The compact SUV market is packed with practical, family-friendly options, but not all carry the kind of identity and panache that Jeep does. Known for its rugged heritage and off-road capability, Jeep has long appealed to drivers who want a vehicle that feels as adventurous as it is functional. With the redesigned 2026 Cherokee, the brand is aiming to strike a balance between that iconic toughness and the everyday comfort modern families expect.

As a product tester at the Good Housekeeping Institute and a mom who regularly tests vehicles with my family, I’ve driven all types of SUVs over the past year alone. I recently had the chance to put the new Cherokee through its paces on a trip to Vermont, loading it up with everything from baby gear to ski equipment. After spending real time behind the wheel, here’s everything you need to know about this versatile, do-it-all SUV.

First Impressions: A Classic Jeep, Reimagined

When I think of Jeep, I think of rugged adventures and driving with the windows down. I think of the “cool kids” in high school. Even though this was my first time getting behind the wheel of a Jeep, it’s a brand I’ve been familiar with my entire life (thank you, Jurassic Park). Jeep has a strong reputation and identity, and it’s part of its appeal.

The new Jeep Cherokee stays true to its identity with a sleek, boxy exterior. It looks like a car you can take off the beaten path, all while offering the modern amenities you’d want inside a family-friendly SUV. It’s certainly not as sporty as the Jeep Wrangler or the Ford Bronco, but it can handle some light off-roading. But if that’s not what you’re looking for, that’s totally OK too.

Driving Experience: Smooth, Confident, and Everyday-Ready

All-wheel drive is standard on every trim of the Jeep Cherokee, and it’s hybrid-only. When we took it up to Vermont, our drive felt smooth and reliable. While the car can handle some light trails, it’s mainly designed for daily driving, commuting, and family comfort. I enjoyed cruising in it down winding New England roads and paved highways.

I really liked the feel of the steering wheel, which features a square design that’s both attractive and pleasant to hold. I also appreciated the volume control buttons located behind the steering wheel, and I found the infotainment system intuitive to use. My partner and I both loved the haptic touch controls for HVAC located just below the screen, which made adjusting climate control super easy.

The rear row was comfortable, and we had all the space we needed for our convertible car seat as well as baby toys, food, and accessories. We did have to scooch the seat in front of the car seat up, though, rendering it less spacious for any tall passengers sitting in that seat.

Cargo & Space: Practical, But Not Roomy Enough for All

The Jeep Cherokee is an SUV, but it’s not the biggest SUV on the market. It’s reasonable for a small family of three like mine, but any larger and I could see space becoming tight. Once all the baby gear, ski gear, and food were packed inside for our road trip, along with the dog, I felt a bit squeezed. If you need to optimize space, I recommend purchasing a rooftop cargo carrier to store some of your gear on top of the car. We didn’t have one at the time of our trip, so I spent a few hours in the rear row with skis next to my head.

Final Verdict: Who the 2026 Jeep Cherokee Is Best For

If you or your teens have their heart set on a Jeep, then the 2026 Jeep Cherokee can be a perfect SUV. While it’s likely not spacious enough for very large families, it offers enough cargo room and comfort for a couple or a small family of three or four. It sports a modern, rugged design and can handle a variety of terrain, but it really shines on smooth, paved roads and during daily errands and commutes. It’s a nice combination of sporty and practical, but if you’re looking for a true off-roading vehicle or a roomier car, then you might be better off considering another Jeep.
