How we test gas BBQs
Testing gas BBQs at the Good Housekeeping Institute is tasty business. The first thing we look at is a grill's heat distribution. We take temperature readings from across the lid (and the handle to check it’s safe), and place bread across the grill to see how evenly it toasts.
Then we get cooking. To judge each model's grilling skills, we use a menu of both meat and vegan sausages and burgers, along with corn on the cob, vegetable kebabs, chicken breasts and steaks – and, of course, we taste them all just to make sure they have that beautiful, smoky flavour. Our tester also looks at searing marks and how evenly the food has browned.
Finally, we check how well any side burners boil water and milk. Each BBQ is then scored according to its performance, ease of use, design and product information.
Pros
There’s storage space for the gas canister with its own support and strap
Handle and controls were cool to touch throughout
Clear assembly instructions and diagrams
Disposable drip trays make cleaning easier
Cons
No recipes in the instructions
Took about an hour to build with help from another person required
Have to lift one end to manoeuvre it with the wheels and it weighs over 44kg
Score: 91/100
Easy to control and well-designed, this compact Weber BBQ will make summer family feasts a real treat. The burners were quick to ignite, and once up to temperature, we found the heat was evenly distributed across the grill surface with only small colder spots round the very edge.
It made excellent burgers and sausages, but the real star of the show was our whole roast chicken, which took almost an hour and a half but came off the grill with lovely golden skin – sometimes great things come to those who wait. Just note, there’s a slight gap between the two grill plates so thin chipolatas or vegetables might get stuck.
The instructions on the different functions were quite basic too, but for regular barbecuing, it’s quick to heat, easy to control, and a joy to use.

Outback Jupiter 4 Gas/Charcoal Hybrid BBQ

Outback Jupiter 4 Gas/Charcoal Hybrid BBQ
Pros
Large temperature gauge in the hood was easy to read
Handle remained fairly cool
Cons
Large drip tray was tricky to wash
Score: 90/100
Available in a vibrant red, this will stand out in your garden for all the right reasons. But that’s not all; it’s versatile too – as well as four gas burners it has a charcoal basket, and you can remove the central griddle and cook with the likes of a wok instead. Because of this, you’ll need to take care when cleaning, as our tester found the plate could dislodge easily and fall into the burners.
We liked its large control knobs, removable cutting board, built-in shelves, tool hooks and the magnetic bottle opener. But note that you’ll need to store the gas canister separately.
The food itself? Well, its porcelain hood allowed for entirely even heat distribution across the grill, so everything cooked well. In fact, it produced the best vegetable kebabs of all the BBQs we tested.

Cons
Pork sausages cooked unevenly
Score 87/100
Another excellent BBQ, this portable design will work well for small gardens or avid campers. Fitting the gas canister was simple – it’s only compatible with Campingaz’ own canisters though – while the removable grill plates make cleaning easy.
Built-in handholds help with carrying its 13kg weight, while its small stature didn’t limit its cooking capabilities. Its large temperature gauge was clearly readable and although you can’t create cooking zones, its one burner was powerful enough to distribute heat evenly. Meat-free burgers, chicken and steaks cooked best.

Blackstone 28 Griddle and Airfryer Combo

Blackstone 28 Griddle and Airfryer Combo
Pros
Lots of ideas on what to cook in the instructions and online
Side wings feel sturdy and secure
Cons
Took an hour and 45 minutes to build with two people
Griddle surface requires seasoning
Score: 85/100
We all love our air fryers so why not invest in this gas BBQ and air fryer combo that lets you take your favourite appliance outdoors. You can have burgers and sausages charring on the grill and chips crisping up in the air fryer at the same time. A family BBQ never seemed so easy.
Speaking of which, our tester loved how easy this barbecue was to use throughout testing. It comes with good-sized side wings for all your prep and a magnetic bar for hanging metal utensils, as well as hooks. Plus, the grill heated up quickly and the clear controls made it easy to adjust the temperature.
Our sirloin steaks were succulent and juicy, post-grilling, and our chicken had a lovely golden char. The veggie kebabs and corn on the cob were disappointing though, lacking even charring despite cooking on a high heat. That said, it proved a reliable grill overall, and it earned extra brownie points for being easy to clean.

Pros

Exterior lid remained fairly cool (57.6 degrees)
Cons
Fitting the gas pipe was difficult
Burners aren’t visible when cooking – it's not easy to tell when they’re lit
Score: 84/100
This affordable gas BBQ has three burners, plus a side burner and side tables for preparing food, offer plenty of space for grilling a feast for up to six people. This model also features ‘TRU-Infrared Technology’, which the brand claims will make your food up to 50% juicier.
On test, we found cooking took some getting used to. The infrared technology involves a metal plate under the grill to distribute heat more quickly and evenly, but if you’re not used to the tech and don’t have one of our best smart meat thermometers on hand, you run the risk of overcooking your food. After a few goes, however, we achieved meat with good char marks that was also full of flavour.

George Foreman 3 Burner Gas BBQ GFGBBQ3BW

George Foreman 3 Burner Gas BBQ GFGBBQ3BW
Pros
Has hooks for hanging BBQ cooking tools
Contains an in-lid temperature gauge
Cons
The grease trap needed emptying and washing after each use
Score: 82/100
A good choice if you’re after a medium-sized BBQ. This is big enough to feed a family and will fit in most gardens. The wooden-effect shelving will coordinate nicely with wooden outdoor furniture too, but it doesn’t fold down, so you’ll need a decent-sized shed or garage to stow it in.
With three burners, you can create different cooking zones and we found the grill had good heat distribution. That said, there were some inconsistencies with cooking on test. Our sausages didn’t brown uniformly, for example, suggesting some cold spots. Once you familiarise yourself with the grill, however, you’ll find where to place food for optimum results. It cleaned up nicely and is great value for money.
Note, its two wheels don’t lock, so we suggest giving it a miss if your garden slopes.

Pros
Hydraulic pistons slow the BBQ down into trolley format, so you don’t get your fingers caught
Makes barbecuing more versatile and accessible
Cons
Only takes one small canister, so make sure you have spares
Score: 79/100
Frequent campers, meet your new sidekick. This one-burner model has a portable frame that pops up easily thanks to a pull and lock mechanism. Plus, the compact frame should fit into most car boots (although compare the measurements if you have a small car) for easy transportation to the great outdoors.
It cooks well too. Our beef burgers were nicely seared with moisture locked in, and our chicken breasts were deliciously succulent. Sausages were more inconsistent though; while they cooked beautifully inside, they didn’t char evenly. Our testers other cooking complaint was a lack of rendered fat on the sirloin steaks, but that’s a small niggle.
Note, the lid became quite hot on test, so watch your hands and always use the dedicated handle. Be sure to allow time for the BBQ to cool down before hitting the road again too.

Outback Omega 250 2-Burner Gas BBQ

Outback Omega 250 2-Burner Gas BBQ
Pros
Removable side table for easy long-term storage
Fairly easy to clean
Cons
BBQ lid can get very hot
Score: 79/100
Despite being one of the cheapest BBQs on this list, our testers were cheered by its easy-to-use controls and good cooking ability. Its most impressive performance came with our sirloin steaks which were seared and cooked to a beautiful medium-rare consistency, whereas sausages, veggies and chicken breasts were all succulent but lacking consistent colour.
Our expert also liked the side burner, which provided ample room for cooking sauces or preparing side dishes. However, there's no storage space for the gas canister when the BBQ isn’t in use and we’d recommend purchasing a cover if you're planning to store the BBQ outside to keep it in pristine condition for longer. A great buy for small gardens and households.

Pros
The side burner has a cover so it can be used for prepping if not needed for cooking
The main grill bars are close enough together that small sausages and skewers didn’t fall through
Cons
BBQ is quite low (32.5 inches off the ground) so might not suit taller people
Must be stored inside
Score: 76/100
This is a fantastic pick for an affordable family BBQ. Assembly took almost two hours and was a little fiddly, but once built, the burner was quick to ignite, and the grill quickly reached a good cooking temperature.
Meaty sausages and burgers cooked well but our veggie alternatives lacked crispiness. The temperature of the BBQ fluctuated quite a bit when cooking a whole chicken too, which meant we had to monitor its progress throughout the hour and 20-minute cooking time. We’d also have liked each of the four burners to have separate ignition points, but this isn’t a deal breaker.
Once we’d served up our feast, the removable three-piece grill was easy to clean, and the two castor wheels made it easy to store the BBQ away.

Pros
Side burner has a cover plate so it can also be used as a table
Controls are easy to understand and remained cool throughout
Easy to clean
Good value
Cons
Assembly took 2 hours
Ignition took a couple of attempts
No gas regulator is supplied
Score: 76/100
This affordable gas BBQ is suited to the occasional summer cookout. The three burners are easy to adjust, and the side burner provides added versatility for frying up yummy extras for your burgers and sausages.
It took us a couple of attempts to ignite the grill at times, and we found the back of the grill was hotter than the front. However, rotating and moving the food stops things from overcooking and we still managed to achieve some nice grill lines on our burgers, well-charred vegetables and juicy, tender chicken breasts. There’s a keep warm rack too, if you do need to get anything away from direct heat.
Note that assembly took us two hours as there weren’t any tools provided but it’s worth putting in the effort for this budget-friendly, standard family BBQ.

Pros
Controls are clearly labelled and easy to understand
Controls and handle remained cool during use
Assembly instructions and diagrams are easy to follow
Instruction manual includes cleaning advice and troubleshooting
Easy to ignite
Cons
Castor wheels weren’t very effective on grass
Took an hour and a half to build
Score: 73/100
With a solid performance across all our grilling tests, this affordable 4-burner will deliver time and again this summer. Our burgers and sausages had clear grill lines and charring – while still being juicy – and our sirloin steak didn’t stick to the BBQ grate even though we didn’t use any oil. Our chicken breasts were the standout – with great charring, they tasted just as good as they looked.
We had to get a bit more hands-on with the grilling than with other BBQs as the temperature distribution was quite uneven. If you keep moving and rotating your food away from cold and hot spots though, you can easily get great results. Plus, there’s a ‘keep warm’ rack if you need to get ingredients away from direct heat.
Note, the side burner isn’t very powerful and, without a wind shield to protect it, cooking progress was very slow. That aside, this BBQ packs in plenty of features for a very reasonable price.

Why you should trust the Good Housekeeping Institute
We’ve been testing products at the Good Housekeeping Institute for over 100 years, so we know exactly what separates a good product from a middling one. Our senior homes and lifestyle writer, Megan Geall, has written about hundreds of household products and has hunted out the best gas BBQs by visiting brands, scouting out new launches, attending food festivals, and cooking up her own feasts at home.
Every gas BBQ in this list has been rigorously reviewed by our testing team against our detailed protocols, so you can shop with confidence.

How to choose a gas BBQ
There’s lots to consider when investing in a BBQ, so we’ve broken down the features we think are worth keeping in mind.
- Number of burners: The more burners you have, the more cooking zones you can create by setting each one to a different temperature. This is handy if you’re preparing multiple dishes at once. The BBQs on our list range from one burner to six. There’s no specific amount that's better, but be wary that more burners do equate to bigger BBQs. Some BBQs also have a side burner, which tends to be used for preparing food that you wouldn’t grill. These expand your BBQ’s cooking capabilities but aren’t a necessity.
- Storage: This is three-fold. You need to think about where you’ll keep your BBQ in the garden, where you’ll store it over winter and what on-board storage there is. Some BBQs can stay outdoors if they have an adequate cover, but in colder months or bad weather, most will need to be moved inside. If you can store the gas canister in the BBQ itself, that will make it more compact to pack away. Then consider what you’ll need while cooking. Some have shelves or hooks for tools, so you can keep everything you need nearby.
- Side trays: Sitting either side of the grill, these are helpful for preparing and storing food while you’re cooking. Make sure you don’t keep food that needs refrigerating out for too long before you put it on the BBQ though. Most BBQs have one or two, and if there is a side burner, look to see if there’s a cover that will convert it into a workspace. They add extra size to your BBQ but some fold down, which helps if space is at a premium.
- Grill design: As well as the main grill, some BBQs have warming grates built into the lid. These secondary racks can be helpful for expanding your cooking area or keeping some food hot while you continue preparing the rest. Some of the BBQs on our list also have removable grill panels so you can use pans and woks on the burners.
- Additional features: Generally, these are nice to haves, but it’s worth thinking about what else comes in the box. Cleaning tools such as scrapers are particularly helpful too, as then you can scrub your BBQ safe in the knowledge that you’re using the right equipment.
- Gas bottles: All gas BBQs use propane gas rather than butane as it has a lower boiling point and therefore functions effectively all year round. Knowing how often you’ll need to replace your canister is the tricky part as it varies according to your model of BBQ, the number of burners, and the heat setting you use most. As a rough idea, Homebase says that a 10kg gas bottle used for a 4-burner BBQ should last about 14 hours – that’s enough for a fair few evenings gathered around the barbie.
What are the benefits of a gas BBQ?
A gas BBQ gives you control over your cooking. You can alter the temperature, which makes it easier to grill more delicate foods such as vegetables and fish.
They heat up more quickly than charcoal BBQs and tend to be easier to clean. Most gas BBQs just need to be run at a high temperature for a set time before you can scrape off any burnt-on food. Then you’ll just need to deal with a grease tray, rather than disposing of charcoal.
It won't offer the same smoky flavour or reach the same high temperatures as a charcoal BBQ, so may not brown and sear your food in the same way. However, the lower temperatures of a gas BBQ are an advantage if you want to cook joints of meat for a longer period using rotisserie accessories.
Note: There are hybrid BBQs available, offering both gas and charcoal in one, like this good value Outback model on our list.
How do I clean a gas BBQ?
You’ve enjoyed a lovely BBQ and now comes the worst part: clean-up. If you follow a few simple steps though, the job won’t be as tough as it first seems. Check out our tips below.
- Turn the burners to high and close the lid for 10 minutes to allow excess food to burn off the grill.
- Allow the grates to cool but while they’re still warm, use a grill scraper to get off any stuck food.
- Wipe the outside of the BBQ with warm soapy water to remove any splashes of fat or grease.
- To do a deeper clean of the grill itself, remove the grates and soak them in warm, soapy water and scrub them gently.
- Remember to empty and wash out the drip tray where all the excess grease is collected.
Are gas BBQs safe?
There’s always going to be an element of risk when using high heats and gas, so there are a few things to note to ensure you’re using them properly and keeping safe.
One common concern is gas leaks so make sure to check the gas hose for cracks or holes before using. You can also use the soapy water test – just apply it to the hose or any suspected cracks and wait to see if there are any bubbles. If there are no bubbles, it’s safe to use.
Cleaning is also key, as a build-up of excess fat can cause grease fires. Simply empty and wash out the drip tray after every few uses to keep on the safe side.
Finally, as with any BBQ, don’t use them indoors (unless the manufacturer states otherwise) or in enclosed spaces to avoid a build-up of carbon monoxide, and always make sure to read any safety recommendations in the manual.

The verdict: What is the best gas BBQ?
Our top pick right now is Weber Spirit E-310. With fantastic grilling power, impressive versatility, and easy-to-use controls, it is a great pick for those who love to grill.
However, if you’re looking for a more affordable buy, George Foreman’s 3 Burner BBQ is our experts' top buy under £250.
For those who want to take their BBQ skills on the road, Campingaz’ Attitude 2go Gas BBQ model is worth adding to your camping packing list.
