The product analysts and cleaning experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab have been testing vacuum cleaners for decades. To find the best Bissell vacuums, we review each model in the Lab and observe how effectively it picks up dirt, whether it’s easy to maneuver around and how well it performs on various floor types. We also send consumer testers home with vacuum cleaners when possible to share feedback on their experience using them. Over the years, Bissell vacuums have consistently ranked as some of our favorites, standing out for their versatility, durability and ease of use.
Pros
- Brush roll and dust cup help eliminate pet hair messes
- 7-foot hose
- Brush roll can be turned off
Cons
- Cord doesn’t automatically rewind
No pet is too fluffy for the Pet Hair Eraser Turbo Plus. Whether you've got a perpetually shedding husky or a short-hair breed, this powerful, feature-packed upright vacuum for pet owners will help keep your floors fur-free.
This corded upright has a tangle-free brush roll and a hair spooling system in the dust cup that makes pet (and human) hair pickup a breeze — and the inevitable cleaning of the vacuum afterward. It comes with three attachments, and two are specifically for tackling more pet hair messes. The sealed filtration system keeps allergens trapped inside the vacuum, which means less sniffling and sneezing.
Our experts appreciate that the dust cup can be removed with the push of one button, and Febreze odor technology in the filter prevents pet odors from building in the device. The vacuum also automatically adjusts the height of the brush roll to go from carpets to bare floors and area rugs seamlessly.
It has thousands of reviews on Amazon, and when we tested it in our Lab, we found it lived up to the hype. We especially liked how easy the dust cup was to empty and the convenient LED-lit crevice tool that lets you find all that hidden dust.

Pros
- Great at edge cleaning
- Comfortable grip
- Features a wall caddy for storing tools
Cons
- Takes a few passes to get rid of pet hair
Well-loved by our experts for its powerful cleaning and budget-friendly price, this cordless stick vacuum was a top performer in our recent test of 21 stick vacuums.
While testing it in the Lab, we found that it offers many of the same attributes as some more expensive cordless stick vacs like a long run time, a variety of helpful attachments and variable suction levels. The tangle-free brush roll helps prevent hair from wrapping around it while cleaning, and the full-width suction means you'll have an easier time getting tight corners clean. We also appreciate that it includes a crevice and dusting brush tool so you can remove dirt from even the smallest spaces.
While heavier than some other stick vacuums, it still weighs in at less than 8 pounds so it isn't too difficult to maneuver around your house. Plus, if you need to take a breather or walk away from the vacuum for any reason, it features a unique parking brake that locks the brush roll and keeps it from sliding down the wall or falling to the ground when you step away.

Cons
- Filters are not washable
This robot vacuum and mop combo puts automated cleaning at your fingertips. Aside from switching out the tanks, you can just sit back and relax while it hustles around your room doing all the work for you. It's a great maintenance cleaner, first vacuuming hard floors and area rugs to remove surface dust, then scrubbing hard floors to get them clean and shiny.
In our tests, it cleaned hardwood and tile floors thoroughly by getting into tight corners and picking up pet hair and dry debris we didn’t even know was there.
The tanks need to be switched when going from vacuuming to wet mopping, but they are easy to remove and empty when your robot is done cleaning. The SpinWave’s microfiber mopping pads are machine-washable, and we found the brush roll easy to remove and clean. Plus, the mop pads spin as the robot travels across your floors, making sure that it is scrubbing and not just wiping them.

Cons
- Loud
Get in all those hard-to-reach places that probably haven't seen a good clean in longer than you'd like to admit with this handheld vacuum. It's an excellent option for smaller jobs like cars, upholstered furniture and pet beds.
The Pet Hair Eraser has a rotating brush attachment to pick up pet hair that seems to get everywhere, a cordless design for extra reach (and convenient storage) and a multi-level filtration system, all for an affordable price. This handheld vacuum’s super lightweight design makes it easy to maneuver around furniture and use on stairs.
We first tested a similar Pet Eraser model from Bissell several years ago and were impressed with its performance in cleaning dirt from bare floors. Its controls are simple to use and emptying the dust cup is easy too. Plus, its small size means you can stash it away in your closet or cupboard without taking up too much space. It's quick, efficient, versatile and budget-friendly. Just keep in mind that similar models have been rated as noisy in Lab tests.

How we test vacuum cleaners
The product analysts and cleaning pros in the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab have tested hundreds of vacuum cleaners, following an identical evaluation process across all models to ensure that every product is reviewed accurately.
Using a custom-built vacuum testing machine, dirt is embedded into a test carpet, then each vacuum is passed over the carpet an equal number of times. By comparing the weight of the empty dust cup before testing and the dust cup's weight after testing, our experts calculate how much dirt is picked up by each vacuum. We also test each vacuum cleaner's ability to pick up debris of different sizes and shapes like sand and dry pasta across hardwood, vinyl and tile flooring, along with how well they pick up faux pet hair from carpet and how well they clean along edges.
Special consideration is given to each vacuum cleaner's ease of use. These evaluations include testing maneuverability around tight corners and under low furniture, ease of switching cleaning modes, cleaning of the appliance, the weight and sound produced by a model and scoring each owner's manual for inclusion of all necessary information for use. Battery runtime, extra features and attachments are also evaluated and noted for each model as applicable.
