How we test mattress toppers

how we test mattress toppers
Alison Lynch

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we do some of the most in-depth testing of sleep products on the market. To find the best mattress toppers, we asked our panel of testers to trial them at home for a minimum of three weeks. They then rated their experience in forensic detail, judging them on the criteria that matters most. These include:

  • Comfort: How soft and plush the topper feels to lie on, night in, night out
  • Support: How well it cushions the body and helps keep their spine and joints aligned
  • Breathability: How well air flows through the topper to prevent overheating
  • Fit: How securely it stays in place overnight
  • Care: How easy both the topper and the cover are to clean and maintain

We also ask them to let us know if they'd recommend their topper to friends and family.

Our in-house experts also put each topper to the test in our lab, assessing how smooth they were under a bed sheet, how easy they are to secure to the mattress and how evenly distributed the filling is. They then collate all the feedback and data to award each product a final score out of 100.

Hybrid Essential Topper
Best mattress topper overall

Simba Hybrid Essential Topper

Pros

  • Smooth topper that supports the body well, rather than giving a sink-in feel
  • Well-constructed

Cons

  • If folding away for storage, you’ll need a spare pair of hands

Score: 93/100

Simba needs no introduction in the mattress topper world. Combining the same foam and springs that made its hybrid mattress so popular in our best mattress review, this topper breezed through testing, with our in-house team finding it "extremely comfortable and easy to fit".

When it came to the panel, they said the topper provided plenty of “extra comfort”. They even went as far to say it felt like they "had a whole new mattress". Another plus is that it can fit back in its box, unlike the brand's mattresses, which expand once unboxed, so it's easy to store if you need to.

Choose this mattress topper if: You want an easy-fit design that will provide both support and cushioning, giving your mattress a new lease of life.

The White Company Luxury White Down Topper - Double

Pros

  • Quiet to sleep on
  • Washable top layer

Cons

  • Very puffy on first use but this evens out after a few nights

Score: 93/100

Filled with two layers of goose down and feathers (which The White Company says are sourced from cruelty-free suppliers), this plump topper won our panel over with its “luxurious feel and weight”.

It fitted our mattresses securely and neatly, its filling was evenly distributed, and it plumped up easily when our testers made the bed again. Everyone would recommend it for a quality night’s sleep.

Choose this mattress topper if: You want a luxuriously plush down topper and don’t mind paying a premium for it.

Best bamboo mattress topper

Panda Hybrid Bamboo Mattress Topper

Pros

  • Comfortable and supportive for all sleep styles
  • Extremely breathable
  • High-quality, premium design

Cons

  • On the heavier side
  • Pricey

Score: 93/100

Like the Simba winner above, this Panda topper combines micro-springs (2,100 to be exact) with foam to deliver that new mattress feel. The cover is made from sustainably-sourced bamboo, which is naturally anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic, as well as being machine washable for ultimate ease.

Testers found the medium-firm base supportive and comfy to sleep on, with one saying: “It’s like floating on a cloud,” and another commenting: “It’s been an absolute life changer for me.” With a BioCell foam layer and a ventilated mesh border, it was a big hit with the hot sleepers on our panel, too. Note, its chunky construction means it’s heavy to move and will add a fair amount of height to your mattress.

Choose this mattress topper if: You want something breathable to help keep you cooler at night.

On a tighter budget? Consider the brand’s original Bamboo Mattress Topper, a foam design that scored 89/100 in our tests and is £139.95 for a double.

Silentnight Airmax 800 Mattress Topper - Double

Pros

  • Fitted the mattress perfectly
  • Excellent washing instructions
  • Secure elastic straps kept it in place
  • 100% of panellists would recommend it to others

Cons

  • May be too bulky for smaller washing machines

Score: 92/100

When it came to fit, this topper ticked every box. It was true to size, sat flat on the mattress, and stayed put thanks to its strong elastic straps – even after a good bounce.

Though some panellists expected a bit more cushioning from the topper’s 8cm depth (noting that it compresses significantly once laid on), they found it smooth and soft to the touch, with no scratchy stitching or seams.

The air mesh sides were a standout feature, too, helping to improve airflow and reduce overheating at night. The topper is machine washable, which is a major plus, though worth noting it may be too bulky for standard-sized machines. If your drum is smaller than 10kg, you might need a trip to the dry cleaner.

Choose this mattress topper if: You’re a hot sleeper but are shopping on a budget.

Simba Hybrid Mattress Topper

Pros

  • More springs than the Hybrid essential, making it great for maximum support
  • Topper cover is machine washable

Cons

  • Accompanying care instructions are sparse

Score: 91/100

Another hybrid option from Simba, this also excelled in our in-house testing and went down a treat with our panel, who found its supportive design offered a comfortable and firm night’s sleep.

It came up slightly bigger than our mattress, but this didn't impact sleep for our panellists, and its straps are a convenient length, making fitting it easy. If we’re being fussy, we’d say it could be hard to store due to its thickness and size, but equally, this is what makes it so comfortable.

It’s also worth mentioning its sustainability credentials; it’s made in the UK from recyclable materials, using foam that’s free from polluting heavy metals, dyes and chemicals – even more reason to sleep easy.

Choose this mattress topper if: You prefer a firmer, more supportive surface than that ‘sink-in’ feeling.

Pros

  • Easy to fit onto your mattress and secure once in place

Cons

  • Fit comes up tight meaning the very edges of your mattress may not be covered

Score: 89/100

If you love keeping snug in bed, but don't want a huge (and often heavy) winter duvet, this topper will be for you. Not only did it make our testers' beds comfier, but it's also cleverly self heating thanks to its heat-reflecting foil and thermal lining. In fact, it adds a whopping 7.5 togs of extra warmth to the bed.

Testers found it nice and cosy and praised the filling's even distribution. It's on the softer side though, so may not suit if you need firmer support. But, it's hypoallergenic, machine washable and folds easily for storage in the summer.

Choose this mattress topper if: You tend to run cold at night.

Key specifications

Pros

  • Supportive foam design
  • Removable machine washable cover

Cons

  • Straps may not be long enough for deep mattresses

Score: 89/100

The cover on this memory foam mattress topper is made using sustainably-sourced bamboo and it's machine washable, naturally anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic. Testers found it comfortable and responsive to sleep on, with the foam moulding pleasantly to their bodies.

It also proved quiet at night, so won’t be the cause of any wriggling-induced arguments, and the adjustable straps mean it fits the bed nicely, although they weren’t quite long enough to stop an occasional corner coming loose.

Panellists didn’t find it that breathable, so if you tend to wake up feeling hot, scroll on. Otherwise, it’s a high-quality design that improved the quality of our testers' sleep.

Choose this mattress topper if: You like the idea of a hypoallergenic bamboo design but prefer memory foam and don’t get hot at night.

Dusk Supreme Goose Down Mattress Topper

Pros

  • Smooth topper with an evenly distributed filling
  • Comes with a storage bag

Cons

  • Slightly fiddlier to put on the mattress than some

Score: 89/100

Are you after that delicious sink-in feeling? Dusk has created just that with its clever two-tiered topper, which has a top section full of goose down and a bottom layer made up of fluffy feathers to ensure the "supreme" comfort its name promises. Our panel confirmed its snugness, praising the pleasingly even distribution of feathers.

It's light to move around, and even comes with a handy storage bag. Our testers also noted that it fits almost perfectly over the bed, with just a little of the mattress peeking out. But given its plush softness, it goes without saying this isn't for those who need a bit more support.

Choose this mattress topper if: You want that ‘sink-in’ soft feeling.

We also tested Dusk's more affordable Anti-Allergy Feels Like Down Mattress Topper, which scored 88/100. It offers a down-like layer of comfort, combining a synthetic polyester filling with a breathable cotton cover.

Pros

  • Comfortable, even foam filling
  • Breathable for all our panellists

Cons

  • Be careful when washing as there was some slight shrinkage

Score: 88/100

At 9cm thick, this should give a real boost to your mattress. It doesn’t have any straps, but our testers found a sheet helped it stay in place. It slipped a little for our panel at home, but nothing that a quick rejig come morning wouldn’t solve.

And, this didn’t stop the topper from being a hit on the sleep front – everyone said that they would recommend it to others, praising its sink-in yet supportive feel. One even said they’re “definitely sleeping more comfortably”. It's just what a tired mattress (and individual!) needs.

Slumberdown Sleep Soundly Anti Allergy Mattress Topper

Pros

  • Washes without any change in quality and dries quickly
  • Smooth, comfortable surface

Cons

  • Thinner than other toppers

Score: 88/100

For premium comfort at an affordable price, look to this Slumberdown topper with a hypoallergenic design that should keep sneezing at bay. Our panel found it delivers a soft, breathable boost to your bed. Testers were impressed with its overall quality, and while it’s not the thickest topper you could buy, everyone found it added a good level of comfort.

It washed well too. In fact, the only real niggle our testers had is that it doesn’t have any straps to secure it to your mattress. While this wasn’t a problem for everyone, if you tend to move a lot in your sleep, then it’s worth noting as it may not stay put. Overall though, it’s a good pick for revitalising a tired mattress without spending a small fortune.

This slice of fluffy fibre (made in part with recycled polyester) will bring a layer of soft comfort to your bed. It fitted our testers’ mattresses perfectly, and easily slipped into a 9kg washing machine (with minimal shrinkage), so you can enjoy fresh, snug nights.

Panellists were divided when it came to the topper’s breathability, with some finding it on the toasty side – this means you may want to pack it away over summer if you run hot. But otherwise, most liked its soft support and quiet design – and would recommend it to others.

Cons

Score: 87/100

Any sleep product with ‘hotel’ in its name will instantly grab our attention (given the association with luxury) and this hollowfibre topper’s quality feel stood up to our rigorous inspections. Our panel loved its good fit and declared it “pure comfort to sleep on”. The filling is evenly distributed too, and when needed, testers found it easy to plump up with a quick shake.

Elastic straps mean it stayed in place on top of our mattresses even if the odd one pinged loose from time to time, and while testers found it warm, they didn’t overheat. Our panel found it washed well too.

Pros

  • Well-constructed design
  • Customisable support

Cons

  • Slight foam smell that took a while to dissipate

Score: 87/100

For sleepers who chop and change their preferences regularly, or often have guests who like different levels of support, you probably don't want to buy (and store!) two different toppers. Thankfully, Emma's got your back – literally.

This is Emma's entry level topper, but it’s got a lot going for it. With two different sides, it offers adjustable firmness – soft on one and firm on the other. The panel liked the fact you can personalise the topper further by opening the cover and removing some of the foam, which is unique to this topper.

Testers found it "very comfortable" with "good support", and noted how well made it was. When it came to smoothness, there weren't any lumps or bumps lurking either. It fits the mattress very well, but its lack of straps makes it less secure.

Choose this mattress topper if: It’s going on top of a guest bed, as you can adjust the foam to suit sleepers who with different support preferences.

Cons

  • Was marginally smaller than advertised, but nothing too noticeable once in place

Score: 86/100

This “plush, soft and cushioned” microfibre topper made one panellist’s mattress feel like “a fluffy cloud". Testers also found it breathable, quiet and smooth to sleep on.

As well as its hypoallergenic filling, it has another feature that will make it well suited to people with allergies: its two-layered design. You can unzip them to make washing easier, which means you can keep all your bedding fresh.

Pros

  • Comfortable with noticeable cushioning
  • Gel-infused layer helps regulate temperature
  • Breathable, machine-washable Tencel cover with anti-slip backing

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Can be heavy and awkward to manoeuvre solo
  • May require deeper fitted sheets due to extra height

Score: 86/100

With cooling gel beads and a soft, supportive surface, this memory foam mattress topper is designed with total comfort in mind. Offering an instant upgrade to older mattresses, it helped keep hot sleepers cool throughout the night, while the lightly padded, removable cover garnered high praise from the panel.

Testers loved the way it gently contoured to their body, too, with no lumps or bumps in sight, making it a winner for all sleep styles. Fitting couldn’t be simpler; the topper unpacked with ease and slotted neatly onto our mattress, with no awkward overhang or gaps, and the anti-slip backing held securely during our bounce test, too. The foam, seams, and zips held up well after washing and, while refitting the cover post-wash was a bit of a wrestle (as is common with foam toppers), it was a rare faff for an otherwise low-maintenance product.

Yes, it’s on the pricier side, but with a 30-day trial, you can try it risk-free.

How to choose a mattress topper

With different materials, thicknesses and firmness levels to choose from, finding the right topper for you can feel overwhelming. Here’s what to consider before shopping.

Sleep style: Consider whether you sleep on your side, back or front, as this can affect the level of cushioning and support you need. Side sleepers may prefer soft, thick toppers for support and pressure relief, while front sleepers should look for firmer, thinner options to keep the spine aligned. Back sleepers, meanwhile, often benefit from medium support.

Material: Memory foam moulds to the shape of your body and offers great support if you toss and turn at night, but some people find it too hot and it can be expensive. Feather or down toppers tend to feel cooler, but they can also be pricey and usually need regular fluffing.

If you struggle with allergies, try a microfibre or hollowfibre topper. These more affordable materials are often treated with anti-allergy chemicals. Just note, they can trap heat and have a tendency to flatten quickly.

Firmness: Think about what your current mattress is missing. A softer topper can add extra cushioning and a plush feel, while a firmer one can help with stability and support.

Temperature regulation: If you tend to run hot at night, look for breathable materials such as wool, gel-infused foam, latex or bamboo, which are designed to dissipate heat.

Wool, in particular, is an excellent year-round option. This natural, biodegradable material keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer, although it can be on the heavy side.

Care: It's worth checking whether the cover is removable and machine washable. This makes it much easier to keep your topper fresh.

How many inches thick should my mattress topper be?

Toppers can range from thin slithers to 7.5cm wedges. In general, a thickness of up to 5cm should suffice. It's also worth considering how thick your chosen mattress topper will make your mattress, as you might need to buy bigger bed sheets!

What's the difference between a mattress topper and a mattress protector?

Put simply, the best mattress protectors protect your mattress from stains, dead skin cells and dust mites. Parents often use them to protect children's beds from night-time accidents, too.

Toppers, meanwhile, are all about comfort. They can make a mattress higher, softer, firmer, hotter or cooler, depending on the type you buy, but they won't protect it from spills or allergens.

If you're using both, put the topper on first.

How to clean a mattress topper

Clean your mattress topper as often as your bedsheets to keep it bacteria-free. Check the label, but most mattress toppers can go in the washing machine. If possible, air dry it after cleaning, or tumble dry it on the lowest temperature.

Do you put a fitted sheet over a mattress topper?

Yes, mattress toppers are designed to sit on top of your mattress and underneath your fitted sheet. The sheet will help keep the topper in place and protect it from daily wear.

Think about how much extra depth your topper will add to your mattress, as thicker toppers can make your bed taller. If your sheets feel tight or keep slipping off the edges, you may need to switch to deeper sheets to ensure a snug, secure fit.

What topper makes a firm mattress feel softer?

A memory foam mattress topper is a great way to add a softer, more cushioned layer to your mattress, as they mould to the contours of your body, providing relief across key pressure points. The winning one on our list is the Panda Bamboo Mattress Topper, which proved to be soft as well as comfortable.

Will a topper fix a bad mattress or is it just delaying the inevitable?

It depends on the age and quality of your existing mattress. If you have a mattress that’s 10 years old or more, it’s probably time for a refresh. However, a mattress topper can help add an extra layer of cushioning support, to extend the life of your mattress or make it softer or firmer, depending on the design you choose. They’re also much more affordable than investing in a brand-new mattress.

Is memory foam worth it or will I just overheat?

Some memory foam mattresses or toppers can cause overheating for hot sleepers, as the dense construction can trap body heat, reducing air flow. If you’re prone to overheating, look for a breathable design, such as the Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress Topper, which has an inner core with an open structure foam that encourages air flow.

But it’s worth noting that many new memory foam products are designed with cooling tech, as proved by our best cooling topper, the Origin Contour Mattress Topper. It’s made from extra-comfortable, body-moulding memory foam, but with an inner layer of cooling gel beads and a temperature-regulating Tempur cover to keep things breezy.

Wool vs synthetic – is the price difference justified?

Wool mattress toppers tend to be more expensive, but they do boast a range of benefits, as wool is naturally temperature-regulating and sweat-wicking, as well as being hypoallergenic. As a renewable resource, they’re also a more sustainable choice too. Synthetic mattress toppers, meanwhile, are generally more affordable and offer effective comfort and support, so it really comes down to personal preference.

This is an image

What is the best mattress topper?

While we have three mattress toppers that scored 93/100, our overall winner is Simba’s Hybrid Essential Topper. Its combination of foam and springs makes it a good option for most people – it offers support and cushioning without too much of that ‘sink-in’ feeling.

If you're after down or something plusher, then the best mattress topper for you is The White Company’s Luxury White Down Topper. And if you’re a hot sleeper, choose Panda’s Hybrid Bamboo Mattress Topper.

All three are quite expensive though, so if you don’t want to splash out on a mattress topper (especially if it's only destined for a spare bed or sofa bed), then we recommend our budget pick, Slumberdown’s Anti Allergy Mattress Topper, for under £25.
