In my 14 years of testing hair dryers at Good Housekeeping, I've learned they’re not all created equal: the best ones dry hair efficiently, tame frizz, and feel comfortable to use. As a chemist and director of GH’s Beauty Lab, hair dryers are by far my favorite category to test. In fact, I’ve tested more than 100 hair dryers over the years. For this update, we tested 15 models launched in the past two years, combining over 2,000 measurements in the Lab with feedback from 55 consumer testers with a range of hair types.
One thing that stood out to me in this roundup is that price made a difference: more expensive hair dryers outperformed cheaper ones, which isn’t always the case with beauty products. We’re also seeing hair dryers get more efficient, from automatic temperature regulation that prevents hair damage to compact models that don’t sacrifice performance. These six are the ones that we can most confidently recommend based on performance in the Beauty Lab and feedback from at-home users. In this article, we focused on full-size models. For compact, dual-voltage picks, see our guide to the best travel hair dryers.
Our top picks:
✔️ Best Overall: Sutra Beauty SAMRA Blow Dryer A well-rounded dryer that works quickly and helps tame frizz.
✔️ Best Value: InStyler Turbo Max Ionic Hair Dryer Despite only costing $100, it outperformed much pricier models.
✔️ Best for Curly Hair: Pattern Beauty The Blow Dryer Top-rated by curly hair testers for adding volume and curl-enhancing diffuser.
✔️ Best for Travel: BabylissPRO Nano Titanium™ Light Ionic High-Speed Dryer Dual voltage and travel-ready yet powerful enough for everyday use.
✔️ Most Versatile: Olivia Garden JetHP Hair Dryer A space-saver with the multifaceted attachment lineup.
✔️ Most Customizable T3 Aire IQ A Strong performer with smart settings and attachment recognition.
Pros
Top scores across the board for frizz, drying speed, and ease of use
Lightweight and comfortable to hold
Cons
Somewhat loud
Why we’re calling it best overall
The Samra dryer comes in a striking orange finish and includes a concentrator and mid-sized diffuser. Instead of a traditional cool-shot button, it has BioCycle mode, which alternates between warm and cool air to help limit heat exposure. You can also adjust the settings manually using the LED display on the side; the dryer starts on warm heat and low speed. Our analysts liked its elongated handle and magnetic attachments, which were easy to put on and remove. The magnetic air-inlet cap makes the filter easy to access for cleaning and maintenance. Its flexible cord wraps easily for storage and comes with an attached tie and hanging loop.
In Lab measurements, the Samra ranked at the top for air speed and among the highest for air volume, moving a large amount of air quickly. The output temperature was slightly lower than other dryers in the category, but it dried a wet swatch of medium-brown hair on par with our other picks. At-home testers ranked it highest for ease of use and performance, finding it easy to operate and comfortable to hold, even during extended use. It also earned the highest scores among full-size dryers for overall satisfaction and for leaving hair frizz-free. All testers said it helped them achieve their desired style and liked how their hair felt afterward. Testers with curly hair especially praised the diffuser for enhancing their natural curl pattern.

Tester notes: One tester with fine hair praised its smart features: “I love the alternating heat and cool air setting. The hair dryer is definitely kinder to my fine hair than my regular hair dryer.” Another tester said her hair felt “healthier” after two weeks of use. A tester with medium-length curly hair said she “especially loved the diffuser. It made my curls look and retain their natural shape.” One tester summed it up: “Overall, it is a great hair dryer.”

Pros
Fast and powerful
Lightweight and easy to grip
Selectable turbo and ionic settings
Cons
Loud
Why we’re calling it best budget
Priced under $100, the InStyler ionic dryer performed on par with its pricier contenders in our evaluation. We loved the customizable dial airflow control, which was easy to adjust while styling, and its lightweight design. It offers two airflow output settings: ionic, to turn the ion generator on, or turbo, to boost airflow power.
In our tests, the dryer produced strong airflow and fast drying times. It was comfortable to hold, with an easy grip and a well-balanced feel. The concentrator attachment snapped on and off easily, and the controls were intuitive to operate, even without looking. In our assessment, a conveniently sized, hard-to-miss cold shot button quickly toned down the heat. Tester feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many noting its balance of power and usability, but sound measurement indicated it was on the louder side.
Tester Notes: Two Beauty Lab experts commented that they “loved” this model. It is “lightweight but powerful, easy to hold and use," one reported. "Gives a great, strong airflow but not overpowering," another said.
| Wattage | 1,500 |
| Attachments | 1 |
| Number of Settings | 2 speed; customizable heat |

Pros
Highest air volume output
Perfect marks for customizable settings
Quiet and easy to maneuver
Includes a sturdy stand for storage and display
Cons
Controls can be easy to switch accidentally
One tester found the cord heavy
Why we’re calling it best customizable
Our scientists liked the large LED screen, which made the settings easy to read without squinting—a welcome change from the small displays on many hair dryers. It offers eight customizable heat and speed settings, three hair-type options (fine, medium, and coarse), and two volume-boost settings adjusted by using the plus and minus controls at the bottom of the screen.
Pressing the cool-shot button lets you adjust the heat setting; when the cool shot is turned off, the heat also turns off. We also liked that you can pause the dryer with the center button on the handle instead of turning it off. It slows down or stops when set down, which can be helpful when you’re switching brushes or applying product.
At its highest speed and temperature setting, the Aire IQ recorded the highest air-volume output in our latest roundup measurements, but it also moved the air very fast. Its results ranked alongside our top pick for drying hair. We weighed this dryer at 1.7 pounds with its cord. The cord, though a bit bulkier, rolled up easily for storage, but one tester found the cord heavy.
Testers gave the Aire IQ unanimous high marks for maneuverability and customizable settings, but some said the controls were easy to switch accidentally while holding the dryer. Testers also rated it highly for drying hair quickly and for its cool-air performance, including that one “didn't have to hold down the cool button.” They appreciated the automatic temperature adjustment, with one tester noting that it was “great when you are in a hurry.”
The Aire IQ comes with a sturdy, heavy stand that holds the dryer and two concentrators, or the dryer and diffuser. It can’t hold all of the attachments at once, so the setup seems designed to accommodate the attachments you use most for your hair needs. The stand is a thoughtful addition if you have room for it in your bathroom.

Tester notes: “What I like most is the customizable function. You can choose your hair type and temperature and speed on the digital display,” one marveled while another added, “It's not extra light, but it feels lighter than my old one and certainly fits better in the hand because of its sleek design, and it looks great.”
Pros
Praised for enhancing natural-looking curls and straightening waves
Includes four attachments designed for textured hair
Simple lock-in controls help prevent accidental setting changes
Cons
Testers wanted more guidance on using the brush and wide-tooth comb
Why is it ideal for curly hair
Designed for curls, coils, and tight textures, this dryer comes with four attachments: a diffuser, wide-tooth comb, brush, and concentrator nozzle. The Lab found the dryer’s nostalgic design, color, and straightforward features refreshing. It’s substantial in size but felt comfortable and lightweight in our assessment, weighing 1.7 pounds and featuring a thin cord.
Despite its old school look, our measurements showed that the dryer moved a high volume of air per unit of time—the second-highest in our test—at a moderate speed and lower temperature. That combination may help spread the airflow over a wider area, rather than concentrating it into the fast, forceful stream, which can be too aggressive on delicate hair.
We tested this dryer with people who had curly or wavy hair of varying lengths (one straight-haired tester was accidentally assigned the dryer, but luckily her curly-haired daughters tried it and reported positive results). Testers granted it perfect scores for its ease of use, except for customization and noise, where it ranked second overall. Some testers were less familiar with using a diffuser, but they reported that it created natural-looking curls and waves.
The click-on/off controls, along with a separate cool-shot button, helped prevent accidental setting changes during use in our assessment. The dryer attachments secure with a lock-and-release mechanism, so they can’t rotate like many newer models. Testers had more questions about using the other attachments, especially the brush and wide-tooth comb, and some wished the dryer came with more instructions; they also said they'll keep experimenting with them. Most of them found it very quiet.

Tester notes: Testers praised the dryer for both curl definition and frizz control. One tester with fine, medium-length curly hair said the diffuser helped her get more defined curls and volume: “When using the diffuse-only attachment, I achieved my desired style and noticed more defined curls. With my old diffuser, the curls were thicker and didn't have as much volume.”
A wavy-haired tester said the dryer helped tame frizz and made styling quicker: “I've tried everything to keep my hair from being frizzy; well, this hair dryer worked! It also dries really quickly. It doesn't take long to blow-dry like other hair dryers, and I don't have to use my hair straightener either! So less damage to my hair!”
Pros
Comfortable for extended use and includes most attachments
Lightweight and quiet
Includes two 1¼-inch ceramic-coated aluminum barrels and expandable diffuser
Dries hair fast
Received high satisfaction score
Cons
Could use a storage bag for its many attachments
Attachments get hot after use
Why is it the most versatile
The standout features of the Olivia Garden JetHP are its compact design and generous attachment set (the largest in our roundup). It includes six attachments: two concentrators, a comb attachment, a diffuser with a removable extension ring for different hair lengths and thicknesses, and two 1¼-inch ceramic-coated aluminum barrels for curling. In our view, it looked and functioned like a small, one-stop shop. Other features include a dual-filter system with reverse-airflow cleaning and an alert when the filter needs cleaning, which we found pretty neat.
Although its Lab airflow readings were more moderate, testers unanimously agreed it dried hair fast and let them create their desired hairstyle, giving it the highest scores for both. Despite its size, JetHP earned high marks for comfort, speed, and styling, and received the second-highest overall consumer score and satisfaction.
We liked that the two styling wands are metal-coated rather than plastic, helping conduct heat better to shape and set curls. They can get hot after styling, though, so handle them with the same care as a curling iron barrel. Our analysts also appreciated the lock button, which keeps controls from accidentally switching during styling. With its cord, it weighed 1.4 pounds.

Tester notes: A tester with thick, long hair said, “I have a TON of hair, and my hair can take quite a while to blow dry, so the fact that this blow dryer was very lightweight compared to my other blow dryer made the process so much better!” Testers also liked the attachments and their magnetic connection: “I love that there is a magnet to attach the products!” One tester especially praised the dryer’s quiet design: “I absolutely LOVE how quiet and user-friendly it is.” Some testers confirmed our observation that the attachments get hot after use, so they recommend letting them cool before removing them. One wished for an accompanying bag so they could store the attachments in one place.
Pros
Dual Voltage and powerful airflow
Top scores for fast drying and reducing frizz
Earned the top consumer performance score among travel dryers
Includes diffuser
Cons
Testers found it noisy, with a higher-pitched sound
Non-foldable
Why we’re calling it best for travel
The BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Light Ionic High-Speed Dryer is a compact, lightweight dryer with customizable heat and speed settings. We weighed this dryer at 1.2 pounds with the cord. Although its handle doesn’t fold, its compact size makes it easy to store or pack for travel. The snap-on attachments may take a firm pull to remove, but once we got used to the mechanism, we found them easier to handle.
In our airflow measurements, the dryer had the second-highest air speed and moderate air volume. This combination can help direct airflow for focused drying, and testers’ feedback supported its performance: they liked its drying speed, styling results, and frizz reduction. The dryer also recorded the highest nozzle temperature. The BaBylissPRO earned the highest consumer performance score among the travel dryers we tested. They gave top marks to its customizable heat and speed settings, drying speed, and strong, consistent airflow. The dryer also scored well for styling results, frizz reduction, how hair felt after use, and volume. Noise and handling the attachments were its weaker areas.

Tester notes: One tester with curly hair said the diffuser worked well and left hair looking glossy. Another found the dryer quick and easy to use, but had trouble removing the diffuser, especially while it was still hot. Overall, it got high marks for satisfaction and was praised for its uncompromising performance despite its size. One summed it up: “I love how lightweight it is; I never take a blow dryer on vacation because it is usually too heavy, and hotels never include diffusers. So this will be wonderful.”

How we test hair dryers

In our latest hair dryer test, the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab evaluated 15 models launched within the past two years and available nationwide, across a range of prices. In the Lab, we measured each dryer’s airflow, air speed, temperature, weight, and cord length. We also assessed ease of use, including how comfortable each dryer was to hold, how easy its controls were to operate and how readily its attachments could be changed.
Each dryer was also sent to up to four at-home testers, who rated its comfort, ease of use, styling performance and overall satisfaction in detailed surveys. After combining the Lab measurements and consumer feedback, we selected 10 top-performing models for additional drying-rate tests on standardized human hair swatches.
Across the 15 dryers and 10 finalists, we collected 1,860 temperature measurements, 360 airflow and air-speed readings, 1,155 tester ratings and 165 written comments. We used the results to identify the models that performed best in the Lab and in real-world use.
What to look for when shopping for a hair dryer

"The best hair dryers offer faster drying times, reduce frizz, and [promote] better hair health," says Cynthia Alvarez, a celebrity hairstylist in Los Angeles and New York. For optimal results, "you need maximum power with the best airflow, all in a lightweight design," adds Michelle Cleveland, owner of Hair Addict Salon in Toms River, New Jersey.
✔️ Wattage
- A hair dryer's wattage determines its power.
- 1,875 watts is the most common hair dryer wattage.
- The GH Beauty Lab recommends a range between 1,500 and 2,000 watts for best results on all hair types.
✔️ Attachments
Attachments can significantly improve different hair textures by altering the airflow. Diffusers and concentrators are the most common attachments and may be included with your dryer or sold separately.
- Diffusers are ideal for curly hair as they reduce frizz, define curls, and add volume by gently circulating air to the hair ends.
- Concentrators focus the hair dryer's airflow for smooth, sleek styles. Broad, extended nozzles dry thick, long hair faster, while short, narrow ones help tame curly or frizzy hair for a sleek blowout.
✔️ Heat & Speed Settings
- Adjustable settings let you customize the level of heat and power to suit your hair type and preferences.
- Our top-tested hair dryers all have a cool-shot button to close the cuticle, lock in the style, and prevent frizz after drying.
✔️ Weight & Design
- In testing, we take each model's weight into account, since a too-heavy hair dryer can affect ease of use.
- Our scientists also measure the length of its cord, since a longer hair dryer cord offers more flexibility.
- We assess the noise level, because a loud dryer can be uncomfortable to use, especially for extended periods.
✔️ Safety & Certification
- Check for safety verification emblems like ETL (Electrical Testing Laboratories), UL (Underwriters' Laboratories), or TUV or SUD (both part of the Technical Inspection Association) on the packaging.
- These certifications ensure the dryer was tested for safety and met requirements.
Is a ceramic or ionic hair dryer better?

Ionic technology offers visible benefits and is ideal for curly hair prone to frizz and flyaways, as it reduces static and leaves hair smoother. In testing, the effects are visible when you switch the ionized technology on and off: static builds up when you blast air without an ionizer, and with it, the hair aligns better and looks shinier.
On the other hand, many hair dryers advertise technologies like ceramic or far-infrared radiation, but our testing has found these aren't easily distinguishable. While research exists, there's little data on their specific benefits in hair dryer design.
What's the best hair dryer for my hair type?

When choosing the best hair dryer for your hair type, focus on finding one with customizable settings. Here are general guidelines for different hair types:
✔️ Curly hair (3a to 4c types): Opt for an ionic dryer with attachments. A diffuser is essential for embracing natural texture, and a narrow nozzle helps smooth the hair.
✔️ Thin hair: Look for a dryer with low heat settings to prevent damage. High heat is unnecessary unless specific styling requires it.
✔️ Thick or long hair: Choose a dryer with higher wattage for stronger airflow and heat.
✔️ Hair extensions: Standard hair dryers work well for both synthetic and real extensions, Cleveland notes.
What is the best way to blow dry hair?

Damage is always top of mind when it comes to hair dryers, and regardless of their technologies and price points, the safest choice depends on how you use them. Even the most advanced dryer can cause harm if the heat is too high, the tool is too close to your hair and scalp, or is applied for too long.
Generally, lower heat causes less damage, but since all hot tools can damage hair, it's essential to protect strands. "Always prep hair with a leave-in styling product that provides heat protection before blow-drying," to form a protective barrier against heat, Alvarez advises.
Here are celebrity hairstylist and Kerasilk Brand Ambassador Harry Josh's tips for a bouncy DIY blowout:
✔️ Apply product: Work your leave-in styling product through damp hair from roots to ends, then comb for even distribution.
✔️ Section and start: Divide hair into four parts and dry one at a time. Use the dryer's nozzle to focus airflow while lifting strands with your fingers for volume at the roots.
✔️ Use a brush: Wrap a 1-inch section around the brush and run the nozzle down the hair shaft as you pull the hair taut. Repeat until each section is fully dry.
