best in stock fans

We’ve had multiple heatwaves already this summer and we’re only in July. If you haven't managed to grab a fan or air cooler yet, you may be in the last chance saloon, as they're selling out very fast.

Thankfully, there are still some of the Good Housekeeping Institute's top tried and tested models in stock at Amazon. We’ve picked out all the models under £100 with quick delivery (where possible!), so you can keep cool over the next week without spending a fortune.

We've rigorously reviewed all the products below in our lab, measuring their air strength and speed, as well as checking sound levels and energy use. Our testers have also used them at home, in the same way you would, seeing whether they kept them comfortable as they worked, relaxed and tried to sleep.

These are the best fans and air coolers we recommend snapping up now to beat the heat. Note, we keep this article frequently updated, but stock is selling fast!

How we test

You’ll find a mix of different fans and air coolers below, but they’re all reviewed in a similar way. Our experts carry out three tests for each model to assess these key criteria.

  • Air strength – we try all the settings on each fan, measuring the air speed with an anemometer. We then work out the range of air speeds available and award top marks to those with the biggest range.
  • Noise level – we record the noise produced on both the lowest and highest settings to make sure it won’t be distracting while you work or keep you up at night!
  • Energy consumption – we run every fan and air cooler for three hours before we take an energy reading. We award higher marks to those that are more economical.

Once these tests are complete, our experts then get in a 30-degree room with the product for a minimum of half an hour, judging each cooler on how easy it is to use, how noisy it is, and whether the air flow is easy to direct.

Finally, we rate the ease of use, design and instructions, before awarding a final score out of 100. These are the best fans to buy now.

Mighty is in its name and it certainly proved to live up to it in testing. It's quite small and compact but delivers a strong cooling airflow with speeds up to 3m/s.

We liked the digital display that tells you the battery level and fan speed too. It's very easy to use and all the controls were responsive, earning a big thumbs up from our team.

Our only gripes were that the air flow was quite narrow and that it doesn't come with a neck strap. Otherwise, it's an excellent buy.

This handheld fan is our top pick for surviving the heatwave on the go. Granted, it’s on the pricier side for a handheld fan but it wowed our testers, so it should see you through a sweaty train journey.

It boasts 100 different speeds (seriously), which meant our experts had no issue getting comfortable in 30-degree heat. The lightweight design also comes with an attachable travel lanyard so you can go hands-free when you need to. The battery lasted three hours on the highest setting too!

Neck fans are a genius invention that allows you to stay cool on the go, without having your hands full. We’ve been seeing them everywhere recently and we get the appeal – our testers loved the compact design (as well as being able to carry their iced coffee while using it.

There are three wind speeds, with a gradual, but noticeable difference between each setting. The air strength was more like a gentle breeze than a strong wind, but the lightweight, intuitive design is worth investing in if you want to stay comfortable on the move.

This pedestal fan is a powerful option that will help keep you cool on sweltering summer days. It’s smart too, with voice recognition technology that doesn’t require WiFi, Bluetooth pairing or an app. Instead, just plug it in and say, “Hey fan, turn on”, and you’re good to go. We did find you have to say the commands loud and clear for it to work though.

The air speed reached 4.6 metres per second on high, providing a cool gust that kept us comfortable in 30-degree heat. The 90-degree oscillation also helps the air reach most corners of the room. It’s on the noisy side, so it won’t be the best pick for nighttime, but for quick daytime relief, it’s a sleek, smart buy.

You have everything you could need with this little handheld fan. There are five speeds to cycle through to help you get comfortable, a neck strap for cooling on the go, plus a base so you can stand it up on the table like a mini desk fan.

We found the on/off button quite small which might be tricky to press if you have large hands, but overall, we were impressed by this well-made, reliable fan.

Keeping cool at night will be much easier with this desk fan. Its lowest speed reaches 2.3m/s, which is more than strong enough to keep you cool, while its noise level only measured 42.1dB in the lab (similar to the noise level of a quiet library). There’s a 12-hour timer too, and it’s easy to move from room to room.

One thing to note is that there’s no remote control, so you’ll need to use the buttons on the base to adjust the settings. It doesn’t oscillate either, but you can tilt the head up to 180-degrees, which gives some level of flexibility in where the air flow reaches.

For strong, personal cooling, this is an excellent value buy.

  • High-quality design

Cons

  • Limited oscillation at 90-degrees

Score: 78/100

Delivery 14th August - 10th September

Slim and sleek, this is another tower fan that offers great value for money. It can be controlled via the fan, remote, or app and it was responsive when we switched between speeds and modes.

Speaking of which, there’s a sleep mode that gradually turns the fan off overnight, as well as eight speeds to cycle through, making it easy to find one that suits. If you opt for the higher speeds though, just note that our panel found it noisy and disruptive as the fan reached 75.1dB which is similar to the noise of a vacuum. Stick to the lower ones and it shouldn’t disturb you though, as the noise level measured at 44.4dB – much more reasonable!
