food52 blue & white stripe picnic basket

Pros

  • Removable lid can serve as small tabletop
  • Spacious interior
  • Traditional aesthetic and shape

Cons

  • Not padded or insulated
  • Wooden lid may be prone to splinters

This traditional picnic basket from Picnic Time is cottagecore at its finest. A striped fabric liner adds preppy flair to the classic basket shape, though it doesn't offer padding or insulation. But our experts say the spacious interior can fit an insulated bag big enough to hold a wine bottle and non-perishable items. We also appreciate that you can remove the liner for easy cleaning if you spill some jelly or juice.

A wooden lid provides coverage on the way to your picnic destination, and you can even use it as a makeshift tabletop. However, we found that the edges of the lid were prone to breaking or splintering. Velcro straps secure the lid, but you can also remove it entirely. Whether you want to keep the lid off and display the items you packed or use the basket as a centerpiece in your home, this picnic basket has versatility that improves its overall value.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Folds flat for easy storage
  • Insulated aluminum foil interior

Cons

  • Some shoppers experienced leakage

Picnic baskets can be downright expensive, but this collapsible basket is under $25 and more than capable of being a sandwich toter. You can choose from a medium or large size, and 10 colors and patterns, from stripes to geometric prints.

We appreciate its capacity and insulated aluminum-foil interior, which keeps perishables cool or cooked food warm. Soft padding on the handle makes it more comfortable to hold. Plus, this basket can fold down for storage when not in use. The brand claims the basket features a leakproof lining, but some online reviewers still experienced leaks.

Promenade Picnic Tote for 2

Pros

  • Comes with glasses, plates, and flatware for two
  • Spacious with a canvas mid-section
  • Can personalize with a monogram

Cons

  • Interior isn't insulated

If you're looking for something easy to tote, this stylish canvas tote is the one for you. It features a sturdy wicker bottom that helps it keep its shape when you set it down. The basket has enough room to hold all your favorite snacks and beverages, and the brand claims you can fit a blanket inside, too! We like that it comes with two wine glasses, plates, forks, knives, and spoons, making it a great all-in-one buy for cute dates in the park. While its interior isn't insulated, you can probably fit a separate insulated bag inside. For an extra fee, you can add an embroidered monogram to make it feel like it's made just for you.

Williams Sonoma Bridgerton Picnic Basket

Pros

  • Padded interior with a stylish vintage design
  • Lots of dining accessories, including a cheese board
  • Comes with a matching blanket

Cons

  • Much more expensive than our other picks

This picnic basket comes equipped with almost everything else you'll need to have a truly posh picnic.

The interior padding is made from a gorgeous floral fabric that also makes up the napkins, an insulated pouch, and a blanket that straps onto the side. We appreciate the cheese board's durable acacia wood and the ornate details on the plates' rims. The ends of the flatware also have a vintage flair, and we like that this set includes a separate cheese knife. However, our kitchen experts noted that the knife is a little flimsy and top-heavy.

This picnic basket is the most expensive pick on our list at just under $300. While it includes tons of accessories, it's not the most budget-friendly. But if you're looking to splurge, this is definitely the basket to choose.

Pros

  • Padded interior; ties closed at the top
  • Two sets of handles for two ways to carry
  • Can be used as a beach bag or handbag

Cons

  • Not a lot of interior organization

Don't bother lugging around a bigger picnic basket than you need. For solo picnics or dates, a small basket like this one does the trick. The interior is padded for an extra layer of protection, and we love how you can tie the striped liner closed at the top. The thick, navy straps feel good on the shoulder or in the hand and offer a nice contrast to the woven seagrass.

One downside is that there is only one small interior pocket for a phone or keys. Everything else has to go in the main compartment, which could make organization trickier. But a major upside is that this Parisian-inspired basket could easily double as a beach bag or even an everyday tote.

Carmel Roll Top Picnic Backpack Cooler

Pros

  • Protective faux-leather on the bottom
  • Insulated interior is designed to be water-resistant
  • Plates are made of recycled materials

Cons

  • Hook is a little hard to open and close

If you're planning a hike with a lunch break at the summit, a picnic backpack will make carrying your food and drink easier on the way up. This one has a durable faux-leather bottom that can rest on the ground, and the brand claims the insulated interior is water-resistant. We like how the roll top expands to accommodate more snacks, and the magnetic closure is easy to open and close.

The front pocket stores the included stainless steel utensils and two plates made from recycled plant fiber. It also comes with two glass water bottles with bamboo lids, which are nice enough to use separately from the backpack. Our testers found the backpack comfortable to hold and easy to adjust, but the clasp hook was a little hard to clip and unclip.

Wicker Picnic Basket Set for 4

Pros

  • Includes a lot for the price
  • Plates are well-sized
  • Insulated main compartment

Cons

  • Picnic blanket isn't a soft material

This all-in-one picnic kit (minus the food, of course) offers a lot of value for the price. The handcrafted basket comes stocked with stainless steel knives, forks, and spoons as well as wine glasses, plates, and napkins that match the striped interior. We like that the 7-inch plates are made of durable melamine that's tough to break. We also like that the main compartment is insulated.

One online shopper said, "The basket seems pretty sturdy and was able to hold a decent amount of weight without issues." Another noted that the included blanket feels more like a tarp.

Pros

  • Silverware is gold-plated
  • Chic briefcase design with insulated section
  • Includes dining set for four

Cons

  • Heavy

Honeycomb fabric elevates the black wicker of this basket, and the gold touches on the straps and buckles are the cherry on top. Matching gold-plated silverware adds to the luxe feel, though we noticed that it scratches easily. It also comes with four ceramic plates and a bottle opener. The four wine glasses and napkins are great to have, too, although we wish they were a bit sturdier. You can fit a wine bottle in the insulated section, plus plenty of other perishables to keep them cool. Note that it's the heaviest basket on our list, and it lacks a shoulder strap.

What to consider when shopping for the best picnic basket

double line break

✔️ Material: While wicker and willow may be the first materials that come to mind when you think of a picnic basket, we've included baskets made of other materials, too. Wicker gives you a traditional look, and these baskets often have a cotton or polyester liner. But there are other styles made of polyester or canvas on the exterior that may better insulate food. Some baskets feature faux leather detailing on buckles and straps.

✔️ Style: A traditional basket typically has one or two large compartments and a curved handle at the top. They're cute but may be cumbersome to carry long distances. You can also find picnic basket backpacks, totes, and other zippered bags that may be more comfortable to carry.

✔️ Features: When choosing the best picnic basket for you, it's important to consider additional features. For example, some baskets have an insulated liner to help keep perishables at the right temperature. Other styles may have a buckle or lock on the top or a zipper or magnetic closure. Interior pockets and zippered compartments are nice to have for keeping items organized.

✔️ Accessories: Some baskets come with accessories that, while nice to have, may increase the price. We've included baskets that have dining sets for two or four people. In addition to plates, flatware, and wine glasses, some picnic baskets include a cheese board, a corkscrew, napkins, and a blanket.

What to pack in a picnic basket

double line break

Food, of course! But you'll want to be conscious of how many items your basket can handle. "I recommend packing lighter items in a picnic basket so that it doesn't weigh down your basket too much," says Kitchen & Cooking Lab Reviews Analyst Eva Bleyer. Consider transferring wine to an insulated bottle to maintain its temperature and ditch the heavy glass bottle. "Store prepped food in lightweight food containers, so you don't have to prep anything on your picnic," says Bleyer. We also suggest packing a garbage bag so you don't have to carry trash home.

If you plan to bring cheeses, sandwiches, or salads to your picnic, Bleyer recommends choosing a basket with insulation. But if your favorite basket isn't insulated, fear not. You can pack a separate insulated bag or lunch box and toss in an ice pack as needed.
