We're at that time of year when damp and mould are starting to rear their ugly heads again, especially for those of us who live in old houses. There's no way around the fact that everyday life – showering, cooking, drying clothes, even breathing – releases moisture into your home, and if it's not removed somehow, all that humidity can create a breeding ground for nasties.

If you struggle with damp, a dehumidifier is a lifeline for keeping it at bay. Far from being a last resort, these appliances are a sensible purchase for preventing everyday condensation, especially when it’s too cold to open the windows and too expensive to turn the heating on. They’re also great gadgets for drying laundry indoors more quickly if you don’t have outdoor space or it’s constantly raining.

If you’ve been thinking about buying a dehumidifier, you’re in luck. As part of our Good Buys Weekend (running from 00:01 on 2 October to midnight on 4 October) you can get 20% off one of our favourites – the Pro Breeze 20L/Day Compressor Dehumidifier. Simply use the code GHKWKD20 at checkout for your exclusive saving. The offer applies sitewide, even on discounted items like this one!

With impressive humidity extraction and a generous water tank, this powerful dehumidifier from Pro Breeze is one you can set and forget without having to empty it out constantly. It’s a compressor model, which is the best type for indoor spaces that remain above 15°C (for cold environments like garages that stay below 10°C, a desiccant model works better).

It has five operation modes, including laundry mode, max power mode and an automatic setting that reacts to the humidity level in the space. That flap on top oscillates the airflow, helping to distribute air evenly around the room. It also has an activated carbon filter to help create a fresher home environment, which is a nice added extra (just note, we didn’t test its air purification performance).

What our experts said

probreeze compressor dehumidifier review
Pro Breeze

Our household product specialist, Jasmin Joyce, reviewed this dehumidifier last year in the Good Housekeeping Institute lab, where it earned an impressive score of 87/100. “This dehumidifier is a great performer,” Jasmin said. “After two hours running on high power, it decreased the humidity of our testing room from 80% to 49%, which is within the optimal indoor humidity range. In that time, it removed 720ml of water from the air.”

Its performance was excellent when it came to drying laundry, too. “It took four hours and 51 minutes to dry a load of wet laundry hung on a clothes airer, with 89.1% of water removed from the fabrics,” Jasmin reported. Considering wet clothes can take well over 24 hours to dry in a cold house, that’s a great way to speed up the process and prevent musty smells.

But why pick this model over others? “I’d recommend this to someone looking for a reliable dehumidifier with a large tank that can still easily fit into any room,” says Jasmin. “It has a sleek design, and despite weighing 13 kilos, it’s easy to move around thanks to the combination of carry handles and wheels.”

That’s why we named this model our best dehumidifier for bathrooms in our best dehumidifiers roundup – the large tank can cope well with high-condensation rooms, but it won't dominate a small space.

How easy is this Pro Breeze dehumidifier to use?

Pro Breeze

This dehumidifier is a straightforward design that’s very easy to use and maintain. Jasmin highlighted the clearly labelled and responsive controls, as well as the easy-to-remove water tank and filters. To clean the filter, you simply vacuum it, and Pro Breeze recommends replacing it every six months (they’re £15.99 for a pack of three).

The large, 5.6-litre tank is a real plus, particularly in humid rooms such as bathrooms, where you’ll appreciate not having to empty it constantly. The only downside is that it can be a little awkward getting the last of the water out when emptying the tank.

There’s also a child lock and a night display, so you can leave it working without bright lights or button presses from curious fingers. A 24-hour timer allows you to run the dehumidifier when it suits you best, too.

It's fairly quiet, especially for a 20-litre model, so it shouldn’t be too distracting while you’re going about your day. We recorded 50 decibels on the low speed and 56 decibels on the high speed, which is similar to the hum of a fridge.

How to claim 20% off this dehumidifier

Between 2 and 4 October, you can get 20% off this dehumidifier when buying direct from Pro Breeze with code GHKWKD20 as part of Good Housekeeping’s Good Buys Weekend exclusive shopping event. It’s a particularly good time to pick one up before the colder months set in, when condensation, damp and slow-drying laundry can become a real chorse.

If you’d prefer something smaller, we’ve also tested a 12-litre dehumidifier from Pro Breeze – the OmniDry 12L/Day Dehumidifier – which scored 82/100. It’s a little less powerful, but still a great performer in a smaller package (the 20L model is 61cm tall, while the 12L is 45cm tall).

The Good Buys weekend offer applies across the Pro Breeze site, so you shop plenty of other winter-ready products before midnight on Sunday 4 October, including the brand’s range of heaters.
