Being a naturally curly girl, I have a complicated relationship with blowouts. My hair is prone to frizz and is known to revert at the slightest hint of humidity in the air, so I typically reserve straightening my hair for colder, drier months in order to ensure it will last. In addition to that, I’m sort of a lazy natural—any styling that occupies too much of my time or feels overly complicated is something that I typically opt out of and lately, that’s included straightening my hair.
When I learned about the Marc Anthony Strictly Curls Ultimate Blowout Hair Spray, I was intrigued to find out if it could be the answer to all of my hair-straightening woes. From the videos from various creators that were scattered up and down my TikTok FYP, it appeared that the blowout spray could transform my mind-of-their-own curls into a sleek, straight style that could possibly last me through a hot summer day or getting caught in the rain, so I decided to give it a try.
I’ve tried quite a few blowout sprays before that never truly tamed my strands. It always seemed that the results, while highly praised by those with straighter textures, would fall short of defying humidity when it came to my tight curls. But what stood out to me about this Marc Anthony product was that it was formulated with curls in mind. According to the brand, a biomimetic polymer shield, which imitates your hair’s natural moisture barrier, attaches itself to each strand in order to smooth your hair cuticle and block humidity from creating frizz.
My honest thoughts
I followed my typical wash routine before applying the Strictly Curls Ultimate Blowout Hair Spray. After washing and conditioning, I patted my hair dry (still leaving it slightly damp) before parting my hair into four sections in preparation for the spray. According to the directions, it’s best to shake the bottle before you apply the product, so I shook it up and attempted to press down on the pump applicator.
My first impression was that the pump was a bit stiff. I had to press it kind of hard in order to get any product to come out the first time. After a few tries, it finally sprayed in a fine mist, which I then applied generously throughout the length of my hair.
I applied it one section, and then worked the product through my strands with my fingers, later blowdrying that same section using a round brush attachment, making sure to apply tension (this is also recommended in the instructions on the bottle).
After completing the first section, I was super impressed with how quickly my hair straightened and how shiny it appeared just after blowdrying. I continued the same process for my entire head, then finished it off with a flat iron. Sealing my hair with the additional heat revealed a sleek style without any frizz or flyaways, and it remained perfectly flat throughout the day (my hair can sometimes begin to revert or appear puffy after a few hours of straightening in humid conditions).
How long do results last?
I was able to get about a week and a half wear with my hair straightened using this product, which was a major feat for me (I can usually only go about five to seven days max). Within the first few days my hair remained, sleek, straight, and shiny. Towards the end of the week I noticed minimal frizz, but it wasn’t anything a little hairspray couldn’t help. My hair was able to weather two 90 degree days with humidity, and a rainstorm. I even received a comment from another curly girl that I was “brave” to have my hair straightened under these conditions, but the spray did not fail me.
Going into the second week I did notice my hair didn’t look as shiny and my edges began to frizz, which could have been due to how I wrapped my hair. But all in all the results lasted me well.
Is Marc Anthony Strictly Curls Ultimate Blowout Hair Spray worth it?
At under $13, this blowout spray has an amazing price point for what it was able to achieve with my hair. I’ve tried more expensive sprays that promised to prevent frizz that inevitably fell short in humid climates. I loved how I was able to apply a good amount of product and my hair never felt sticky or weighed down.
Plus, after sealing my hair with a flat iron I didn’t experience frizz or my hair reverting for over a week—and this was still true in 90 degree weather with humidity and during a rainstorm (though I was also using an umbrella). Overall, I would say that the Marc Anthony Strictly Curls Ultimate Blowout Hair Spray is definitely worth it.
