One of my favorite things about walking through my New York City neighborhood is discovering all the little book shares that have popped up recently. If you haven't spotted one before, they're essentially charming little wooden libraries where neighbors can leave a book and take another, letting others discover a new read—for free.

The ones I’ve seen originate from Little Free Library, a nonprofit organization that officially put these structures on the map (the honor-system drop-offs are located throughout the country and the globe). But if you’re in an area without one (you can check this map to find one near you), Joanna Gaines has a solution. Her Target collection, Hearth & Hand with Magnolia, includes an adorable Neighborhood Nook you could use as your own unofficial version.

From afar, it looks like an oversized nest box or birdhouse. Up close, you'll notice thoughtful details like the A-frame shingle roof, a swinging front door, and a soft sage-green finish. Inside, you’ll find two shelves where you can store shareable goodies for neighbors, like books, toys, art supplies, or pantry staples.

According to the brand, it’s made with HDF (high-density fiberboard) parts, and it includes a few tools needed for assembly and a stake to secure it into the ground. (When fully assembled with the stake, it measures nearly 7 feet tall and 16 inches wide).

Speaking of construction, it’s worth noting that some shoppers mentioned how the wood pieces aren’t sealed for weather. Make sure to seal, paint, and waterproof the material before use. Plus, the directions advise shoppers to check the roof every three to four months to help prevent rain damage and to reseal or repaint the base once per year.

It may not be an officially registered Little Free Library, but it offers a charming way to build a sense of community—one borrowed book at a time.
