The in-between weather as we transition from season to season is honestly one of my favorite times to get dressed. Yes, it feels totally unpredictable; the morning may be 45 degrees and then creep up to 75 by the afternoon, but in my opinion, there’s nothing more exciting than the art of layering. I wait all summer long until I can break out my leopard chore coat again to add a little something extra to my outfit.

As an analyst in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab with a background in fashion, I’m always on the look out for wardrobe staples like transitional jackets. If you’re ready to brave the fluctuating temperatures but aren’t entirely sure what jacket to choose, some of my fall favorites this year include a cropped trench, a packable puffer, and a denim chore coat.

The cropped trench

A modern twist on a timeless piece, the cropped trench has a looser shape and a hemline that cuts off at the hip rather than the knees. The traditional tan color fits perfectly into a fall color palette. Some cropped trenches have a boxier look like this one from Levi’s, while others like our pick from Artizia have a belt for a cinched, silhouette-defining look.

The packable puffer

Packable puffers are a must-have for chilly weather. It may not be the most stylish piece in your wardrobe, but it’s practical and perfect for when you’re on the go. The lightweight jackets are stuffed with insulating down or synthetic fiberfill and can be easily folded down in a bag as backup. Some styles like this one from Uniqlo actually pack into a small pouch or their own pocket, making it easy to tote around.

The denim chore coat

This year, denim variations of the classic, utilitarian chore coat are popping up everywhere. The jackets have slouchier dropped shoulders for a roomy, lived-in look and lots of space to layer over a sweater. Wear your denim chore coat with some jeans in a different wash, a pair of trousers, or over a flowy dress to lean into the slouchy feel.
