Your everyday backpack is a crucial part of your daily routine: It needs to hold everything you need while staying organized so each item is easy to find and it needs to look sleek too. The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab put 40 different styles to the test before making these recommendations. We measured fabric durability and conducted packing tests in the Lab and shared backpacks with male testers who used them during their commutes and travels and at work to give their feedback on comfort, ease of packing, style, and more.

Pros

  • Comfortable padded straps and back panel
  • Convenient organizational features
  • Removable sternum strap helps distribute weight

Cons

  • Limited colorways

The Authority Laptop Backpack combines quality construction with high-functioning organizational features that let you store workday essentials with ease. Not only does the laptop sleeve fit models up to 17 inches wide, but there are internal organizers for smaller items like pens and your phone, plus a main compartment and a side pocket for your water bottle. Our pros like that the bottom section can be cinched up, thanks to the compression straps.

You will appreciate the padded straps and back panel for comfort when carrying a full backpack. We also like the removable sternum strap that gives you the option to better distribute the weight. Good Housekeeping Test Engineer Alec Scherma tested the Authority Laptop Backpack and found it comfortable to wear even for a long time. While he wished it was a bit more spacious when traveling, he noted that it "fits on my suitcase pretty well when I am traveling with it, and goes underneath the airplane seats." It’s only available in four dark neutrals.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Includes external USB port with a cable
  • Anti-theft pocket for personal items

Cons

  • Not the most stylish backpack

This Matein backpack has tens of thousands of Amazon reviews and was a most-bought product by our readers ahead of the back-to-school season. It comes with an impressive amount of design features but is still budget-friendly at under $40—it’s currently just $20.

The backpack has designated pockets for your laptop, phone, and pens, plus a key fob hook and an external USB port with a cable for charging devices. Our analysts appreciate the padded straps for comfort as well as the hidden anti-theft pocket and luggage strap to use while traveling. It may not be the most aesthetically pleasing backpack on the market, but for its price and features, we can overlook that.

Pros

  • Comfortable to carry
  • Roomy interior with a built-in laptop sleeve
  • Testers liked that the bag was compact when commuting

Cons

  • Plain appearance

The right bag can make or break your commute. This lightweight pick from Osprey, a brand known for its hiking backpacks, is impressively comfortable to carry and has ample organizational features to keep the interior organized. The bag also has compression straps, so it stays snug to your body and doesn’t bump into people on a crowded train or bus. It has a built-in laptop sleeve that can accommodate 14-inch laptops and comfort features like padded shoulder straps and chest and hip straps to help distribute the pack’s weight. Don’t be fooled by its compactness—it has ample storage space and many testers commented that it held more than they expected. It includes two side water bottle holders too.

“This backpack is perfect for the train and subway because it fits my laptop, water bottle, lunch, wallet, headphones, AirPods, Apple charger, book, notebook, pencils, deodorant, mints, and a bunch of other random things I carry,” shared one consumer tester. “And then I just tighten all the straps and adjust the bag so that it's as compact as possible, which I really like for standing in a crowded subway.” Testers highlighted that this bag works great for everyday use and also on hikes, although some found the appearance a bit plain.

Apex 4.0 22L Premium Laptop Backpack

Pros

  • Sleek design
  • Laptop and luggage sleeves
  • Convenient zippered pockets

Cons

  • Challenging to get items out of the bottom of the bag

We named the Apex the best backpack for work in our latest evaluation of the best laptop backpacks. It has a super sleek design that features a faux leather trim. The backpack also has a padded 17-inch laptop sleeve and multiple pockets including a zippered pocket in the shoulder strap that is ideal for stowing a commuter pass or work ID. Plus, a luggage sleeve makes it easy to use this backpack as your personal item during travel. The bag only opens two-thirds of the way around, so some consumer testers found it tough to grab items at the bottom of the bag.

At nearly $280, it isn’t an inexpensive backpack, but it isn't our most expensive pick on this list and may be a worthwhile purchase if you want to invest in a work backpack that will hold up over time. Another plus is that the outer shell is designed to be water resistant, protecting your items even in rainy weather.

We have included Cotopaxi products in various product guides including the best daypacks and men's rain jackets. When we tested this travel backpack in the Lab, it fit everything in our standard packing test and then some.

Its mesh compartments make it easy to see what you put inside and we appreciate the breathable mesh back. It has chest and hip straps as well as padding in the shoulder straps for comfort. Not only does the backpack have a water-resistant coating, but it also comes with a rain cover. These features come at a heftier price of over $200.

The pack comes with a laptop sleeve so you can easily bring your tech on trips. Our consumer tester liked the color-blocked design and found the backpack was spacious enough to fit everything he needed for a two-night camping trip. "I fit a sleeping bag, some tent equipment, clothes, some toiletries, and food and water," he said, adding that the mesh fabric allowed for nice airflow.

Pros

  • Outperformed pricier backpacks
  • Expandable design to 40 L
  • Compression straps
  • Includes two packing cubes and a shoe pouch

Cons

  • Not super fashionable

Our analysts in the Textile Lab often recommend Bagsmart pieces because of the brand’s affordable pricing that doesn't correlate to lower performance. In fact, this travel backpack outperformed pricier styles in our most recent test of the best carry-on backpacks.

It is expandable so you can alternate between a 25- to 40-liter bag as needed and the compression straps allow you to fit the most, while cutting down on bulk. The backpack boasts interior and exterior zippered compartments as well as two packing cubes, a shoe pouch, and a laptop sleeve. Our consumer tester found the bag "incredibly spacious" and added, "I really pushed it to its limits but was always able to fit what I wanted inside."

While it may not be the most stylish carry-on available on the market, when it comes to a top-performing carry-on backpack you can take on your adventures without spending too much, this is our best pick.

Borealis Commuter Laptop Backpack
Credit: The North Face

Pros

  • Can fit a lot without becoming uncomfortable
  • Fleece-lined zippered pocket for glasses and a front bungee system holds a jacket
  • Held up to abrasion and water-resistance tests

Cons

  • Some testers wish the shoulder straps were thicker

When I was in high school, The North Face was probably the most popular backpack because its basic design lends itself to being versatile well beyond the school's doors. The Borealis Commuter Laptop Backpack in particular impressed our pros with how much it can hold while still being comfortable to wear.

It has a separate padded compartment for your laptop as well as a fleece-lined zippered pocket for glasses and a front bungee system to hold a sweatshirt or jacket. Consumer testers reported that the padded shoulder straps as well as the chest and waist straps helped make the backpack comfortable to carry—even when stuffed.

In Lab tests, the backpack's exterior fabric held up to abrasion and water-resistance tests, which makes the around-$100 price tag all the more worth it. Our tester appreciated the well-designed compartments, saying, "I love the side pockets built into the interior; they're the perfect size for my water bottle and umbrella.” While they liked using it for commuting and as a personal item, they wished the shoulder straps were a bit thicker.

How we test backpacks for men

double line break

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles, Paper and Apparel Lab, we evaluate all kinds of men's and women's backpacks and bags from the best tote bags to garment bags.

When testing backpacks in the Lab, our experts use specialized equipment to evaluate fabric durability. Pros also analyze the pack's construction, including the strap design and other support features. We then send products to our consumer testers who use the backpacks in their daily lives and have them report back on comfort, appearance, and more.

What to look for when shopping for the best men's backpacks

double line break

✔️ Spacious capacity to hold what you need: Under 20 liters is a good size for an everyday backpack, while somewhere between 20 and 30 liters gives you more wiggle room to use the backpack for a weekend trip. More than 30 liters makes for a sizable backpack that can handle longer vacations. Check the listed dimensions and capacity to make sure the pack is large enough to fit everything you need.

✔️ Comfortable design for all-day wear: The best way to find a comfortable backpack is to look for support features that will make carrying the load easier. Our pros recommend padded shoulder straps to help prevent back pain. Chest and hip straps will better distribute weight and help with back, neck, or shoulder pain.

✔️ An organized interior: Regardless of how you plan to use your backpack, whether for commuting, traveling, or hiking, you want a pack that will help keep your essentials organized. Look for features like a padded laptop sleeve, accessible front pockets, water bottle holders, and interior pockets.

✔️ A sleek look that’s office-ready: When looking for an office backpack, opt for materials like leather or sturdy synthetics that look more professional than more casual alternatives.
