage and creasing – the result of long, gentle cycles and extra drum space.

Washing results were also strong, though cycle times were often longer than claimed, and we measured high water consumption across most tests. You could negate this with the genuinely useful AI wash cycle, which adapted to the load to reduce water and energy usage, while also improving spin efficiency. It’s a smart solution for those with vertical space and lots of laundry to get through.

Pros

  • Control panel is logical and easy to use
  • Low energy consumption for wash and combined cycles
  • Child lock available

Cons

  • High energy consumption on drying cycles
  • Diagrams in the instruction manual are quite fuzzy

Score: 78/100

If speed is a priority, this washer dryer is a strong contender. The quick wash cycles took just 15 minutes, while the more thorough cotton programme took a little over an hour, which is in line with the machine’s estimated time – a rarity in the laundry world!

Common food stains were lifted more easily than greasy ones, and when we popped the clothes through a drying cycle, we noticed slight shrinkage (around 3%), so it may be best to air dry your favourite knitwear. The combined cycle took just three and a half hours, used less energy and water than many other models we’ve tried, and was notably quiet registering at 60.2dB – similar to a conversation or electric toothbrush.

Hisense Washing-Drying Machine WD3S9043BW3

Pros

  • Easy to use, with logical controls and large porthole
  • Good stain removal on cotton cycles

Cons

  • High energy and water consumption
  • Cotton drying cycle can leave clothes creased or damp

Score: 76/100

This Hisense washer dryer delivers dependable results across most cycles, with the cotton wash cycle performing particularly well on tricky stains like coffee and curry. Usability is a strong point, thanks to a clear control panel, large porthole and well-designed manual. There’s also app connectivity, which lets you monitor energy use and get tailored cycle suggestions based on your laundry.

It’s not the most efficient model we’ve tested, with high energy and water consumption across several washing and drying cycles. Its drying performance was somewhat inconsistent, too – while polycotton loads dried evenly, the cotton cycles left some damp patches and moderate creasing. Overall, though, this is a good value machine that feels well-built and gets the basics right – just be mindful of running costs.

Pros

  • Detergent drawers slide in and out easily
  • Instructions include a programme chart with details on cycles, load size and RPM
  • Affordable

Cons

  • The wash and dry cycles ran over the suggested time by an hour
  • No auto-dosing function

Score: 76/100

You can wash and dry a load of laundry in under four hours with this affordable buy. While that’s still an hour over the suggested duration, it’s notably quicker than many other models on the market, which is a compromise we can work with.

During the hour-long wash cycles, the machine dealt with everyday food stains like red wine and tea but was less effective on blood and grease. Although our clothes came out of the dryer quite creased, there was minimal tangling and the load was evenly dried in two hours.

The control panel is self-explanatory and easy to use, and our tester appreciated the machine’s wide-opening door, which makes loading fuss-free. Everything considered, it’s a good, budget-friendly pick.

Haier X 7 Washer Dryer HWD120-B14367UUK

Pros

  • Large capacity for bigger households
  • Impressive range of smart features

Cons

  • Drying cycles are long and use quite a lot of energy

Score: 76/100

Larger households will appreciate the generous 12-kilo wash capacity of this Haier washer dryer. It handled stain removal well in our tests, delivering consistent results across cotton and synthetic cycles, while its roomy drum makes light work of bulkier loads like bedding.

It’s packed with extra features, too. The AI wash function automatically adjusts the settings based on your laundry, while the refresh cycle is handy for freshening up clothes without a full wash. The app also stands out, offering tailored cycle suggestions and even letting you scan clothing labels for guidance.

However, drying is where it fell a little short. Cycles ran significantly longer than advertised, particularly on cotton, and the energy use was high. Creasing was also noticeable on shirts after drying, so you may need to get the iron out. Overall, it’s a feature-rich design that’s suited to households needing extra capacity – it’s just not the most efficient choice for regular drying.

Hoover Pro Wash & Dry Series 3 HBWR 4106B8-80

Pros

  • Speedy cotton wash cycle
  • Clear, logical control panel

Cons

  • Capacity feels smaller than advertised
  • Energy and water use is high across several cycles

Score: 75/100

This model’s cotton wash cycle is relatively quick compared to many we’ve tested – just 1 hour 43 minutes – which could be a big plus for busy households. It’s simple to use, thanks to clearly labelled controls and a responsive interface, while the hOn app provides clever guidance on picking the right cycle.

However, capacity is limited. The drum opening measures just 32.5 cm (2-3 cm smaller than many others), and during testing we struggled to fit in even three quarters of the stated maximum load, which may be frustrating if you want to wash bulkier items like bedding.

Its stain removal was solid across both cotton and synthetic washes, handling everything from tomato puree to coffee. The drying performance was more mixed – while the cotton cycle removes most moisture effectively, we noticed some damp patches and creasing. It’s not the most efficient either, particularly when it comes to energy use. Still, for fuss-free laundry at speed, this is a practical mid-range model.

What is a washer dryer and how do they work?

Going back to basics, a washer dryer does exactly what it says on the tin – it washes and then dries your laundry without any manual intervention.

The ‘washer’ part works like any standard washing machine. Once loaded, the drum fills with water, mixing with detergent and soaking your laundry. The drum then moves around via an agitator. Eventually, it drains and refills with water to rinse out the detergent, before draining away all the water and running a spin cycle to remove any excess water.

The ‘dryer’ part works in a similar way to a heat-pump tumble dryer, reheating air that's sucked out of the laundry. Then, it’s cooled so that it condenses into water, which is drained away.

Are washer-dryers any good?

If you’re torn about whether a washer dryer is right for your home, here are the pros and cons of this two-in-one appliance at a glance.

Pros:

  • Space-saving
  • Cheaper than two separate appliances
  • Convenient

Take note:

  • Less effective at drying than a regular tumble dryer with a smaller capacity and longer drying times
  • You can't wash one load while another is drying

Things to consider when buying a washer-dryer

If you've decided a washer dryer is right for you, then it’s time to think about the features you’d like. Here’s what our experts recommend looking out for.

  • Freestanding vs integrated: This will come down to the space available in your home. Freestanding machines offer more flexibility in terms of where they go, fitting into any appropriately sized space. Integrated machines are installed within a kitchen unit and hidden behind a door, matching your other cupboards.
  • Energy rating: All machines are categorised from A to G to reflect their energy efficiency – A is the most economical. While the latest models with sensors are better than older ones as they adjust things like water levels and duration to match the weight of the loaded laundry, running costs still depend on how long it's washing and drying for, and how hard it has to work.
  • Washing capacity and drying capacity: Surprisingly, these capacities differ. Many washer dryers can only dry half (at most) of their washing capacity, meaning you need to remove some laundry before starting the drying cycle.
  • Spin speed: Most washer dryers on our list have a spin speed of 1400rpm (denoting the number of times they spin in a minute). This is similar to our best washing machines; however, some reach 1600rpm. Machines with adjustable spin speeds are good for giving you more control over your laundry, too.
  • Combination programme duration: Some programmes combine washing and drying, so you don’t need to alter the settings once you’ve popped your laundry in the machine. These can be lengthy though – on test, combined cycles varied from a super-speedy four hours to almost nine and a half hours. See if the manufacturer details average times before you buy.
  • Volume: If your washer dryer is likely to run a lot during the day, it's worth looking for a quiet model.

Are washer-dryers as effective as separate washing machines and tumble dryers?

In short, no. But that doesn’t mean you should write them off immediately.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, the washing performance of washer dryers tends to rival that of stand-alone machines. It’s the drying performance where they start to diverge. This is because the washing capacity is much larger than the drying capacity with 2-in-1 machines, and clothing dries better when it has more room to move around.

This means if you’re drying occasional items, a washer dryer should still serve you well. You just need to be careful about how you do your laundry – these are our expert tips.

  • Don’t overload the drum – leave enough room for air to circulate around your clothing
  • Take out any items that don’t need to go in the dryer – some synthetics air-dry quickly or can be placed on a heated clothes airer to speed up the process
  • Separate fabrics before drying – check the care labels to make sure everything is being dried at the correct temperature as this reduces drying times and saves energy
  • Shaking out clothing and sheets before starting the drying cycle helps it to dry faster, as clumped-together fabrics take longer to dry

Final verdict: which washer dryer is the best?

Our best-in-test washer dryer is the LG FWY385WWLN1 Washer Dryer, which seriously impressed us with its excellent washing and drying performance. It's great value and looks sleek, too.

If the LG is a little out of budget for you, our best affordable washer dryer is the Indesit MyTime IDMA75624 Washer Dryer, which can wash and dry a full load in under four hours.
