How we choose the best swim trunks for men

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab, our pros evaluate almost every kind of swimwear you can shop, from bikinis and tankinis to one-pieces and athletic suits. When selecting the best swim trunks for men, we tapped our staff for personal favorites as well as researched best-selling trunks from brands we have previously tested in other categories. To consolidate our list (because there are a lot of trunks out there in the wide open sea), we consulted tester notes and read through online reviews to see which trunks are worth buying.
What to look for when shopping for the best men's swim trunks

✔️ Material: All of the above swim trunks are made of a synthetic fiber such as polyester or nylon, while some also have a stretch fiber like elastane or spandex. A synthetic fiber drys quickly and is durable enough to last multiple swim seasons. "The synthetic materials are more likely to resist fading and wear from exposure to chlorine, UV rays and saltwater too," says Constantine. Meanwhile, a stretch fiber helps create a less restrictive, more comfy fit.
✔️ Length: As you may have gathered from our guide, there are a variety of inseam lengths to choose from, including short, medium and long options. "The most common inseam length for swim trunks is 7 inches, which hits above the knee, but 5-inch swim trunks that reach mid-thigh are a trendier style, perfect for lounging on the beach," explains Constantine. If you play water sports or prefer longer trunks, look for an inseam length of 9 or more inches.
✔️ Liner: We have included both lined and unlined men's swim trunks so you can find the perfect fit for your preferences. A liner, usually a mesh or netted material, can provide extra comfort and protection. "The lining prevents a wet swimsuit from clinging to your skin, which could lead to irritation, and it’s breathable," elaborates Constantine. However, some find the lining to be uncomfortable or restrictive, so Constantine recommends carefully reading the product's description before purchasing.
