If you’re a fan of the luxury shampoos sold under the Oribe brand name, check your shower.

One of the line’s products has been recalled due to possible bacterial contamination.

On July 1, Kao USA, the manufacturer of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo, detected Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria in specific lots of this product and issued a voluntary recall on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website.

Kao USA is conducting an ongoing investigation to confirm how wide the scope of the contamination may be.

Which product is being recalled?

Both the 8.5-ounce and 33.8-ounce sizes of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo are being recalled and could be affected. The shampoo was manufactured between February 21, 2026, and February 26, 2026, and sold throughout the United States and Canada.

What’s the worry about the bacteria?

Pluralibacter gergoviae is linked to respiratory diseases, urinary tract infections, eye infections, and even sepsis, but it’s important to note that it rarely causes illness in healthy people. However, if you’re immunocompromised, have a weakened immune system, or are undergoing a surgical procedure, this bacterium can indeed make you sick.

Kao USA stated in its recall notice that no matter what your health status is, you should stop using the shampoo immediately.

What to do if you already used the recalled product

If you experienced any symptoms or adverse events, you can report them to the Kao Professional Hair Technical Hotline at 800-333-2442 or email [email protected]. You can also use this contact info to request a replacement bottle or if you have more questions.

Of course, if you do feel ill and suspect it could be connected to using the shampoo, you should also contact your healthcare provider.

Also, make sure that the salon you go to, or your hairstylist, is aware of the recall and is not using the shampoo before your next appointment. Kao USA reports that it’s asking salons and retailers to return the shampoo so it can be disposed of, and the company is clearing its warehouses of the affected products, too.
